Decal setting solution?

Guys i went out to buy my usual Model Masters decal solvent solution and found the Humbrol Decal Cote 1 & Humbrol Decal Cote 2. i bought it instead of the MM.

Any one used them yet? any news? are they to strong or weak? Is it a SETTING solution? or just a COTE? does it soften the decal and make it conform nicely?

Before i always used M.M solutions, which comes in just one tub-...unlike this humbrol & micro-sol & set. Its good. not too strong and works very well with thin decals for anyone who is unsure about MM.

I must try this new Humbrol out and understand how and when to use the first tub and second :S

I hope this topic isnt in another forum already, well i didnt find it so.....

I haven't seen the 2-part Decal Cote in years, when it came in the little cube bottles. It actually worked quite well and I still have some. It works as a wetting agent and solvent, and I would say it's milder than some of the more acidic potions.

I don't have any experience of the newer Humbrol product, which is a 1-part system, sorry.

IT IS in two little cube bottles! one is yellow labelled and other is orange. So in other words these 2 cotes must be REALLY OLD! they look old anyway... hope the still work :undecided:

It is not the newer humbrol product...

i tried these setting solutions. they seem crap. no reaction what so ever. didnt seem to soften them, just wet them. i still got some silvering. transfer film still shows.

Do you put the cote 2 when it is dry from the cote 1? or when it is still wet? do you blot it when it is wet or dry?

I haven't seen Decal Cote 1 & 2 for years!

If my memory serves me correctly Decal Cote 1 is a setter, used to fix the decal in place (i.e. like Micro Set, or Mr Setter) and Decal Cote 2 is a solvent to soften the decals and make them settle down over the detail (i.e. Micro Sol, Mr Softener).

I also remember that they were pretty much useless, not working on virtually any of the decals I tried them on.

I used them years ago when they first came out. I found them unuseable. They left a white residue around the decals. I put them straight in the bin. The only thing I use for decalling is Klear/Future floor polish.

I agree with you both! they are u.s.e.l.e.s.s! i use MM solvent solution. after the decal is down and dry... i spread some decal cote 2... just in case, to make some use of it and who knows, when im fast asleep, its 'magic qualities' might, who knows, rub off onto the decal *cough*

The Humbrol Decalcotes were complete and utter pants. I think they were very heavily diluted, hence they had very little effect.

If you can get hold of them, try Micro Set and Micro Sol. I have found them to be much better, and work on most decals. One interesting thing I read on here is that Micro Set is actually acetic acid - i.e. white vinegar.

The next step up would be Gunze Sangyo Mr Mark Setter and Mr Mark Softer. The Softer is a bit stronger than the Micro Sol and will work on thicker decals. It's quite hard to get hold of though, the best place to get it is direct from a Hong Kong seller on Ebay.

The strongest decal solution is Solvaset, which will beat just about any decal into submission. The only problem is it's so strong you have to apply it very sparingly otherwise it will literally dissolve the decal. and make a real mess of it.

Another alternative I have seen mentioned is polystyrene cement. I've heard it will work on any decal, but I'm too afraid to try it because the potential to make a mess of both the decal and paint job are too great.

The final option is Klear - I tried it as a decal setting solution many years ago after reading about it in a magazine and sure enough it does work on just about every type of decal, but it won't make them conform to really complex compound curves or lumps and bumps. I used to use Klear on the really horrible decals from older Revell kits - you know the ones that had a huge carrier film and were terrible for silvering.

There are also others,,

Daco who have mild, medium and strong setting solutions that a lot of people use.

And there are specialist products like Tameo's SOF 1 & 2. Tameo make car kits, so these are meant for their products, but people use them as general solutions.

Sol 1 is a little more agressive than sold & set, Sol2 instantly turns a decal to jelly. Great for putting waterslide tyre decal on rubber tyres.

Sorry to just randomly pop up, but I've never used decal setter and softener (relative newbie). Where could I pick up some of this? And does anyone have advice on how to use it?
