johnH
Hi All Have just started building Trumpeters SS Jeremiah O'Brien - for old times sake. I sailed on one & worked on several others in the '60s which were owned by a Greek company. My problem is with Trumpeters colours. I'm in the dark as to what '20B Dark Grey' is & hazy about '5H Haze Grey'. Is there anybody out there with the information I require? Gunze numbers start with 'H' which is why I'm confused - not that that is too difficult JohnH

I've seen 35237 quoted as an FS match for 5-H, and I believe that Hu:79 is a match for 20B. It's in the Humbrol acrylic range. If JohnH is not restricted to acrylics, he should find these in the WEM Colourcoats range. Joseph Edited January 4, 2009 by JosephLalor

I think John Snyder posts here; he's WEM's naval colour researcher, and anything I know about US Navy ship colours comes from him and Del Palmieri. I take it that Jeremiah O'Brien was a Liberty Ship. JohnH Hi John, As others have already mentioned, those were paint codes for two of the USN's paint colours during WW2. Neither colour can be matched using the FS system, since that did not come into existence until the 1950s and has no relationship to the WW2 USN colours, which were based on the 1929 Munsell Book of Color. Both were, technically, "purple-blues" as were all the USN's grays until very late in the war when a shortage of blue pigments caused them to change to neutral grays. We have all the USN grays accurately matched and available in our Colourcoats line of enamels: US 05, 5-H Haze Gray; US 10, 20-B Deck Blue. No minimum order on paints, and we ship worldwide.
