Airfix TSR.2

Recommended Posts

Certainly does Geoff ! Thanks :thumbsup2:

Glad you like it Gary, thanks mate :)

Nev - some of the cables come with the eduard set, the orange bunched cables are just the copper strands of a household power cable all twisted together, and the others are fuse wire.

Great progress John

Question: Hows the kit fit? I've heard stories of bad to...worse

..worse :(

Fantastic job John, :clap2:

Cheers Phil :)

From the quick fondle of one of mine, the fit seems to be... quirky  I think Skii's build is testament to his skills, in that he's making it look so easy (except for the wheel bay/avionics interface  sorry  ) :)

TSR2 Fit Issues:-

1. Cockpit, fits in the portside fuselage fine but can be difficult on the other side of the fuselage, there is a slight flaw in the moulding on the cockpit partition on that side preventing a flush fit.

2. Need to get the Nose wheel bay accurately set flush with the lower fuselage as has a tendancy to set off centre.

3. Fit the inner outer intakes first then leave the outer intake loose to allow for plenty of dry fitting, testing and tweaking. when happy fix the intake bullet in place and allow to cure before further fettling with the outer intake coaming later on in the build.

4. Sand down the lower inside edge of the lower wings to get a better fit to the wing before joining. (Don't forget to drill the pylon holes if using the MAM sets.

5. When assembling the fuselage halves use the wing dry fitted to get the rear fuselage in the correct shape whilst curing.

6. Fit the weapons bay/undercarriage in place to act as main bulkhead for the rear fuselage.

7. Dont fit the upper panels of the fueslage untill after the wing is fitted its alot easier to fettle with these whilst loose than trying to fix the wing. The Fwd panel can get a better fit if small slithers of plastic card to raise the panels aft edge to get a flusher join with the wing.

Continued

8. If doing the upper airbrakes closed then file off the interior detail of the airbrake to get a flush fit. Like many features of the Airfix kit the parts are engineered to be fitted open and in closed configuration leave alot to be desired fit wise.

9. Fit the main gear legs into place as these cannot be correctly placed if the under fuselage has been fixed in place.

10. The lower fuselage Pan fit is not that great, its two wide to fit in the recesss aft of the nose wheel bay and need to trimmed to fit. The fit of this part to the fuselage sides also creates an overhang, so to limit this glue one side to ensure as flush a fit as possible, then once dry do the other side.

11. The panel fwd of the nose gear is not a good fit and needs some worth to fit fluch and then filler to conform to the rest of the fuselage.

12. The Rear nose wheel doors are designed to be fitted dropped as per XR220, but in operation these should actually be closed. Howevere they are to narrow to correctly fill the gap so better replaced by a single piece of plastic card suitable to fit the bay and conform with the fuselage shape.

13. The tail surfaces need a bit of sanding on their matining faces to confrom to the fuselage shape.

14. The cockpit canopy is not great, the fit is not that true for a closed position, and the plastic a little too thick and ill defined for painting.

Nope its not a state of the art kit, but it was not intended to, yes some modelling skill is required to assemble one, but its the only one we have and were glad for it to be produced. Its been a bit over engineered to match XR220 as she is at cosford with all the wheel doors open, and whilst nice to have the option it makes the assembly of a standard version that bit more complex.

Cheers

Geoff

(John - sorry for hijacking the build thread slightly. but just pointing out some of the areas to watch out for with this kit)

ew........... :whistling:

Very nicely done Geoff, others will find that very useful.

I have noticed after cramming the resin into the nose and sealing everything up, I have a warped fuselage too, the bomb bay is pointing in a different direction to the fuselage :o:( - still, with some careful sanding and cutting, I've made it slightly less pronounced..

I wouldn't describe it as a dog of a kit, not at all, but it does require a fair bit of work and dry fitting, and as you rightly say Geoff, no other injection-moulded kit manufacturer has stepped up to the plate with this aircraft.

Gawd... It makes my vacform obsession seem like a good idea!

I'm tempted to build the Dynavector Kit first & leave the two Airfix ones to keep the dust off my shelves for now. Still - that's a valuable list of things to watch out for Geoff. You're to be applauded for sharing it with us

I must admit I have been toying witht he idea of letting one of mine go. Firstly 1/72 isn't really my thing and after looking at the work involved,,,, well.

But fair does John. Thats some top class work, again. Makes me sick.

lol - don't you worry mate - you are well capable of tackling it, its nothing compared to the work you did on your Victor ;)

John,

that cable work you have done looks great. This one is going to be a stunner when its done.

cheers Darren :)

More progress - the nosecone went on, and after considerable sanding and rescribing it actually fit the contours of the fuselage  - vacform windscreen on and puttied flush with the fuselage.

Also a test fit of the landing gear, I assembled the fuselage underside before attaching the main gear legs - thankfully they rotate and click into place, even with the photoetch in the gear bay - the model sits comfortably and sturdily with all 3 legs dry-fitted in position.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cheers chaps :)

Aaah the trademark Skii model pose ;)

Yeah I do like that one :whistling:

Right - the main fuselage assembly went into the paintshop today, the model was pre-shaded in dark sea grey over the white primer base, and then I gave the Revell acrylic white a try... and I was most impressed with the way it airbrushed, highly recommended.
