You wanted Sea Fury builds?

Recommended Posts

The Sea Fury is my all time favorite aircraft and I've long wanted a kit I could actually finish and be happy with. I built a PM kit when it was released and even as a younger modeler I was less then impressed with it. The High Planes kit looked difficult and for some reason the Special Hobby never made it to the bench. However, I was excited by the Trumpeter release. Could this be the Sea Fury of my dreams? I got the kit on Thursday and set aside some time on Saturday to get a start. I got the cockpit and tub painted up Testors Acryl RLM66. Even got a little drybrushing in. Painted the panel Testors Acryl Interior Black. Didn’t get any drybrushing on it yet. Sadly Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday have seen no time for modeling. Maybe I'll get back to it later in the week. I hope.

The Trumpter kit is nice, but I expected better for the price. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I would say the Academy Typhoon is a better kit then the Trumpeter Sea Fury at half the price. Sadly the Academy Typhoon is a Typhoon and not a Sea Fury.

My plan is to do a RCN aircraft using decals from Belcher Bits. I eagerly await the RCN decals by Mike Grant, but those will be for my next Sea Fury.

I apologize for both my modeling and photographic skills. Neither are up to the standards of others here.

Jim

P.S.: Wish I was a millionaire because the Aki kit looks like the Sea Fury kit of my dreams...

I, too have been waiting for a decent Fury.

I've also got the SH one and the HC 48th kit. I keep looking at the 32 Fisher Fury.....mmmmm (but cash is a bit limited with one thing and another at the mo).

So, I'm quite interested to see how this goes together.

What's the surface detail like?. Has the Trumpeter rivet-man been working overtime again?. :hmmm:

Test fitting shows it to be excellent...and the surface detailing is perfect (for me) - meaning a lack of rivets and fine engraving.

A much, much easier assembly than the Special Hobby kit you have. Wings are beautiful with a folding option.

I've got a Special Hobby one on the bench at the moment plus one that's about to be decalled (albeit as an RAF Fury II....). The only real snag with building it is the resin insert for the wheel wells and that's just a shade too deep but some judicious sanding soon takes care of that - it's nowhere near as deep or badly fitting as the similar insert for their Tempest II. The rest is fairly easy.

Would that the High Planes one was so easy to build. The wings required multiple sanding to get them to fit, as did the fuselage. The canopy is nice though and the wings have the holes for the rocket attachment points that the Special Hobby one lacks. I've got it together but hate the sight of it.

The PM kit is fine if you want a cheap build or a basis for some what ifs.

Yea the exterior surface detail is very very nice. As stated above no rivets and very crisp fine lines. I wouldn't describe the fit as excellent. I'd say good to ok. Some filler will be required. I hope to have another update by the end of the weekend with the whole thing in one piece.

Just about to put the decals on my one. The build is ok but I found the cowling to be to small. I had to put a plastic shim in between the two parts other wise you get a bad step when you match it up to the fuslage. the wing fit is crap which is why im building it with the wings folded. I would say it is worth the 10 quid.

Should have some pics soon.

Cheers,

Neil
