WAH-64D, updateing Hasegawa's 1/48 kit

Recommended Posts

I was looking at some pictures of the British Army Air Corps Apache Longbows and decided that I wanted to make one in 1/48 but wasn't sure about the differences from the US vesion.

As there was no update kit available I decided to make one, I have to give a big thanks to all those who have chipped in information as to what need's changing, with a special thanks to Gary Stedman for supplying loads of photo's and some great discriptions on what the various lumps an bumps are.

The parts are all done and should be available sometime in September this year via Heritage Aviation, who is now using a Checkoslovakian company to do the casting.

I've now started building the Hasegawa kit that the update will go on along with the Eduard etch and Masks.

Here's some of what you get in the box:

First update, cockpit completed with the help of Eduard's pre-painted set and some scratch building.

I had to add the air-con tubes, IR pickups behind the rear seat and the UK spec Short SA80 holders on the seats.

Cracking work OzH - you fancy making some more CRV's :P

Paul

Thanks for the compliment, the CRV's, along with a full set of British defensive stuff, are with Ian at Heritage Aviation at the moment, should be on the market in the next couple of months

Absolutely brilliant work OzH! As someone who is quite familiar with the UK apache that cockpit is easily the best representation I have seen.

I will definitely be getting at least two of the update sets when they appear, the RPD on the M261 launcher looks very good. Can you say if the set includes the CTS telemetry blade antenna for the lower aft tail boom?

One comment, if I may- you have what appears to be a standby compass (E2B) and another unit which I cannot identify on the CPG forward coaming- these do not appear on the UK aircraft in this position. (The Standby compass is on the pilots coaming, I don't think the other unit appears on UK birds at all.)

The reason I mention this is to enable you to rectify this if you wish, and that these items may foul on the cpg windscreen when you get to that stage in the build.

I can send you a few pics if you wish of the areas in question, although I am sure that Gary has sorted you out.

Looking forward to the rest of the build, and well done for grasping the nettle of the British updates for your model.

regards,

Troffa

Nice work on this so far - I just finished the JASDF boxing. You get a LOT of kit in the box, so you might be a while yet (wait till you get to the 29 piece main rotor  )

  • 2 weeks later...

Not been doing a whole lot of modelling recently, managed to correct a few errors and get the tub in though.

Next step will be to get the canopy on...

Looking good OzH, looking forward to seeing your colour mix, plus you've reminded me I need to add the little sensors above the engine intakes.

Are you planning on pre shading? Oh and are you going to, or have you tackled the grey seals that appear around the side windows?

David.

Thanks guys

David, I will pre-shade, but, I built this to display the bits for the intructions of the up and coming update kit (another plug!) so this is about all I can do on the main airframe.

I'm getting on with the hellfire's, rotor blades etc so will experiment with colours on them, see how they look.

As for the grey masks, invest in the Eduard paint mask set from Hannants:

Instruction sheet 1 and sheet 2

This gives you the first layer mask, you paint white (grey) then the second set go over the top, about 1mm larger, you then spray the main body colour, remove both sets and you have a white rim (so to speak!).

What you can see on mine it the top set of masks, the others are under.

Already have my friend, after my nightmare with the self lifting express on masks I decided to fork out, again!, for the newer type.

Just finshed putting them on two minutes ago, much better!

Hey plug away, I'm just pleased someone decided to tackle the CRV7 pod's because my model would look somewhat naked & incomplete without them.

Just had word that the parts have been returned from CMK and that they look GOOD!

I should have a set by tomorrow, I'll get them installed and get some pictures published ASAP

I'll also be takeing them to Yeovilton on Saturday, so if you're going, take a look.

These are just what I'm looking for!

Although I've got the Revell kit.

When (and where) will these be available to purchase by mail order (well internet order) as I'm in New Zealand?
