Italeri B-25 Mitchell ,48th scale

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Halfway throught this at the moment. its the Italeri boxing of the Accurate Minitures B-25..

What a pile of poo... fit issues all over the build, had to get the Pavla resin nose as the kit one was so warped... worst part so far has been the engine nacells... I would put it between a bad fitting Hasegawa kit and a Classic Airframes one..

Going for a gun nose 25 from the 500th BS. Tondalayo..

Not much to show so far....

Cheers,

Neil

Neil-

These are possibly the most esoteric modelling subjects of the Pacific War- I have loads of stuff on the B-25, and some replacement nacelles for the kit spare if you want them- LOADS of decals too

And yes- fit is atrocious

Hi Neil, I too am currently at a similar stage to you on this, doing the Raf version. Fit of engine nacelles not great to, luckily the nose section on mine was okay, good detail though. I have stalled on my build at the mo as can't seem to face it at the moment. May be try soon. You seem to have yours under control. Good work so far.

All the best

Chris

Funny

I built the Accurate Mins version back when it first came out and had zero issues with the fit. I replaced my cowls with Cutting Edge if I recall.

Looks great so far though Neil. B-25s are my fave medium bomber ever!!

Can't wait to see it finished.

Cheers

Mike

Excellent choice of markings there. :thumbsup2:

I'm planning to do Tondelayo as well, as one of a series of Air Apache B-25s.

Not sure how much you know about her, but on 18 Oct 1943, Tondelayo was involved in a strike against shipping targets anchored nr Rabaul.

Her right engine was knocked out by ground fire on the way to target, but the crew pressed ahead with the attack.

Unfortunately, the Japanese had spotted the approaching aircraft, thirty minutes out. By the time the strikes began, there were over a hundred Zeros in the air, waiting for them (and the B-25s had no fighter escort).

Coming off the target, Tondelayo (flying at around thirty feet off the water) was envolved in a 75 minute running battle, subjected to repeated diving attacks from the defending Zekes.

Her top turret gunner was credited with shooting down five enemy aircraft. Tondelayos cew were also credited with the destruction of four more Japanese fighters which had misjudged their attacks and had ended up slamming into the sea.

Upon landing, the crew counted forty one holes in her. She was out of action for seven months while undergoing repairs, which would include replacing the right wing, both engines and the left prop.

The crewmen of all three aircraft in Tondelayos flight, all recieved the Silver Star for valor.

This info comes from the book "Warpath across the Pacific" by Lawrence J Hickey, which I can't recomend highly enough.

Needless to say, I will be watching this one with great interest. B)

Now, where did I leave me popcorn?.

Must agree regarding "Warpath", superb piece of work, as is the second title in the Pacific War series "Revenge of the Red Raiders", my copy of the third part "Roarin' 20's" is hopefully winging it's way across the Atlantic at this time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys,

up to this now on the B-25.. not much to show for a weeks work... main basic colours are finished.. Bloody extracolour not totally dried, still a bit tacky.. going to have to give it a coat of Clear..

Started on the engines tonight, not finished yet... cut off the molded on ignition harness and replaced with copper wire.. just stuck them on the airframe with blue tack for the pics..

Cheers,

Neil
