gishuk
"The interior of the auxiliary wing contains a thoroughly equipped engine room, with machine and repair shops, and carries six motors in reserve." There is a small railroad so the engines can be changed in flight , and moved around at ease within the auxiliary wing. The nonfunctioning motor can be replaced with a reserve motor within five minutes and broken motor run over to the machine shop and to be repaired on the spot." insanity, absolute insanity
hatchet
Looking better'n better General! I love the chrome-dome finish. not to mention the inboard jet efflux... Now what was it withthose Oh yeah, they're nuclear engines, right. No need for cockpit lights then...
general melchett
Thanks Martin, we are getting there, just tidying up a few areas and Klear coating ready for decalling...(just sorting through my decal stash to find suitable ones for use, SAC sashes, SAC badges and 7th Bomb Wing badges borrowed from Super Scale B-36 set , as this unit flew B-36's, B52's and is current with B1B's at Fairchild AFB), should be on it's wheels by the end of the week. As for nuclear engines, you're right, hope those escort pilots had good health insurance !!!
robvulcan
fantastic thread i love the look of this and thinking of having ago at one myself though it does look like a bit of a pig to build
mrvr6
Why thank you young Smuts....I do try ...This is the best way to approach this kit.... Very quietly, from behind armed with a large hammer, all the wet and dry you can find, the worlds supply of Milliput and the words ...'Don't Panic' in large, friendly letters emblazoned over your workbench !!! Melchie.... please tell me you bought your towel?

general melchett
Hi casey, well this is another blast from the past !....I did finish it yes, it ended up featuring in Model Aircraft International and Finescale Modeller as well as winning gold gongs and Best in show at the three the shows I took it to...worth all the hassle I guess.....(especially lugging it about in its own suitcase !). Here's a few shots of the old thing, (posted elsewhere).... Trying to give it the air of a period 60's photograph..... Comparison shot with YF-12A....it's BIG !!
StephenCJ
Thanks for posting the pictures. Beautiful Good photographs also. You have made great models of both aircraft. I have never seen a model show. Went to a model club in Brisbane twice, the first and the last time, they made me feel like I had leprosy. I have 3 of these (one I didn't know I had bought, another is a contrail vacform ) Stephen Edited July 22, 2014 by StephenCJ
general melchett
Thanks Stephen, I'm glad you like them. It's a great shame that you had such a bad experience at your model shows, I hope it hasn't put you off too much, they are supposed to be fun when all's said and done ! Luckily over here they are generally very friendly affairs with a lot of useful knowledge and good natured banter swopping hands though of course you do get the odd idiot with an inferiority complex who always seems to know best ! But they generally disappear pretty sharpish..... Three of the beasts eh, if you have the space you should have a go at 'em....I believe the Contrail is a real pig though.... Melchie.... StephenCJ
How about I send you the contrail and you can work your magic on it. I had to pay import duty on the contrail one, it cost me a small fortune. It seems you poms have a good time at clubs and shows. Stephen
general melchett
Well thanks for the kind offer Stephen but I'd rather have my hand beaten wafer thin with a steak tenderizer.........the Contrial kit is just that ...a trial ! and with the AMT/Italeri kit still around it would be a pointless exercise in frustration.....a bit of a challenge as the Italeri kit is it isn't in the same league as the Contrail monster.......sorry to hear that you paid a packet for it...but then for a long time it was the only deal in town really.... Yes we pommies do have a bit of fun at our shows, you ought to see about coming over here to try one out...I'd highly recommend a two day visit to Telford in November but I'm guessing your wallet/bank manager/partner may not be so enthusiastic about the thought, cost and flight ! still you'd be made very welcome... riffraff
Awesome build!! Now all you need is a B-52 in the same scheme along side. Cheers
aircooled
I'm posting a humble request for the restoration of your build photos General sir. I've got one of these kits coming and I was hoping to use your build as the roadmap to success. Sad to see another great thread ruined by PB. David H
Nice to see the production B-70 in the flesh again so to speak. Bill Dye actually did manage to build a Contrails XB-70 back in the late 80s i think, but it was no picnic. It required a lot of corrections to the shape; in particular the nose. He also built a customized acrylic display case for it. I remember when he took it to the IPMS Stockton, CA contest and all people kept saying was, "Nice Display Case". However, it earned him the reputation of being able to turn crap to cake. -d-
Nikolay Polyakov
Absolutely stunning build @general melchett! There’s nothing more to say. The painting scheme choice is wonderful, as a build quality too. Cheers! 👏
general melchett
Hi Nikolay, thank you for the kind comments, they are very much appreciated. It's always enjoyable and refreshing to finish something a bit different and I'm really glad you liked this one. It does get a lot of positive comments at the shows I've taken it too...especially from ex SAC aircrew members! Cheers Melchett...

modelman182
Gentlemen, I'm beginning to see a theme developing around the construction of XB-70 kits. It appears that, in order to build one, one has to be barking mad! It is, therefore, hardly any wonder that I am contemplating such a move. Thank you - and do have a spanking good time!
