Airfix 1/72 Spitfire mk 1

Dug one of these out the stash (been there for about 10 years probably!), and was interested to note that there has been a change to the mould since I last bought/built one - the wingtip navigation light 'buds' have gone!!

The last one I built still had these, albeit showing signs of corrosion/wear in the mould, but in this kit they have gone completely, and the tip been re-profiled.

Guess I'll have to search ebay for early issues - or (gasp!) do some modelling!!

The mould underwent some significant work to change it to the snap'n'glue configuration. Might that have been when they vanished?

Last year I had one of the fairly recent releases alongside a Snap'n'glue release. There were substantial differences between them, I rememebr for instance the locating arrangement on the exhaust stube eing completely different. Either the tooling has been revised since the Snap'n'glue issue, or there was a second set of tooling.

I think I still have one of each of these in the loft, I'll see if I can unearth them over the weekend. Anyone got an original first issue to compare with?

Cheers,

Bill.

I think I've got a blister pack with a "NEW" star on it in the garage. I'll have a look.

That's must have been one of the last kits to ever be BP'd as I have a boxed version from just after it came out (I won it in a raffle at the WsM airshow!) that has "New" on front.

Funnily enough, for many years I would have sworn that neither the Spitfire MkI or the Fw190D came in blister packs, and that they were originally issued in boxes. I must have bought them in BPs, but I had no recollection of them at all.

IIRC the Blister pack started to disappear in late 79 - the new boxes originally had a punch out on the back so they could be hung from the blister pack display stand

There are a few blister packs on ebay

I've got about half a dozen Spitfires in BP's (bought for 30p each when a general stores was selling up its plastic model stock, some time ago now) and I think there might be a 190 in a BP amongst the stash.
