Planebuilder62 Posted September 9 Posted September 9 (edited) Hi there After checking with @81-er this model is allowed to join this GB as it was still flying up to 1947. This is my second entry to this GB so I hope to get it built inside the time limit. Here is what was in the box, everything in one compartmentalised plastic bag. Lots of resin bits and vac form transperencies. Regards Toby Edited October 4 by Planebuilder62 11
modelling minion Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Welcome back and with a fantastic choice, this is such a unique looking aircraft and will make a great addition to the gallery. Very much looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
81-er Posted September 10 Posted September 10 It's good to see this weird & wonderful aircraft in the GB. It’s one I’d like to build a model of one day, so I’m interested in seeing how this kit goes together James
Planebuilder62 Posted September 14 Author Posted September 14 Building has started. Looking at various V-173 pictures I found that inside the air intakes to the engines, there are some small internal struts visible. These have been made using short sections of Evergreen square section rod being glued to the roof of the homemade intake. To ensure the yellow paint is evenly distributed inside the intake, these parts were pre-painted. The cockpit internals are in the process of painting. I managed to break then thin resin moulding for the roll over hoop so this was scatch built and painted. Here is what has happened. Regards Toby 7
modelling minion Posted September 14 Posted September 14 Thats very nice work Toby, she looks very good, a bit like something from Star Wars.
Planebuilder62 Posted September 28 Author Posted September 28 From this angle I think the plane looks like either Robbie the Robot from Lost in Space or the alien single seat spaceship from Independance Day. The decals are on and the propeller blades have had a coat of streaky brown oil paint to simulate the wooden texture of the original plane blades. Regards Toby 9
Pete in Lincs Posted September 28 Posted September 28 It also has a touch of the flying sub from Voyage to the bottom of the sea. The build looks good. Nice paint. 2
modelling minion Posted September 28 Posted September 28 That looks superb, a really nice smooth coat of yellow that makes the markings stand out very nicely. 1
Planebuilder62 Posted October 4 Author Posted October 4 (edited) Well I got the rotor’s or propellers finshed and glued on today. Getting the stripes on the tips took a few rounds of masking and then the streaky oil paint over pale brown took a week to dry to be on the safe side. To ensure the oil paint did not rub off when handling some Light Sheen Alclad varnish was used. When the masking was removed I found a tiny bit of masking tape stuck to the inside of the under nose section. Its pretty small. Looking at this finished model amazes me to think a plane looking like this actually could fly. Here are the pictures. Funny how the yellow looks more orange with different lighting and against a blue background without changing the camera settings. Regards Toby Edited October 4 by Planebuilder62 typo 11
modelling minion Posted October 4 Posted October 4 What a fantastic result on a truly unique looking aircraft. You have done great work here and I can imagine those prop tips were very tricky to paint but they help to make the build even more colourful. Thanks for having taken part in the GB Toby and very well done on creating such a fantastic model. 1
81-er Posted October 4 Posted October 4 That's a really lovely build, Toby, well done there Both the Vought Pancakes amaze me with their unusual plan form, but I love the look of them both. Thank you for joining us in the GB with your one James 1
Andwil Posted October 6 Posted October 6 That is a superb representation of wood on those propellers. 👏 AW 1
Dave Klaatu Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Well done! It looks really good! I have both of the pancake planes, I need to get around and build them.
