OzH
Hi all, just finished painting the beast. I pre-shaded black over the Halfords Grey primer, so not to created to much drastic contrast. I followed Hasegawa's instructions mixing of 70% Olive Drab and 30% Black, they call out for Mr Colour, I used Tamiya acrylics, who's OD, I think, is a touch lighter, so hopefully looks just a touch faded and should make it easier when it comes to a wash later. Anyway pictures, let me know what you think? Not forgetting the all important CVR7

gary1701
That's looking really good Aubrey. I look forward to seeing lots of pics of it when done. Have you picked out any specific airframe which it will be or is that still to be decided? The colours are a real difficult job to judge, espically now many have been out and back from the desert. I kinda think there's two standards of finish to these - aircraft that have been to the desert - not just Afghanistan but also aircraft that have been in Arizona as well - and those that haven't. The aircraft that haven't gone out yet (and they only draw the Afghan aircraft from the same 30 odd airframes) do look pretty much like the pre-weathered finish you've got to at the moment, where as aircraft that have been out are a lot lighter, very dusty looking and worn with new panels fitted during overhaul easily visible. If you can catch one of these in the late 'golden hour' shortly before dusk that olive drab looks lovely, espically if it's one that hasn't gained the worn look. Don't know if these are any help colour wise but they're bang upto date: 'Army Air 342', (ZJ232) on the circuit late yesterday afternoon. OzH
Gary, Thank you again for a very valued opinion and excellent (you don't get much more current) photo's to back it up with! I've been studying these for a few moments and notice different shades on some panels on the tail, the pilot’s doors and just below the cockpit, and you say this one hasn't been deployed. Even though the majority of the helicopter is in good condition, the CVR7's look a bit messy! GregB, kindly, sent me hi-res copies of some pictures of Apache's in Afghanistan well and truly weathered, I will be going for that look, so lookout for loads of dust and some fading, I have to say this darker OD doesn't seem to fade to the extreme that most paint finishes do. jussie202
Very nice Ozh, I've virtually completed my WAH 64 and will post the results soon but it doesn't look as nice as your work. Those CRV's look amazing Justin

OzH
You know when things don't go to plan!!! I spent the last couple of modelling sessions decaling my Apache, things went OK. I then gave it a Satin coat, using Games Workshops Purity Seal Spray, used it for ages and have never had a problem. Well this time.... The base coat seems to have darkened to the extent that you can hardly see the black decals, now I know on the real thing they are low viz, but this may be a little toooo low! There are 16 decals in this picture!! And I seem to have some light grey/white residue as well. I'm hoping to "cover" the residue up with some weathering, but not sure what to do about the low viz decals? Any advice would be welcome! Still, I did have some success, some of the "fiddly bits" have come out OK And I'm particularly pleased with the Fire Control Radar dome
Greg B
Oz, I think this has been covered before either on here, ARC or HS. The solution was to give it a couple of coats of Klear, then use another Matt! Hope that helps mate. Greg
Mark M
i had the same thing happen on my lancaster, i used the humbrol satin out of a spray can, i think it reacts with Klear, it only did it in the 'Kleared' area, dont know what to surgest i treid re-Klearing and it didnt work for me, i ended up giving the lancaster to my son to play with otherwise she looks fab! those cvr7 are spot on! but i also had a thought about them, are they the same ones used by harriers? if so you really need to sell them singal as there's a whole new market out there, me for one! good luck keep us posted
OzH
Well I'm calling this one finished. Not 100% happy with how the colour turned out, a little to dark. Loads more photo's here... Edited November 7, 2009 by OzH

gary1701
Hi Aubrey, That looks fine from here. I would not want to guess as to whenever that's too dark or not, as depending on the light it varies far too much - usually completely black when I'm pointing the camera at one! Can't see from the pictures - what airframe did you do? Gary
