I've long had the idea in my head that Spitfires with the original wing (eg I, II, V, IX, XVI) had a wingroot walkway marked only on the port side (on the starboard side the "walk forward" line along the main spar just extends right in as far as the wing root) whereas those with the redesigned wing (eg VII, VIII, X!V, XVIII) had walkways marked on both sides.
