A tale of two propellers, chapter two.  I had already painted up the kit prop when I realised that my subject, V7795, had a De Havilland  propeller and the kit offering was a Rotol.  A rummage through the spares box yielded a suitable spinner and some blades that are about the right size.  I had to make a backing plate from plastic card and ended up with a passable replacement prop.

I have also been trying to decide on the colours for this aircraft, I have researched the spaghetti camouflage :worms: and am satisfied that it was aluminium with squiggles of darker colours, I am leaning toward dark green and maybe brown.  I am undecided however on the underside, whether Sky  Blue or Sky Type S.  Would a plane destined for Greece be more likely to have Sky Blue?  I am  currently leaning toward Sky Type S, for no other reason than I have that paint and don’t have Sky Blue.  So unless someone can tell me otherwise that’s what I’ll go with.

Thanks for looking

Sorry Andy, I’m no help with the underside colour although a quick goggle will show up plenty of Corgi examples where they depict their model with a ‘blue’ underside. Might need to delve a little deeper or just take an educated punt and go with Sky.

More than. Very nicely done.

Good luck with the worms! Whatever you decide I’m looking forward to seeing the paint go down.

Sky it is then:

I could not find anything to justify me going out and buying a bottle of sky blue paint.

Thanks for looking.

Moving on to the dark green, I masked off the dark earth areas using @Rabbit Leader’s method of laying masking tape stuck onto clear plastic over a scale plan and tracing the pattern, then cutting out the masks, which gave me this:

Thanks for the tip Dave, much easier than the worms and squares of tape method!

I then sprayed the green:

I’ll leave that to cure overnight before removing the masks.

Thanks for looking.

Great progress with the old kit!

One of the theories is that some US service personnel came up from Woomera with a grader and some high tech GPS system, but it’s not really an image you would expect them to make.  It’s also a long way away off the road so I don’t know how you get there to do it.

Nice to see you giving this method a go Andy. It’s quite effective for hard edged camouflage patterns (which I personally prefer for 1/72 aircraft) but not as effective if you want that sprayed soft edged effect. Horses for courses I suppose.

It’s a great technique, isn’t it. I’ve already applied it myself on a smaller scale on my 1/72 build. Looks like the paint has gone down beautifully, and I’m looking forward to the great unmasking!

Today I very carefully peeled the masking off, with some trepidation as Inoften get bleeding or overspray:

all went very well until the very last piece, which lifted not only the paint, but the primer as well.  Otherwise only a little bit of green bled on the nose so overall I’m happy with the outcome.  I also glued on the tailplanes, which required a little filler.

After lunch I fixed up the problem areas:

Next up will be the spaghetti camouflage on the nose and leading edge.

Thanks for looking.

Great work AW. What also helps with this method is some large  super sharp scissors and a steady hand. If you’re able to cut the pattern as neatly as possible in one scissor cut, the cleaner your camo mask will be. Keep rotating the tape / plastic whilst keeping the scissors straight, it takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s a bit of fun and you’ll feel like your back doing Grade 3 arts and crafts all over again!

Shame about the paint and primer lifting, but that can be down to almost anything. Good recovery in the end but.

Cheers.. Dave

Nice going with this Andrew & a good recovery on that paint lifting, the down side with acrylics I guess. Very much looking forward to seeing this come to fruition, not long to wait by the look of it. :)

Some aluminium laid down as the base for the spaghetti camouflage:

Spaghetti camouflage brush painted with more or less random squiggles of dark green and a reddish brown.  I have also painted the exhausts but am not happy with them and will repaint.  I used my usual technique of a metallic base coat followed by dry brushed rust and light grey, only I used a lighter colour (Vallejo oily steel) rather than gun metal and they have turned out too pale.

Since the last update I have glossed the Hurricane in preparation for:

decals!

I used roundels from the DK sheet I purchased for my Hurricane IIC and cobbled the serials together from this sheet and spares.

Thanks for looking.

🤣🤣

The decals have gone down very nicely by the look of it, but that’s no surprise if they’re DK decals.

This is a terrific looking build, AW!

Finished but for the navigation lights and some small touch ups, I’ll get these done tomorrow hopefully then it’ll be off to the gallery.

I did some light chipping with a silver pencil and some exhaust staining.

Thanks for looking.
