sulky
Havent done any modeling for years, and then i went and picked up an unbuilt Frog HMS Vanguard for £20. I painted it with referance to the colour pic on the back of the box that was basically the painting guide, as i couldnt find any colour photos of the ship i followed it, excuse the crap round the rudder i forgot to dust it of. For a 55 year old kit (this had a receipt in the box from 1954)it had little detail and i had to paint on the port holes as i didnt want to drill. Maybe when i get back into modeling i might retro fit/remove the port holes. i also didnt fit the 26 20mm guns as they had no armoured enclousures so they looked like little trees on the deck. enjoy and heres with HMS Howe for comparison, i picked this up built for £24 of ebay!!!!!!!it is a 2004 model so you can see the differances in the way things are moulded today
TheModeller
My late Uncle served aboard HMS Howe during her time on the Russian convoys, I've got a Tamiya PoW waiting for decent references and some resin/etch to do a decent job of the old girl... Never seen the Frog Vanguard built up but always fancied one, mind you when I was a kid Frog had quite a selection of RN ships in 1/400th. Cheers for the pics. AnonymousFO98
didn't know there was a froggie Vanguard 'spose they are not that easy to get these days my father and uncle served on Vanguard Welcome to the forum Sulky and thanks for the pics not sure what PE is available in 1/400 to add more detail- scratch building project maybe nice work on a basic kit - but like you say it ain't state of the art injection so fair play! JosephLalor
Nice job on an old and basic kit. I've long wanted to model Britain's last battleship, but my scratchbuilding skills are non-existent. I don't suppose there's any chance that Airfix or Tamiya will step up. If it's available I imagine it might be as a resin kit. Joseph
Mal
A very nice build,Vanguard was particularly handsome ship. The Frog kit was a re-boxed Hasegawa moulding and was actually around 1/430 scale. In the very early seventies Frog re-boxed a number of Hasegawa ship kits (along with aircraft).I was lucky and actually built two Vanguards a Bismark and a Tirpitz from the range at that time, they were all scaled out around 1/450 I also remember a USS Missouri and a Japanese carrier, possibly Agaki in the range. If I remember correctly the first Vanguard that I built could be motorised, although at this distance in time my memory may be playing tricks.I seem to remember that WEM may have produced a photo etch for this kit. By the way welcome to the forum Malcolm Edited May 11, 2009 by Mal

JosephLalor
Nice model. I have this one in the stash. Perhaps i need to start getting some after market stuff in for it.Martin Hi Martin, I recently purchased the Atlantic Models photoetch set from WEM, the price being a little over £17. I'm not aware of any other aftermarket stuff for that kit but others may know better. Joseph

avro683
Has the Vanguard been reissued by anyone else please?not seen one on ebay or elsewhere Apparently Hasegawa have repopped the Frog kit recently for around £35 or so. The press were not very complementary...... Tony
XL929
That's a nice build I've got a 70s or early 80s Hasegawa boxing of this in the stash, the kit has an electric motor, prop and switch included so was considering building mine to take to the local boating lake! Didn't realise there was any photo-etch available for this, am now tempted to get it...
