Mate painted this in real life and another did the sign writing on it, the Frankie IE part of it is on a different angle as it is believed he was standing on steps for the FRANK part then on the ground for the IE so the word kinks level at the end :)

They based it on wartime photos they had when they did the scheme, you can see what I mean on this picture, there are lots on the web. There was an article with possibly original pics about the repaint in Flypast or Aeroplane Monthly a few years back, will look see if I still have it. Was done by Mick Allen at Toweston.

Thanks for your help.

The white band on the top of the wing was that on the orignal aircraft?

Hi Al,

Yes it would almost certainly of carried white over wing id bands, when the upper wing surfaces were camouflaged plus similar bands on the tail surfaces.I've seen a photo of this aircraft presumably later in the war, were it appears to of have had the camouflaged stripped off the upper surfaces of the wings with black id bands substituted for the white, while the fuselage remains camouflage. The yellow nose and spinner on Ferocious Frankie covered the same area as shown in the Aeromaster instructions not as shown on the preserved aircraft.

Hi Al,

I think you will find there were at least two P-51D Ferocious Frankie's flown by Wallace Hopkins the preserved aircraft's paint scheme appears in part to be based on the later aircraft 411568 this would make sense as this aircraft had a fin fillet. The aircraft on the decal sheet represents the earlier aircraft note the different nos of kill markings. One thing I find strange is that there is a clear photograph of 411568 it definitely has silver doped wings with a black id strip plus the name Ferocious Frankie is written in a single line the yellow nose is painted in a similar but not identical way to the preserved aircraft, there is no camouflage on the rear fuselage.I would say go with the decals they seem to match pretty closely the photograph you have found of the actual aircraft.I've another shot of this aircraft presumably taken at the same time but from above and to the port side.If you go to the 361 F.G. web site there are a number of photographs of these aircraft both black and white and colour (www.361fg.com).
