Peter Marshall
Oops - realised today I hadn't posted anything for the latest kit I started last weekend. Building this for the SEAC group build on Promodeller.com, as something different from all of the Thuds / Phantoms. Building completely OOB. Box: This seems to be a typical Roden kit, with a little flash, lovely details and very soft plastic. Construction starts with the cockpit, but this isn't as straightforward as normal. The main instrument panel is built then a supplementary panel for the observer is attached to the side. This is the instruments for the FLIR camera - so 'I see you Charlie !' Then the cockpit floor and rear bulkhead are built up, and the overhead switches. The detail in this kit is fantastic, but at the price of EVERYTHING being made up of loads of small sub components. The throttles are 5 parts in themselves. In this shot you can just about see the overhead switches for the observer's electronics. With the cockpit assembled and the Ejector seats it all looks like this: Then I stuffed the nose with as much lead as it would hold, and fitted the fuselage together. It needed a couple of spots of filler on the rear cockpit bulkhead, and around the nose joint but nothing major. Comments welcomed as always. keefr22
Good start to an interesting build - you don't see one of those every day!! 'Pit is looking very nice, like your paintwork on the seats & panels. And isn't that box-art fantastic??!! Looking forward to progress on this one! Peter Marshall
Small update for today . I have sanded the nose and fuselage joints, and then rescribed the panel lines removed during sanding. I then dipped the canopies in Klear, masked with parafilm and started building the greenhouse..... Attached the canopies with a combination of CA to hold in place, and Gator Glue for the main adhesive. There is a small ridge at the back as the top piece doesn't have quite the right arc to it to fit cleanly, and I thought a ridge would be easier to fix at the back. Smothered this with a little CA and filler powder, to fill the step and once it's all cured I will sand it flush. Hopefully this looks like the nastiest bit of the kit over with.... Peter Marshall
A little more done today. I have masked and fitted the side windows which took a lot of fitting as once again the curve isn't quite right, but with care they do fit. I also added some filler on the ridge behind the cockpit, and sanded it flush with the fuselage. I then rescribed the panel lines that were removed when I was sanding - seems to be a theme with this kit. When sanding the rear of the cockpit, I caught the parafilm masking, so remasked one of the windows with tape. Next up is the rear of the turbo props, glued together then ran some Mr Surfacer 1200 along the joint to try and get them smooth. I have then given them a couple of coats of Alclad II grey primer to get everything smooth ready for the alclads and soot tomorrow.
Arie
I've one of these bug-eyed things staring out at me from the 'yet to build' shelf... interested to see how she builds up...looks good thus far mate!
Peter Marshall
Quick update for today - I got a lot less done than I planned, mainly due to my Father buying a new Television, and then wanting me to set it up, and explain EVERYTHING about it...... Anyway, I sprayed the Turboprop exhausts with a couple of layers of Alclad II Grey Primer, which has smoothed everything out nicely. I then painted them, first spraying flat black, then Alclad pale burnt metal deep in the centres, followed by Alclad Jet Exhaust on the edges. Finally I rubbed over the edges and back with some Tamiya Weathering Compount (soot). I like the effect I have got. Peter
Martian
Nice work so far! I hing the US coast guard used Mohawks and they looked very smart in the red and white scheme. Martin
mikeew
Nice work so far Peter. I always fancied a shot at one of these, might have to realise that dream after seing this.
Daryl J.
Looks good! Added FYI: A patient in the practice I sold was a Mohawk driver and loved how fast it was at 50 feet above sea level. One story he told was about being in Vietnam.....when the Mohawks showed up, the VC went home ASAP whereas they'd linger when other aircraft were in the area. He'd not elaborate much so I'd not push but somewhere in that silence lie some stories. Also, he delivered a Mohawk to the Evergreen Aviation Museum and through his insistence it remains very close to flyable. Enjoying watching your build. Daryl J. Peter Marshall
More done today on the Mohawk Building up the Engine Nacelles - one of them was very slightly short shot, so a touch of filler. Then built up the rest of the wings and fitted them - needed a little blending between the front of the nacelle and the rest of the wing, but a little Mr Surfacer and some light sanding and all was well. And the overall effect I then sorted out the wing root where there was a slight gap on the Left wing - once again Mr Surfacer followed by rubbing with a cotton bud soaked in IPA I have also fitted the tail, but forgot to take a photo (Doh), leaving everything to dry off for a bit now Peter

Peter Marshall
A bit more done today - first a photo of the tail that I fitted yesterday. Then made up the rocket pods, filled the gaps, and sprayed them white. Sprayed the wheel wells white, and fitted the weapon pylons to the wings. Then the Air brakes - what a nightmare. If you want the Air brakes closed you have to sand the back of them really thin. Got the left hand side one to fit reasonably well, it will need a bit of sanding and filler. The Right hand side brake split while sanding, so out with the milliput. Fitted milliput and then a couple of passes with the carving tools dipped in water to smooth it out. So tomorrow will be some sanding...... Peter
Peter Marshall
Some more done today - I have finished off the rocket pods. Painted the ends Silver, painted the rocket tips olive drab, and then a raw umber oil wash and an ink wash. made up the drop tanks, which like a lot of this kit required some sanding to fit. Then masked off the wheel wells with blue tak, and preshaded. That will be it for today, its too cold in the shed for spraying a topcoat.

Peter Marshall
Got the OD sprayed this afternoon. This is what it looks like after a coat of klear. Peter - who is now trying to regain feeling in his hands from the freezing shed - can't have the heater on when spraying, otherwise the paint dries on the needle.... Peter Marshall
Finished 99% of the decals today - The decals were to be honest awful, thin, brittle and out of register. After a battle I have got most of them on, two 'ARMY' decals simply disintegrated as did one of the serial numbers. There are still a couple of decals to add, but these are on the flat black areas that I haven't sprayed yet. Peter
Peter Marshall
More done today Masked off all the black areas for spraying. Then sprayed them, and what a surprise, when i removed the tape the decals fell off. The decals in this kit have all been awful - they don't stick but they do leave a residue when they fall off. So I had to sand the decal residue and respray some of the olive drab. Then made the walkways using jammydog tape that I sprayed black rather than using the decals. Then found another U.S. Army decal, then sprayed all of the Mohawk with Vallejo Matt Varnish. Tomorrow, oil washes.... Peter
