Antoine
I'd get this corsair lattely: I'd like to build it as an FAA carsair. Apart from what I've found on Fleet air arm archive.net, I didn't find many information about Corsair I in FAA service. AFAIK, they were kept in the USA fro training, and they've never seen combat. Could you help? I'm looking for: - Information about their units - Any decals sheet available (Aeromaster is OOP, but maybe Techmod? - Any pics. - Any color profile. - Any tips about differences between these corsair and American F4U-1. Also, did the RNZAF get some? Thank you very much to any helping hand. Antoine

David H
Hi Antoine, First off, the links that others have posted to the other BM threads are a VERY good starting point. Early FAA Corsairs are sort of a confusing subject to delve into, and i'm gonna completely forgo any comments about colors as delivered by Vought. My understanding is the two US-Based FAA Corsair units were at Quonset Point, RI (where quite a few Corsair units formed, BTW), and NAS Brunswick, ME. One photograph found in the AJ Press book purportedly depicts a Corsair I over Machrahanish. Not sure if it was in a training role or not. A couple of other details to keep an eye out for when checking photos: 1) Short tail wheel strut with pneumatic tire. 2) Original propeller blade type (as found in kit), with black propeller hub. 3) Original , 360-degree "Wrap Around" cowl flaps. Can be done by splicing two sets of the opened Tamiya Cowl flap together. 4) Not sure about clipped wing tips. Best info i have is the majority used stateside had the full span wings. I think the tips were clipped by Backburn after the planes got to the UK. Also not sure about seat harnesses, or those extra vents on the rear fuselage later Corsairs displayed. 5) i don't believe these aircraft were rigged for the Brewster bomb rack, so the little notch in the oil cooler flap needs to be filled in. Not difficult. 6) These aircraft had the wing tanks, but the fuel filler cap locations are misplaced. They need to be moved inboard to a similar location next to the next inboard chordwise panel line. While you're at it, you can add the wing tank fuel drain masts on the wing underside. Not at all hard to do. 7) I would highly recommend the Ultracast F4U Pilots seat (Sutton Harness notwithstanding), the smooth tread tires, and their exhaust stacks. Lowering the flaps is a matter of personal choice. Finally, as to the Canopy, i have seen both types of birdcage, both with and without the quarter panel windows. HTH.
