Jazzy Jase
This is the new Airfix BF109 G-6, which I picked up at RIAT last weekend. I built it in a week, which is very quick for me. I was able to do this because the cockpit only contained a seat and the rest of the model was pretty simple. Surface detail is limited, but I found it a fun build, which went together very well. I won't comment on accuracy here, but there's a thread here discussing it. This was my first attempt at mottling, and I'm quite happy with the results. I've tried to follow the Humbrol instructions for paints, but using Tamiya equivalents and I'm not sure they are all that accurate. They look a little dark to me. The Airfix decals were out of register. Nick Millman sent me a slightly better set and I've stupidly put the fuselage Balkenkreuz on the wings and vice-versa. Please let me know what you all think. EDIT: I forgot to say that next time I will free-hand the camo on the top of the fuselage as I feel the demarcation is too hard. thx6667
Excellent paintwork, better than my first attempt at mottling! Bracknell eh? Use to live in Wokingham!
Guest Amazing Badger
Mega build mate, ace work on the mottling. Question though, How do you mask off the prop and spinner to paint the nose panels? I have to do it on my FW190, just wondering how it's done as you obviously know how!!

I have to do it on my FW190, just wondering how it's done as you obviously know how!! Thanks Amazing Badger, The prop and spinner wer painted separately and then glued into place. The yellow panel on the nose was painted and then masked off before painting the rest of the body. I know it was a shame to glue the prop on, but unlike the Tamiya kits, Airfix don't allow you to leave the prop off until the end.
Bazza
Nice try, despite the problems mentioned elsewhere..... Prop looks a bit BIG !! (camera angle??) i think you got the Decals SPOT ON !! They're not wrong,so fret not,Jase. Mind you...the Underside RLM 76 Hellblau, looks much TOO Dark.... Which Tamiya colour DID you use ?? Otherwise a good build, everything else if,anything is FINE !! Cheers,Bazza.

Which Tamiya colour DID you use ?? there are good pics of Brändle's G-6 in Prien's JG 3 history or Gerhard Bracke's 'Gegen vielfache Ubermacht' I think the scheme is spot on, shame the kit is so indifferent.. I'm going to build the Fine Molds 109 soon for comparison. I mixed RLM76 as XF2:7 + XF23:1 + XF66:2, which was from a reference I got off the net somewhere. It did seem quite dark, and then darkened further after applying Klear and Matt Varnish. there are good pics of Brändle's G-6 in Prien's JG 3 history or Gerhard Bracke's 'Gegen vielfache Ubermacht'I think the scheme is spot on, shame the kit is so indifferent.. Are these books you are referring to? Edited July 27, 2009 by Jazzy Jase

darson
Cool job on your first mottle Jase, it's way better than my first go. Next time you give a go though, lower the air pressure in your compressor and thin your paint out some more and you will avoid the little splatter over spray from the mottling.
