Revell 1/32 Starfighter

I have inherited a set of really nice decals for an Italian F104 but don't have a model to attach to them. I see that both Hasegawa and Revell make one. Can anyone say which is best or is the Revell a re-box of the Hasegawa offering or a pretty old kit thats not worth it?

thanks for any info in advance

The Revell kit is their own mold (not a Hasegawa mold) and while not a total waste, it just isn't quite up to the standards of the Hasegawa kit. You'll find nice cockpit and overall detailing on the Hasegawa kit, IMHO.

Glad someone pinned that down - I was having the devil of a time finding information.

A thought: are your decals for an F-104G or an F-104S? I ask because the S had additional features like extra ventral fins, plus slightly wider intakes, so if you're after real authenticity you may be into conversion territory.

Thanks for the info guys - its much appreciated. The decals say its for the "Last Starfighter" scheme - an F104 S ASA (whatever ASA stands for!) with the tiger painted so its "Bursting" out of the side of the aircraft. I guess the Hasegawa offering which says the model is the G/S version would be the best to start from.

Looks like I'd better bone up on the S version for starters !

I also have 1/32 decals from Belcher which can do the CF 104 in those crazy all black and yellow tiger meet markings and thought the two together might make a nice pair. I saw the topic on the bang seats being different on Canadian a/c - at least for a while.

I'd better look out some F104 references and aftermarket stuff. I have seen some resin tail pipes but can't see any cockpit resin in 1/32

I have the small "In Action" book but not sure how far that will take me. Any must have references that anyone know about?

Again all help gratefully received and will be used !

Aires 2077 for the tailpipe,

True Details 32454 for cockpit (Ex KMC) Or Black Box one if you acn find it. Both will need a new ejector seat though as they only includes US one, cant recall where I got mine it, was a few years ago now I'll check up and see if I can find out.

If you can get the Hasegawa F-104s World Starfighter version as that includes the correct bulged wheel doors and bigger wheels but is still missing the additional fuselage stabilizer fins, the cannon fairing, wing pylons, larger intakes and correct ejection seat

Unfortunately none of Hasegawa's F-104S kits is truly an S. They may add some of the details but they miss out the bigger intakes. If you can live with that as a smallish difference (personally, I probably could) and if you can find a boxing that definitely includes more than just Italian decals, you're probably OK.

ASA stands for Aggiornamento Sistemi d'Arma (weapons system update) - it's mainly internal differences that upgraded the radar and allowed the Starfighter to carry the Aspide and AIM-9L.

Thanks Guys

much appreciated

Have placed an order on net for the Hasegawa one and also found courtesy of Google a True Details set in the US going for $11 so have used the card for it.

I'll order the Aires tailpipe too which Hannants have in stock and looks very nice.

It never ceases to amaze me the breadth of knowledge that you guys have on Britmodeller and how willing you are to share it

Thanks all

Always liked the look of the F104 but it beats me how it ever flew with those wings - er winglets, microwings, wingettes? whatever. And the sound of that engine howl when it was in circuit was pretty unique too

Have a good weekend guys

John
