1/72 Anigrand C-17A Globemaster III - Updated 1 March 22

Recommended Posts

I spent most of the weekend trying to reshape the cargo bay ramp parts, seemed like I was going nowhere with them. I was also trying to figure how I would mount them securely

Does not seem much has changed with the doors, though I can tell you their shape and size is a lot better now.

I then decided I would sort out a couple of other issues so I could close it up. I will get back to the ramp parts near the end and once the fuselage is together.

Made up the para doors

And painted and detailed the floor

Crikey that looks tricky. How did you get the black markings on the floor Ray? Decals?

:goodjob:

Yes Tony, it is a copy of the decal from the Revell kit scaled up to 1/72. It was still al little short so I used strips of black decals to fill the gap.

So another month on and the C-17 mojo is back.

I preparation for sealing up the fuselage I had to tape the subassemblies together

37367227581_a93311abcb_b.jpg

And then I had to figure out how much weight I needed to add to avoid and massive tailsitter

23515469548_7b11ef3b2e_b.jpg

Fun Fact No. 1

The model before nose weight was added weighed approx 1.4kg

Fun Fact No. 2

The amount of nose weight required was approx 285g (not your piddly 5-7g for those wimpy injection moulded kits) :D

Weight installed

My cutting mat is A2 size

And finally, some size comparisons with a couple of in-progress builds

The fuselage is now together, but before closing up I had to add a screen that goes around the entry door which can be seen on the left up front.

Turning my attention to seams and filling pin holes, oh what fun.

I am also fixing up the vertical stab. I had previously cut out the rudders so I could pose them slightly offset as they usually are when the jet is parked.

36735863854_6dde3d7e00_b.jpg

I didn't get it quite right the first time around, so now I have had to increase the size of the rubber cut out and lengthen the rudder panels.

36735863534_1815d8dec8_b.jpg

The top 2 panels have been reshaped with the addition of some card. I also have to remove some material from the base of the fin as the curve is not quite right. You can just see the marked area at the base of the leading edge.

The area where the two parts of the cabin ceiling came together is a bit of a mess. I will fix it as much I can.

The horizontal stabs are getting some attention as well, I am drooping the elevators like on the real thing again when parked.

Time for more cutting, filling, and sanding.

I'm sure I read in another thread that you were itching to get back to this one to partner the A400M - or maybe I dreamt that?

Indeed Kirk, I have been tinkering with it during the A400 build. I have been reworking the windscreen and forward fuselage shape (again).

Update to thread soon,

Well, almost 18 months since the last update!

Time to spend time on this build again with renewed enthusiasm.

I had issues with the nose and puttied areas cracking so off it came and a new nose fashioned with milliput. the shape still needs refining. I was not happy with the cockpit windscreen pillars so they have come out along with the clear panels and they will be repositioned.

Finally, I got around to replicating the support structure and ribbing in the starboard main gear sponson. This is now getting some reinforcing work to the gear support tabs.

I also reshaped the sponson front section to make it more true to the prototype

Tail unit components whit flight control surfaces removed, which will be repositioned in power off positions.

Could this be the year we see it at ScaleACT?

Maybe!

I did some scribing of tail surfaces last night, not very exciting but the build is progressing again!

Only 9 months for this update :D

Time to test fit the gear legs and the start of the 3rd or 4th reshape of the nose/cockpit, the shape had been bugging me and I have realized I added too much putty to the nose, so some of that will be coming off.  I also sawed the roof of the cockpit off in another attempt to get the windscreen panels the right shape and size.

Looking good, Ray - what's the old saying... one step forwards, two back..?:)

My advice, for what it's worth, it's to give what you've done so far a spray of primer - all the different colours as it currently stands make it harder to see the subtle shapes and contours. Perhaps one uniform colour will make the final shaping easier..?

Looking forward to more!

Tom

THATS AWESOME!!

and the minute you put on the final pieces and set it in the display cabinet the Kinetic one will become available...well I’m still hoping anyway, there’s no way I could do what you’ve done to get as good a C 17 from this kit

Thanks Tom, I have been thinking about some primer very soon, I just need to get the windscreen sorted (again). I know there will be some more filling required as well.

I have read on the Kinetic FB page that their C-17 is not happening now, they expect it will cost too much for the modeller, in the order of US$500 which is unfortunate. I can't understand why so much when other comparable kits (Revell A400 for instance) is a lot cheaper. So with that in mind (an that the RAAF's 100 Anniversary is this year) I thought I should get a move on with this one.

That's some work Ray!

I'd love a 1/72 C-17 but there;s no way I could wrestle this beast into anything like a good shape.

Edge

Thanks, Edge I have been on this one for over 10 years.

  • 6 months later...

Not much to update, after a 15 month wait I received a nice vacformed windscreen for the build, no more requirement to try and scratch build the framing and panels now

Not sure when I will get back to finish this (it was supposed to be by October for a club display) as I am moving house interstate in a couple months 😞

  • 1 month later...

A lockdown here for the past few weeks brings renewed interest in the Globemaster, so I turned my attention to finishing off the the wings.

I had scribed one of the wings some time ago using the Revell 1/144 kit wing as a reference, so the top of the other wing was done yesterday as part of a club online build day.
51492496280_cc274f97c2_b.jpg

I then turned my attention to the underside and as I was getting close to finishing it off some of the line locations conflicted with the flap track fairing locations, I turned to the Revell wing and compared locations and found they were out on the Anigrand wing. It turns out the engine mount locations were also off.
51492280889_ce0d7ae584_b.jpg

So I drilled new mounting holes for the fairings, that's better!
51491567726_7b265dd800_b.jpg

Then I compared the shape of the Anigrand fairings to the Revell ones and guess what? They are wrong as well! Who would have thought!
51491567696_460a13ef3f_b.jpg

So out with the files, plastic card and putty to reshape them. The new shapes are considerably different
51491567636_9319c644be_b.jpg

One set almost done, then onto the others using the first set as templates. Keeps me occupied for a while I suppose.

Scribing of the wings done, just had to add the oval (tank entry?) panels

Now I have turned to finishing reshaping the remaining engine pylons, I had one and a half done some time (years?) ago.  One and a half more done, so now only to to go
51502190696_5dbe01ae56_b.jpg

And finally did a test fit of the wing parts (minus the winglet) to see how it is looking

Time to drag this one out again, a test fit of the major subassemblies to see where I am at.

It looks like the nose gear leg will need lengthening, various doors need fabrication and the fuselage scribing to be done.
