hope i'm not affecting bills thread here

but this is my progress on the lightning

i have cut the fuslage in half ready for lengthening

i havnt re-joined it yet obviously

but i have skimmed the tail end to re-profile the area around the engines i will make some new exhausts

etc as i get to it

the belly tank was removed and apropriate amount of plastic removed this was a fair bit as bill explained in his method

lightningfix001-1.jpg

lightningfix002-1.jpg

rivets by trumpeter have been filled and are being re applied using a tool for a much more subtle effect

i personally like a few rivets present on a large scale jet personal preference only these were filled with surfacer 500 and

sanded back ,i have also added some material to the nose and under the belly portion of the nose

lightningfix005-1.jpg

thanks for the inspiration Bill

this is the trumpeter 1/32 kit Bill

:) .

quick edit , i also removed and raised the spine by a few mil its quite odd but i expected a lot of trouble with canopy fit after that

but raising the cockpit sills seemed remedy that too

Ooops...all getting a bit confusing now!! I thought you were posting pic's of your 1/72nd Frightning here as a response to my couple of pic's of my still to be finished, if I ever do. 1/72nd Frightning :hypnotised:

Great work Bill, you don't seem a bit phased by the task! :thumbsup2:

David.

No, not at all - well not yet anyway. I've been tinkering away with various odds and ends and am ready to start painting and detailing the cockpit. I can then join the fuselage up and get on to the wings! They will be a challenge!!!

Amendment to fin part 1

IMG_2023.jpg

Cockpit tub part 1

IMG_2041.jpg

The nose gear is in the wrong place! Here I've moved the attachment pivot area forward

IMG_2051.jpg

Cockpit tub 2

IMG_2065.jpg

Cockpit tub part 3 - I'll be adding the seats and some more detail later on

IMG_2066.jpg

Milliput and lead foil for nose weight - hope its enough!

Fin amandment part 2

Tabs to help alignment...

IMG_2072.jpg

And progress at last - The fuselage halves have been nailed together...

Hi Bill,

Andy from the F3 build.....is the entire nose gear bay/radar tower set too far back as Trumpeter gives it to you? I noticed you moved yours forward. I was going to cut my intake trunk to set the nose gear bay down in the gear well opening as Trumpy gives it, but is it possible that the bad sit of the intake trunk also meant that the nose gear bay placement was thrown off with it?

Andy from the F3 build here (thanking my stars and garters that I don't have a ventral tank to rebuild!)..............

Don't forget you have some space in the radar cone, if you come up short.

Do you find that the fuselage is pretty rigid near the wing joins without reinforcement? I'm worried that the bendiness of Trumpeter's plastic will cause the wings to sag, so I'm planing bulkheads and spars for mine, unless you think it's going to be rigid enough.

Hi Andy, I think thats the reason for the gap between the intake ring and the intake trunking. They moved everything too far back to compensate for the increased length of the undercarriage legs.

In retrospect I think I should have moved the whole unit forward, and in doing so solving th ewhole problem. The upper vane could be easily trimmed back. Maybe when I do the F2!?

I'm hoping that you won't see much with the gear in and the doors on!

I'm not sure about the smaller tank - I think that if/when I build my F2, I'll remove the tank and replace it AFTER if extended the fuselage.

Yeah, the radar cone will take some weight - and I can always cram some more weight in the intake trunking itself - I can hide it behind the FOD

I had thought about adding an internal bulk-head due the amount of butchery....I am going to risk it, though I suspect a spar or two would help.

I hope its going to be rigid - but you are right - the plastic is very bendy- you've got me worried now!!! I may see about adding a spar of some sort now - especially If I add the overwing tanks.....

One of my aims in building this kit, was to use as little aftermarket items as possible, and to attempt to rely on good old-fashioned modelling techniques and use plastic card and filler - and any other bits of scrap I could use.

The only areas I would cheat on would be areas that would be beyond my modelling skills. So in addition to a crew access ladder - probably from Flightpath's set and decal's from Xtradecal - I decided that the kits wheels needed to be replaced.....

So I purchased a set from Matercaster's - and here they are....

From L to R Echelons, with Trumpeter below. The Mastercaster set features separate brake disks.

Also been busy sanding away at the Milliput this week....ready for some tidying up and a re-scribing session!

That's incredible work Bill, far above my skil level. One question, are you going to trim the rear door and use the offcut as a blanking piece to fill the hole created by moving the nose gear forward?

Tony :clif:

I had planned on using plastic card and milliput to fill the gap - until now!

Thanks for that one Tony, so, yes - what a good idea.....

:speak_cool:

Cheers

Yikes, that's a lot of contour work. I think I'll go with Airfix 1/48 for my F2A/F6! :hypnotised:

Meanwhile, another question from the F3 side: how would you compare the available boarding ladders? I see that Eduard does one, but you mention Flightpath's. I'd rather go with Eduard's mainly for ease of ordering, but if the Flightpath is vastly superior, I'll bite the bullet and get one.

BTW you should see the craziness inside the front end of my Lightning. I think I FINALLY have the radar tower/intake/nose gear bay problem sorted. I'll post pics in my thread once I finish it.

Hi Andy, The Flightpath ladder is included in a rather large and comprehensive set originally designed for the Echelon Lightning - its not available independently. I would get the Eduard ladder, and may still do so, but I thought it cheaper to use what I had.

The fin - rescribed and ready to install. Not too clear here is the leading edge intake, which I've reduced considerably.

IMG_2228.jpg

The rear cockpit fairng didn't fit at all - so I've chopped it in half - filler will follow!

IMG_2262.jpg

Missed on almost ALL Lightning kits are the cannon trough muzzle guards. These apparently broke up shock waves from the cannons.

I've added these from heat stretched sprue inserted into pre-drilled holes. The cross section of these should be square! Ah well!

I've also drilled out the holes in the cannon bulge...

Sheesh! thats some superb work there Bill, Just a shame it needs doing at all really.

Cue aftermarket resin corrections. somebody? anybody???

I doubt much will be produced; I think the word is getting out about how much of pig this model is, especially for the asking price!

That said, if Sprue Bros. drops the price further on their F1A/F3 kits from US$87.99, I might consider getting one, now that I'm figuring out how to deal with the many issues. I suspect they will have F2A/F6s at the $87.99 price in due course.

Flightpath are supposed to be producing a new set to fit this kit, including rudder pedals. I'm not sure how far along it's got. Also, I've just checked the Eduard site, ther are internal and external sets for this kit plus seatbelts. Hannants have all sets in stock.

Some Months off yet - so if you are desperate - go for Eduard. Full spec. of our sets will be announced in due course - no more details yet - but these sets will not just relate to the aircraft but to ground support equipment/Lightning display items also.

David Parkins,

I reviewed the interior zoom set and exterior set on Modeling Madness:

Interior: http://www.modelingmadness.com/others/deta...s/abed33031.htm

Exterior: http://www.modelingmadness.com/others/deta...s/abed32227.htm

Shorter version: the exterior set is very useful, the interior set, not so much.
