spike7451
Well,I'm really pished off with it! A 'modded' 1/48 Italeria Tornado GR1 to GR4 in 31 Sqn 90th markings swapped with F32. OOB apart from new seats from Graham @Relish Models. OK,so the cockpit & airframe went together ok,no drama's.Opened up the EPU Exhaust, scratchbuilt the fairings on the pylons, replaced the AIM-9 LAU's with better ones robbed from my Revell Harrier,Added coamings & extra bits to the pit &,finally opened up & slanted the rear of the BOZ pod. Happy so far! Then came the painting!..... I could'nt get the correct gray's in ANY of the three model shops over here so I aproximated, after all,the weathering would darken it slightly anyway.... So after prepping the surface,I painted the main gray.DISASTER! The paint shown up large brush marks when it was drying! so I tried to strip it off to mixed results! Finally, after much work, sanding, rescribing, sanding, repainting,I had a smoothish surface I could apply the decals to. So I applied the MA decals & was'nt impressed! They are too opaque!you need a white basecoat, something not mentioned in the instructions, and some of them fractured on soaking. So I have a 3/4 done GR4 ready for the bin!!!I'm looking at it now & feel like taking a mallet to the f*****g thing!!! Sorry for the rant, Merv. Can't you just put it away for a few weeks ,and do the decent thing- ie get some Xtradecals- I have heard a lot of bad about MA since coming here. I for one would like to see a serious Tornado- and I don't really care which markings it's wearing as long as the finished product looks good
Mark M
STEP AWAY FROM THE MALLET!!! ok now breeth, and again ok what do you need to repaint and decal it, im sure between us all here we can help
AnonymousFO98
Deep breaths Merv know how you feel for sure! put it away and forget it for a while tackle it later- the beast will be tamed- and i don't mean with a mallet! only a few days to the Gulf War GB you can't go AWOL mate my inspiration at times like this is to think of Madman's Stringbag dio! man what he went through with a build infinitely better than i can ever hope to achieve- it would have destroyed me but he kept bouncing back with amazing stoicism Edited July 30, 2009 by walrus
Antoine
Just leave this kit alone for a while, and have a try with something very simple, to be build out of the box, with no aftermarket at all. And then go back to the tournedos latter, when you feel like it. I've been there lattely, with a D-520 in German marking. I've messed up the decals, too. And while I'm looking for a spare camo option (Another German machine), I'm having fun with something else, lattely an I-16, and then a PR spit. AnonymousDFB1
Can only echo what has been said Merv. Disasters I put the model down and walk away. Just now in flat coating my F-16 I have found a seam I totally forgot to sand Since sitting here looking at the posts I've worked out a way I can disguise it with a bit of paintwork. It's 'rescueable' Merv just come back to it
bexwh773
Merv Ol' Bean, Dont go by way of the hammer and no going AWOL either (you should know better ) Now then, deep breaths, happy thoughts, put to one side and do a bit more preperation & planning I look forwards to seeing it finished my friend Bexy
spike7451
Cheers peeps, I have a F-117 for the GB which'll be a no brainer.Just after all that work! I used Humbrol/Revell acrylics first & that's what caused the problem.I've used Tamiya in the past with ho problems brushing. In face the Gulf Tornado came out excellent! So my tip is dont use Humbrol or Revell! Merv Edited July 30, 2009 by spike7451
AnonymousFO98
That's odd Merv have started using the Humbrol acrlycs this year and apart from some silver that did go weird and messy on my starfighter they have been impressive. Then again the biggest i have tried them on is a 1/72 Gannet- slightly smaller than a 1/48 Tonka It may be that using a new medium for the first time, you haven't thinned it down enough? Tamiya acrylics are completely different in their handling properties.
tornado64
dunno what it is with m.a decals they are either great or awful .. i had the 56 sqd 2000 display aircraft sheet for the f3 tornado an awful set very very opaque so much so you had a set of white backing decals to go with them the thing is all other decals i have ever used have been one application decals so why can't m.a manage it .. Pascal
Hi Merv, What do you mean with the decals are to opaque ? Are the colors not bright enough ? If they are to light, maybe you can darken them with smoke ? Never ever put a model in the bin or destroy it, there's always a solution. Greetings Pascal

Greetings Pascal The black& grey colour scheme of the aorframe 'bleeds' thru the decals & on the black fin,I have a silvering between the decal & the recessed panel lines, even useing solvaset. The yellow of the spine flash is the worst. CockneyCol
Hi Merv, Sure we've all been there, This week I was writing up a review for a magazine, looking at the instructions to list the colour options and I realised I'd painted the kit the totally wrong colour, silver instead of white! decals, weathered an' everything, no biggie, I'm just going to have to sand and paint the decals out and find an airframe that did fly in silver instead. To quote one of those "wonderful" management training courses "It's not a problem but a chance to find a solution". I always work on the basis that whilst its a total pain when things go wrong, its a hobby so no-one is gonna die if it all goes "pete tong". goon
Bad luck Merv. I'm having some trials with a Rafale at the moment. Since restarting the modelling game in the new year I've found it to be very effective mitigating some problems I have with stress and anxiety. (I know S&A sounds like one of those things people spout on about but means nothing, and I thought about it the same way until I was laid low and off work for two months a couple of years ago, when I understood it was very real and making me very ill.) Now I try to never lose sight of the fact I'm doing it for relaxation, and if I get cross or wound up, I walk away and think the problem through, sleep on it, or just leave modelling for a week or so. Or just break open another box and start assembling the basics like drop tanks and weapons, cutting a few parts off the sprue and taping together. Stow it, do something else, come back to it later. Good luck!
Mentalguru
Back in your nice padded room Neil You know Mish- when I was ooop Norf I went up in the loft and found a nice shiny new Promodeller B-25 (sittign amongst the other B-25's) and thought- "Neil would really like this" then I thought- poor little B-25 model, while mysteriously humming "'ammer 'ammer 'ammer bin bin bin," (a la Torchwood) and the fact that I hate Arsenal, and thought f*** it

xffw45343tg
Spike, when it all goes pear shaped, just stick the thing on a shelf and ignore it for a few months. Life's too short to be demoralised by plastic. What you have there is a fin that needs repainting, later.

Sometimes easier said than done i know OLiver Not possible as it's all the decals from the MA sheet.I'm considering dropping them a line of complaint, even if the was'nt a problem with the initial painting, the poor quality of the decals would've ruined the model anyway. The star on the other side of the fin fractured as did the gold lettering.
