Beard Posted September 4 Posted September 4 (edited) I think I signed-up for this Group Build, if I didn't it seems like too good an opportunity to build some of my ever growing F-4 stash. Digging through I find I only have two Spey versions (although I'm very tempted to add a Hobby 2000 re-issue to my current order with the big H). Anyway, here's what I'm going to butcher... And just to prove it's below the 25% rule... And some goodies... I'm currently doing a couple of Hurricanes in that GB, a Hasegawa F-4S, and a Hasegawa A-1J so this may take a while. Thanks for looking. Edited September 6 by Beard to correct spelling. 9
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted September 4 Posted September 4 Welcome to the build Beard. Im not used to the Fujimi kit, should follow as I always like these older kits. 1
Beard Posted September 6 Author Posted September 6 Quite a lot of progress, because I'm resisting the temptation to try to add too much detail (see my F-4S build, to see what I mean). Thanks Fujimi, of all the places to attach the fin... Note, I've started to paint the front wheel well. Painted the cockpit, after adding some spurious cabling, using Humbrol 165 (which was to hand and will do) and added some of the etched bits... I couldn't bring myself to file off all of the detail on the instrument panels and, after trying the decals Fujimi provide (and discovering that they'd never settle over the raised detail), painted them... Since that photo was taken, I've joined the fuselage halves and put the cockpit in place, but didn't take a photo. I'm now deciding whether to drop the flaps (easy to do) and speed brakes (a little bit more involved) and opening up the auxiliary air intakes (fairly easy to do) or just leaving them as they are and getting the kit finished. Thanks for looking. 7
Jabba Posted September 6 Posted September 6 Nice work on the cockpit. If for flaps you mean the outer of the 2 sections, these are the ailerons and when on the ground with power off they will always droop as hyd pressure drops. 1

Thanks, I meant ailerons (Ive no idea why I wrote flaps). If I'm going to droop them then I ought to do the speed brakes, because they open when the hydraulic pressure drops. 1
Beard Posted October 6 Author Posted October 6 I've been busy with Hurricanes but there's been some progress on this one. Quite a lot of (undocumented) progress. I chose a lazy way of dealing with the lack of full-length intakes... Thanks for looking. 6
Parabat Posted October 6 Posted October 6 Nice, good to see the progress, a fair solution to the intakes. 1
Jabba Posted October 6 Posted October 6 Nice progress. It is not a lazy way of dealing with things, it is called using ones initiative. 1 1
Ray S Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Good progress on this one. Did you need to use a spreader inside to eliminate a huge gap along the wing root? Ray

Just had peek inside the fuselage... with the aid of a torch and can see that I did use a bit of sprue as a spreader. 3
Beard Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 I've been busy with life things but have made some progress. The camouflage has been painted, although it'll need another coat or two (more so since I discovered that I hadn't properly dealt with the seam between the fuselage and the intakes) and I've started painting the exhaust area. A coat of Humbrol 201 followed by a heavy dry-brushing of Metalcote 27004. I'll do some more dry-brushing with Metalcote 27001, 27002 and 27003. I'll probably use some watercolour pencils for the heat staining (is that the right word?), then some poster paint to replicate the soot. 3
Beard Posted October 25 Author Posted October 25 I've been fiddling around with watercolour pencils, trying to replicate the heat staining. Thanks for looking. 4
Beard Posted Wednesday at 11:33 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 11:33 AM Just to prove I havent forgotten about this one... Ready for the decals, after a few coats of gloss varnish. Thanks for looking. 2
Beard Posted Wednesday at 08:23 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 08:23 PM I think there's a slight problem with the roundels... Luckily, I have some spares. Why do Hannants never give you enough of the most common roundels?
