From the article you link to:

"Deliveries of the first A400M were scheduled for the end of 2009 but that has been pushed back to 2013 at the earliest due to delays in building the engines and there had been fears that Britain would drop out of the project." (my bold)

As the engines are not built or designed by Airbus (they are a "Europrop International" product, manufactured by a consortium of the usual suspects in the European aero engine business) it seems a little unfair to blame them for the apparent failings of a supplier.

funny, back when we had a thriving aircraft industry, and didnt need 'european co-operation' we didnt seem to have these problems...

thats just my 2 euro's..sorry, PENCE worth, and not intended as a snipe to anyone reading this.
