Airfix TSR.2

Right chaps - just a run down of the work so far

First thing I tackled was the wheels, the Eduard undercarriage set provides some nice photo-etch wheel hubs that will look a hell of a lot better than the stock model versions, next the tread on all the wheels was rescribed.

Next the main gear undercarriage bay was dremelled out and the eduard details painstakingly inserted, this has to have been one of the most god-awful fiddly things I've ever had the misfortune to do, but I gues the end result will look good under a layer of paint - should have bought the resin one... ah well.... :whistling:

Next the fuselage intakes - these need quite a bit of work to improve, they don't fit exactly perfectly, but with a bit of milliput, they look better. A small strip of styrene card was glued around the shock cone to give the impression of the shock-cone as a component which is inserted into the main intake assembly. The splitter plate was thinned out at the top and bottom of the intake, and a small piece of styrene card used to connect the upper and lower corners to the fuselage

Finally auziliary intake doors made from styrene card added instead of the kit moulded-on versons.

- I'm happy with how they look now

Next thing to do was a bit of kit surgery, the CMK resin cockpit set comes with a beautiful representation of the electronics bay which is housed in very large access doors directly behind the cockpit. Also You may notice the prominent fuselage rivet patterns which I used my scriber to add.

Yeah I couldn't resist grabbing the paint and adding a splash of colour to it - just a quick undercoat with flat black, followed by repeatedly lighter coats of grey to accentuate the detail. I've yet to add the photo-etch brackets on the shelves, and it will also have a wash to further accentuate the surface detail :)

Thats pretty much it for the moment - more progress very soon ;)

Lovely job Squire... first time I've seen one of your builds from the beginning (almost)... looking forward to seeing more. I think the CMK gear/weapons bay may be a slightly less fiddly way to go for next time, as it's all moulded in the one piece, although it introduces its own problems being a bit short for the slot. Looks fabulous so far though! :D

I've got 2 of these puppies in my stash with more resin than my shelves can reasonably be expected to cope with... It'll be very useful for Skii to conquer all of the kit's vices, so I don't have to

How to build a TSR.2 article anyone? ;)

Struggling with the kit myself, and I hope that the next generation Airfix will be better in the fit and fidelity department than this one, beause engraved panel lines doesn't make it state of the art... You've done a cracking job so far, and if it's up to your usual standards, we're in for a treat.

Nope the fits not brilliant in places, it aint too bad but some of the engineering and thus the fit is probably not what Trev would have preferred. What people forget is that at the Time it was a big step for Airfix to take when the funding was tight. Our campainging had made them take the risk and produce it but when i chatted to the then director at the anouncement you could see he wasn't convinced. This is why they marketed it as a limited run (to raise demand higher) and designed and maunfactured by a new chinese subcontratcor. We were just glad of a decent injection moulded TSR2, yes things could have been done better but its unlikely anybody else would have justified the investment in a accurate super detailed kit of this cancelled aircraft.

How'd I miss this one - more importantly, how can you afford one of these John? Those belts look so good - trust your showing em off with the canopy up.

very very nice mate.

Thanks Gary - a very nice chap over on ARC called Gerard sold me the unopened TSR.2 for £25 inc postage, fantastic considering he could quite easily have sold it on Ebay for silly money! I guess I asked the question at the right time, and the right chap responded, either way I think he just wanted to see one built up, and not shrinkwrapped for the rest of eternity. Top bloke :)

Yup - this will be fully unbuttoned matey ;)

:o ........1/72nd?

JEEZ, that's outstanding Skii

.......but it'd better be WHITE or I'm sendin' da boyz rahnd.....:coolio:

;)

LOL Guy, cheers fella :D yep - white , not DAZ white, but white nonetheless, I'm doing XR-219 as she would have appeared during a pre-flight check.

Looking fantastic John

Impressive stuff

Cheers Sean :)

I would have sold you one of mine if you were desperate John  Just didn't get chance to make you suffer for it :weep:

lol - actually Mike I just posted a tongue-in-cheek request on the wanted board at ARC, just on the off chance. I nearly fell off my chair when I got a pm the next day offering me the kit at the original RRP incl. P&P

Just goes to show its always worth asking the question :speak_cool:

Innit though... you were very lucky there, boyo ;)

I wouldn't have been able to let you have it at cost though, cos I'd have needed to offload all the resin to you too... LOTS of resin :D
