psdavidson Posted September 11 Posted September 11 I've managed to get some rail related models into a number of previous GBs 14
Enzo the Magnificent Posted September 11 Author Posted September 11 A selection of BR 16t mineral wagons using various Parkside and Dapol/Airfix/Rosebud kits. Here is one of them in a diorama. 14
Enzo the Magnificent Posted September 11 Author Posted September 11 Here is a BR Class 55 Deltic. It's a modified Dapol chassis with a Hornby bodyshell. Same chassis. Different bodyshell. A scrapped Class 37. The bogies are from the Dapol Deltic kit. The bodyshell is again from Hornby. Finally, here is Mallard built as a static model from lots of RTR parts from the spares box. 14
Mjwomack Posted September 11 Posted September 11 Like @psdavidson I slip railway items into other GBs and seem to get away with it https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/forum/797-go-large-or-go-home-gb/ In LGB scale, a massively modified Bole Lazer Craft model of Walberswick station on the Halesworth to Southwold line. It had a gents but no ladies because that was considered unseemly! And from the Golden Age of Transport the N Gauge Society, Gresley Full Brake, which @Beardybloke is suggesting he'll build correctly in this GB 12
Marklo Posted September 11 Posted September 11 Hasegawa 1/72 Morser Karl probably the only railway related build I’ve ever made 😁 Actually now that I remember it I did mss as me a model of Casey Junior from Dumbo for my daughter to use in her Brio railway set ( she was a big Thomas the tank engine fan as well) Ahh marvellous nostalgia. 10 1

Being primarily a railway modeller, I've got quite a few past builds, so I'll pick some highlights from the last year or so. Some Ffestiniog Railway 1870s stock in etched brass - more or less finished, but awaiting class, number and crest transfers: A (working) De Winton vertical boiler tank locomotive as used in the North Wales quarries from an RT Models etched nickel kit (Give Peace a Chance GB) - on my pizza layout test track: A Settle & Carlisle-style locomotive shed diorama (Metcalfe Models cardboard kit, also Give Peace a Chance): And finally, a couple of older ones - a 1960s-style Ffestiniog Railway train (whitemetal locos, etched coach): 10 2

2996 Victor Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Some ancient kit built Ratio and CooperCraft 4mm wagons: The cattle wagon and Iron Mink have transfer lettering, the other are hand-lettered. All OO gauge. Cheers, Mark 12
2996 Victor Posted September 12 Posted September 12 And a few more slightly more recent, though. Slater's Midland 3-plank dropside converted to a ballast wagon: A pair of S&DJR high sided opens, Slater's bodies on scratch underframes, still missing their brake levers: Cambrian Railways high-sided open, Cambrian Models on a scratch underframe and not quite finished: CamRys low-sided open, Coastline Models 3d-printed: Cheers, Mark 12
2996 Victor Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Finally from me, at least until I find more photos , I was a bit too much of an armchair modeller a few years back..... 🎩 Cheers, Mark 5 5
stevej60 Posted September 13 Posted September 13 Hi folk's not so long ago dabbled in a few Airfix kit's for the classic GB. 12
Paul821 Posted September 14 Posted September 14 As mentioned in my build thread a couple of years ago I did a "proof of concept" for a working diorama using 5mm Foam Board for the base. apart from the damage to the meadow edge it has survived well. It's currently sitting in the middle of my test track, which as some of you will notice is actually a Hornby Trackmat layout. It was built for a your friend of ours, but his railway interest never progressed beyond Thomas the Tank Engine and he has moved onto video games and football. As a result the layout was passed to me. 5
Mr T Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Some wagons and coaches I have built and bodged over the years An LMS Long Low Wagon (BR code 'Plate') from a Chivers Fineline kit and a BR Banana Van. Hornby Dublo/Dapol on a Parkside Dundas underframe Airfix/Dapol LMS 60ft Corridor Composite. Underframe has added and corrected detail, and handrails added. New Bachmann LMS bogies and a repaint. 21T LNER Loco coal wagon from a Parkside Dundas kit.!2T LMS 5 plank wagon (not sure of the diagram number) from a Ratio kit. Diesel Brake Tender from a hideous Genesis white metal kit with Bachmann LMS bogies. This kit was not easy, nothing fitted without a lot of fettling. The roof section was so over length that I took a saw to it, and the end pieces were oversized. I didn't even bother with the kit bogies, as they were riddled with flash and misshapen. Oh, and don't even ask about the biblical quote on the instructions and the fish symbol on the underside of the roof, Two Cambrian kits, a 'Catfish' and a 'Mermaid', both ballast wagons, and a Parkside Dundas 'Grampus' Ballast and sleeper wagon. BR used names associated animals living in, on or above the sea as a short code for their engineering stock. Parkside Dundas Pallet van, LMS 12T goods van using an Airfix Dapol body on a Parkside Dundas underframe and an LMS Banana van from a Ratio kit. Cut and shut from two scrap wagons, as the originals are under length. bogies were detailed and partially corrected with new wheels running in brass bearings LMS CCT and a GWR 'Fruit D', both from Parkside Dundas kits 35T Class B oil tank wagon (Airfix kit) and ICI Liquid chlorine rank wagon. Hornby Dublo tank on a Dapol 12T underframe One day I plan to have a bit of a layout to run these and the other rolling stock I have. 9
kitchentable Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Hi I made this from the Airfix/Dapol kit a few years ago. I think I surprised myself! It was great fun. One thing I regret is sticking with the 00 gauge narrow track. It would have been no more work to widen it to the proper track dimension. kitchentable 8 3
PeterB Posted September 18 Posted September 18 (edited) Here are the 4 Dapol locos I built. The two Schools represent the early Maunsell version (with smoke deflectors as fitted not long after entering service) and the later Bullied modified one with the Lemaitre type chimney. With the exception of the Austerity tank I spent rather more on decals and aftermarket fittings than on the kits themselves - particularly with all the etch I added to Barnstaple. You will note that I cut off all the moulded handrails and replaced them with wire which I think is a relatively simple but effective improvement. I also modified the front end of the frame/footplate on the West Country to make it look a little more like the real thing, and added lamp irons, couplings, brake/heating pipes and fall plates where applicable. With hindsight I probably should have replaced the coal as well. Pete Edited September 18 by PeterB 12
Rob Sutto Posted September 19 Posted September 19 I built one of the Revell HO locos for the Golden Age of Travel GB last year, Schnellzuglokomotive BR 01: Really enjoyed it, definitely a step up from the very tired ye olde Dapol moulds. Also benefits from being a proper scale! 8 2
Bengalensis Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Here are the few finished railway models I currently have. The old Airfix kit of the Rocket. After some attempts as a kid long ago I finally built this one back in 2012, and enjoyed the build a lot. Japanese National Railways EH10 class, Aoshima 1/50 scale kit, also finished in 2012. Interesting kit that actually has a full interior. Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, Revell (ex Monogram) 1/87 scale. Built but never quite finished in 2005/2006 I think. What remains is some varnish, the decals, some slight weathering and a finish coat. A shame really. Perhaps I shall try to get that done when (if) I reach the same stage with my entry in this GB… Not quite railway perhaps, but still, an old tram from Tokyo. A kit from G-Mark Industries in 1/45 scale. Issued in 1977 according to Scalemates, and I did build this back in the late ‘70’s, all brush painted. I think my father bought it for me on one of his abroad business trips. 10
Bonhoff Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Some of mine "Boxworks Wharf" - A 009 scale layout, "Scalescenes" card kit, 3D printed locos, mixture of kit and scratch built wagons. 1/72nd scale Ssyms 80t Flat Wagon with Tiger Tank Load 009 scale WDLR type "D" bogie van Will be building a number of things over the course of this GB - LMS/Midland signal box, some more WDLR wagons plus whatever else I can do within the allotted timescale. Hope everyone has a good GB IanJ 6 1
paul-muc Posted September 27 Posted September 27 I've once built Trevithick's Pen-y-Daren in a GB at ATF. Wikipedia says 1803 which means it was before the period of this GB. I like that unique design, so I hope you don't mind. 4
Bandsaw Steve Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Hogwarts Express This is one my daughter and I built together a few years ago. This is completely scratchbuilt, although the wheels are 3D printed and the spooky dudes are from Games Workshop. The WIP thread can be found here... https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235057601-hogwarts-express-scratchbuild-148-scale/ 7 2
theplasticsurgeon Posted September 27 Posted September 27 For @Billos, @Bengalensis, and @Redstaff, here's my Dapol Evening Star. 10
Mjwomack Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Ian @Redstaff has wondered if we can get all the Dapol...Kitmasters built in here- harder than it sounds, but here's the Italian Tank Loco from Lesser Known Classics. Best viewed after a lot of vino Italiano 4
Bengalensis Posted October 21 Posted October 21 It only took a bit more than 20 years, but now at last, thanks to this GB, I have finished the very last steps of my Big Boy. It’s the Revell (ex Monogram) 1/87 kit. It got sat aside after basic painting and assembly, I think in 2004, and has since mostly been forgotten on a top display cabinet shelf. Shame. The transfers were still laying where I put them safely aside, so now I sprayed gloss varnish, applied the transfers, varnished again and then did some washing and dry brushing and a very light over spray of medium grey before a final flat varnish. I opted to make a neutral base from a clean HO track on a simple piece of oak. So here it is, finally. 8 2
