Trumpeter 1/35 Morser Karl 00209--Questions

I've just ordered this beast and was wondering if anyone out there has made it and can warn me of any potential pitfalls.

Also---I was wondering how this giant got on and off railway tracks.

Did it just merrily roll over the tracks for transport/deployment or, was there some kind of system such as you get at railway level crossings, where there is a flattened out area so vehicles can drive over the tracks.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Not done this kit myself but there is a good article over at Perth Military Modelling's site that might be worth a look.

Thanks lads.

I've already seen both sites--The perth review I've saved and printed, very useful. The Japanese site I've bookmarked till I learn Japanese!! :deadhorse:

I just can't seem to find a build article anywhere!! (That I can read anyway). :nerd:

Also, I have not come across one picture showing a Karl either on it's transporters ready to leave or just unloaded ready to go into action.

I really find it hard to believe that it would just be lowered and then trundle off across an unprotected railway line! Surely the weight of the beast would wreck the rails!

Anyhoo, lads, thanks again. I guess I'll just have to keep hunting

Ha! Nice one Jonathan!

Having said which, they were mainly used at Sevastopol and Stalingrad so I don't think the tracks came from Krupps eh?

I'm pretty sure they must have had some kind of loading/unloading platform for these beasts tho'. It would only be sensible to, say, carry a load of sleepers on a flatbed along with the Karl.

They could then be deployed where necessary without the need for a permanent platform.

Howeverrr---I just don't know do I?

Still, as Trumpy are bringing out a flatbed truck, it would make an interesting addition to the train to have it loaded up with sleepers or similar.

Yup. Got that one bookmarked as well. Good site but, unfortunately, no build reports which are helpful or pics as I've outlined previously.

Have you seen this one?

1/6th scale, unbelievable!!!

I'd just be happy if I could find any details of the underneath of the gun carriage and the floor of the superstructure under it. the Trumpeter kit just has this as an empty area but there were equibrilators or similar and equipment under there? The space is really noticible when the barrel is in the raised position.

I've got the Dragon kit, which I got for a song before I knew about the Trumpy kit's existence. I believe the Trumpy edition is very good, and blows the Dragon kit (one of their early ones) out of the water in terms of detail from the box, but I'm guessing that the Eduard Big-Ed set will somewhat level the playing field, and the price tag too.

I'll have a squint about Andy, see if I can find owt.

I do know that the trumpy version does have torsion bars and a couple of floor sections but I don't know if there's any more for this area.

Yup. I've been reading up on that one Mike.

I went by the report in 'Perth Military Modelling's' Site and went for the Trumpy one for the reasons they said and the fact that it has the railway trucks as well.

As to the Eduard bits & bobs----I had a look at there web-site for goodies and noticed there was only one set for the Trumpy, (and not a lot at that either!), and about 4 or 5 for the Dragon---says it all really!!
