The Spadgent Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Hello chums. Welcome to my latest build. “WONGA BONGA” Said Ced. 🐪 1/32 Sopwith F.1 Camel “Clerget” by Wing nut Wings. This build comes about because of the kindness, sharing and friendship of the wonderful human beings that frequent our beautiful modelling site. “BritModeller” A few months ago I had my eye on a WnW sopwith camel kit on the Bay. I had always fancied building one of these wonderful kits but the price point always sent me off with my tail between my legs. This particular one was on offer at roughly double the original price, but still not as bad as I had seen them. I got in touch with a few of my close BM buddies and asked a few questions on whether they considered the WnW kits in high regard. The answer was a resounding yes but they are pretty pricy. Our very own @CedB got in touch privately after admitting he had the very same kit in his stash and offered it up for what he had paid. (Half of the auction cost) After much too and fro “you sure?” “Don’t be silly” etc. we decided to do the deed and to hand over plastic when we met up with a bunch of the lads at the West Midlands Aircraft Museum earlier this year. A lovely day was had and much swapping of items occurred. Someone even got a rather large Lancaster I believe. 🙉🙈🙊 Anyway upon handing over the kit, a wooden jig, colour coats paint, rigging wire, PE buckles and eyelets. Mr B proclaimed that he wouldn’t be taking any payment and hoped I enjoyed making the kit. I obviously protested but he wouldn’t have any of it. So away I went with a fat slice of kindness in the shape of a rather nice WWI fighter. Now I have pretty much caught up all my builds I can start the wonder that is this kit. So dedicated to the kindness of one : Mr Cedric Bufton. I hopefully won’t make a right pigs ear of a really rather special model. Bench cleared in ritual fashion and box sat on a clean cutting mat. I hope you’ll join me in an exciting journey. Thanks for looking in and as always. Happy modelling. Johnny. 🐪 28 11 2
RossFMJ Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Wow, how generous of Mr CedBjolly kind of that man. I look forward to this build as I also like the look of these kits but would not pay the current asking prices. I remember that meeting, not from being there but due to all the dodgy arms-deals going on in the car park. Now get on with the paint and glue 1 7 1

The Spadgent Posted August 28 Author Posted August 28 Ok then then. Then ok. Ok then. Then . Well then…. Let’s go!!! the lovely box art depicting the airframe that I shall endeavour not to c*ck up. Inside is full. Not necessarily with sprues/trees but also other goodies. A handy rigging guide from a magazine supplied by @CedB Along with these!! I have never used colour coats but I’ll see what happens. The trees are thus. And are beautifully moulded. One more and the clear bits. Tonnes of decals and some PE belts. The instructions look really comprehensive. This is going to be fun! I bought some AM linen decals suggested by @Sandbagger And picket this up at the museum. Who doesn’t love a windsock data file. So onwards and upwards. the first few bits were snipped cleaned and dry fitted. Although the walls are wonderfully moulded I’m really surprised by the amount of pin marks. 🤔 nothing a spot of CA won’t fix. More bits chopped and cleaned. The other wall and a bit of a dry fit looks to be flipping ace!!! the struts are moulded in so no chance of them not fitting the top wing. (Famous last words🤞) I held the IP in place for effect. The next few parts involve the wicker seat and fuel tank. I'm going to get all those bits sorted before paint. Feels like slipping on a big comfy cable knit sweater and an open fire building this. just needs this. more soon!!!! Thanks for tagging along and as always. Happy modelling. Johnny. 32 1
hendie Posted August 28 Posted August 28 I'll just take this here seat if you don't mind. What a wonderful gift, and what a wonderful gesture by Mr. Ced. I've got my beer and dried cuttlefish at the ready. Carry on. 3 1 1
Keeff Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Wow! What a wonderfully kind gent @CedB is .... a true act of kindness if ever I read about one! 🫡 Now, as for the build, it would be very remiss of me if I didn't pull up my seat (comfy one as we could be here a while!), a large brew and an even larger bag of snacks and watch this one unfold, enjoy some fun and some handy tips It's a very nice looking kit .... and progress so far shows some good quality. I'm sure you'll master those paints too Johnny! 😉 Keith ☺️ 1 2
RossFMJ Posted August 28 Posted August 28 You just carry on enjoying what looks like a great build whilst we nibble away over here . I'll need a longer straw to snaffle some of your pint 🥤. 1 3
AdrianMF Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Looks like a fun project! I recently picked up a couple of Roden 1/72 Camels on the 'bay and they have enough parts to scare me! Regards, Adrian 1 1
giemme Posted August 28 Posted August 28 I'm so in for this build! Not enough praise can be said of @CedB, and I talk from first hand experience! The Camel is such an iconic airplane, and even if I'm not into biplanes, I'm very eager to see how this develops - with your skills and the great quality of the kit, it'll be a show stopper! Ciao 3 2 2
81-er Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Nice to see this one getting built mate Now what do we think the chances of getting Ced to build that Lancaster next are? James 6
Whofan Posted August 29 Posted August 29 This looks like it could be a build to follow, so if you don't mind I'll just squeeze in here - ah, I'm in! 1
silverfox63 Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Not usually my thing, but seeing as it is a @The Spadgent build of a very generous @CedB donation, I'm in. Cheers, Chris. 2 1
Quiet Mike Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Fantastic! Looking forward to this build. A WNW kit has been on my wish list for several years now, unfortunatly my interest in early aviation modelling coincided with WNW folding 😪 1 1
perdu Posted August 29 Posted August 29 When Ced gives Johnny thrives and we WIN. With you all the way kidda. 3 1 1 3 1
Gene K Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Looking forward to this MasterWork. Could you share who the folks are (by name) are in the group picture? Looks like a fine group of friends. Gene K 1
Doccur Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Pulling up a chair for this one. Have a few of these in my stash but not enough courage to start one! Ash 1

Another version of the photo exists with Johnny in it, I think possibly taken by Terry? Either way, a thoroughly great bunch of folks James 3 1 1 3
malpaso Posted August 30 Posted August 30 In response to club mates queries about the cabane struts health (several WNW Camels having preceded my effort), my response was always “fine, thanks”. Until they inevitably snagged on something! TBH it was probably hubris for my calling them out on multiple WNWs that it was just like assembling Lego. Apart from the inevitable complexity of a biplane, I found the WNW some of the easiest modelling ever done, as everything fits perfectly. Enjoy the build. 1 1
Terry1954 Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Aha, I was wondering when we would see this one Johnny. It is indeed a wonderful kit, and thanks to Ced's generosity, we get to see you build it. Very much looking forward to that. 9 hours ago, 81-er said: Another version of the photo exists with Johnny in it, I think possibly taken by Terry? Either way, a thoroughly great bunch of folks Correct James, and for the record, Johnny's build thread should have that picture in it I think, so there you go, the main man being in the loud fashionable red shirt .............. I heard a rumour that there was a third version of this picture taken when all parties decided to dress as clowns, but no one will admit to having the original 🤡 And of course, what is not possible to show, is Giorgio @giemme dialled in from Italy. And as for this............... On 29/08/2025 at 09:47, 81-er said: Now what do we think the chances of getting Ced to build that Lancaster next are? ............. that's a very good question James! Carry on Johnny, we are all waiting with bated breath. T 7 1 2

CedB Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Good to see this one started Johnny and, of course, following along. It has been sat in my stash waiting for my skills to be up to the job. Sadly that, IMHO, has yet to happen so I was happy to hand it over to a worthy modeller. I'm sure you'll make a wonderful job of it - much easier than some of the kits you've mastered recently! I should have passed on some of my Colourcoats love… Here's a video by Jamie on their best use: There's a full playlist too here: As you'll see he recommends their own thinners; if you use this any spare paint can be put back in the tin. Now available from here. Clean up with white spirit. I've bought a big bottle of the odourless stuff. I think you'll like them, I certainly do 4 1 1
Hamden Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Looking forward to watching the magic happen with this one, I'll just squeeze in at the back and watch quietly if I may? Roger 1
Trumpton_Orbital Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Can I squeeze in at the back too please? I've got a real soft spot for the Camel! Kind regards, Paul. 1
