Much has been rightly said about how diverse Tamiya's offerings have been over the years, but ever the contrarian that got me thinking about what they haven't done? AndEven though they've done dinosaurs, I think there's some gaps:

  1. Civil Aviation- a big omission for me, but I can't track down anything
    1. No airliners
    2. No General Aviation😭
  2. Civilan Shipping- again they seem to steer clear of it
    1. No merchant shipping- excluding naval supply vessels.
    2. No passenger vessels
    3. NO Floating Gin Palaces aka cruise ships
  3. No Manga- this one doesn't bother me, but I'd have thought a huge domestic market
  4. Likewise no film or TV tie-ins

Have I missed something that they have done in these genres? Likewise, is there other genres that aren't in their range?

You can see where I' going with this:evil_laugh:

I was about to suggest spacecraft but then have a vague and possibly false memory of seeing a Space Shuttle in one of their previous catalogues :hmmm:

I feel a rabbit hole, or would this be a black hole coming on? Unless the all knowing GB brain (henceforth to be called Marvin the Paranoid Android) can help?

I did a Google

1/100th scale Space Shuttle Atlantis, item number 60402, sometimes my memory does work! :yahoo:

*Edit* still currently available for £44.99 from Wonderland Models as well. Should any of you be tempted...

I don't think they've ever done any classic American muscle cars. They do a couple of modern Fords, but maybe they've never done any other American cars?

Oh no it's the muscle car question again😱. Yes, the car offerings are err eclectic? I think there are themes in them? Basically Japanese! But some classic like the Toyoda and some more muscular (that's as close to the muscle car phrase as I dare go) like your Datsun

That’s what’s always been great, and I guess this actually applies to a good number of manufacturers, you get performance vehicles and also really, really bog standard, basic stuff! Tamiya have always covered a fair number of European manufacturers, too.

Not withstanding my dislike of people, I like those-especially the guy with the Mother of All Mallets- bet they're a whole sight easier than a MiniArt version.

There's one airliner - a 1/100 Embraer 175 in FDA livery. It looks like it was originally issued as a promo, then as a regular kit.

Does a helicopter count as general aviation?

For manga/anime, there's a 1/700 scale aircraft carrier

Media tie-ins? One from Gerry Anderson

I'm already slated for 3 in this GB, but I seem to have caught the Enzo contagion and NEED one of these- hen's teeth time.

EDIT Actually cheaper than the Space Shuttle- let's see how the first three builds go though.

Select your markings (be a tech-bro) and it does, or commercial aviation for pop-stars and footballers!

Yes, the lack of general aviation is a big one for nearly all manufacturers. I'd snap up a Tamiya 1/35 Piper Warrior. Of course, it's not as exciting as an F-16, which is why we'll probably never see one.

Likewise, their 1/12 bike kit range has plenty of exotic racers, but almost nothing mere mortals have actually ridden.

Other than a few such as the Yamaha R1 and LC250/350 and the Honda CB750 they certainly like the exotic stuff.

1/35 M56 Scorpion would be nice and would fit in the range well.

Yes, there were one or two..There was a time in the 1980s when I built the Tamiya Honda VT250F and had a real one in my parents' garage. That was the only time my model and realworld biking ever coalesced! 😀

Not a cheap solution, but this DXM set helps fill that void: https://dxmdecals.com/shopping/ols/products/148-f-14b-late-version-3d-printed-conversion-set

if we’re being picky the 1/48 Phantom range is missing a few models too… 🤞

Aye, I've bought extra sprues from the late A and D model Tomcat to make a B, but I hope they release a dedicated B. And that they do the Phantom range as well.

I don't remember any world war 1 aircraft,  or is that a bit to specific.

Or WW1 tanks?

To broaden it out further, they're thin (to non-existent) on Pre WW2 in general
