SnøMotion Posted September 9 Author Posted September 9 Right, first things first. A 'spoonparison' of ProScale Nissan Midnight Purple (left) and the same with some SMS Pearl Magenta Rose tint over the top. Now I have clear on the MP, there's very little difference. I was stupid with my initial test spoons; I should have sprayed two black base spoons and then only added the SMS PMR to one. What I did was spray MP and PMR onto a grey base and a black base. If I'd seen the Midnight Purple on its own, I'd have gone with that... which would have saved me from this... I think the colour will work really well at this scale, so it doesn't just look black, but the SMS Pearl Magenta Rose left a slightly 'spikey' surface. This caused no issues when I cleared the spoon, but on the car, there are some very lumpy areas! My plan is to add more clear to the worst areas, in the hope that I'll have loads of material to polish into. It's such a shame because, at the Midnight Purple stage, this was the smoothest paint job I have achieved to date! Anyway, I'll add a bit more clear and then leave it until October. In other news, with the exception of fitting the wheels and back box, I'm at step 7 of 14 in the instructions! The intercooler has a black wash, but I'm not sure you can really see the 'detail' of the suspension struts! The main strut bodies are Titanium Silver, the inner strut (visible through the springs) is Aluminium Sliver and the springs are Gloss Black. I should have gone for something with more gold than the Titanium Silver, like the rear sections of the exhaust where I used a 50:50 mix of Titanium Silver and BBS Wheel Gold. Next stop is the interior... which I might do in dark grey and purple... Thanks again for looking, comments welcome! Martin 15
Col. Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Half way through the instruction sheet steps and looking great Martin 1
SnøMotion Posted September 9 Author Posted September 9 Thanks, @Col.! I’ve just found some interesting “carpet” fabric that should arrive at the weekend… Martin
SnøMotion Posted September 10 Author Posted September 10 Thought I'd do a quick mock-up and see how things are looking... I'd deliberately modelled a little rake into the stance, as the R34 I lowered was slightly low to the rear. It appears this wouldn't have been but, with all the camber, I actually like it! I could have poked the wheels out an extra 1mm without and worries, but there's a nastiness to this stance that I think suits the thuggish appearance of the R33 perfectly. I think there's every possibility that I'll build this kit again with the front slightly higher and a bit more poke. Thanks for looking! Martin 12
Keeff Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Now that looks good ..... great colour, great stance, but looking like someone's taken a liking to the shiny bits! Keith ☺️ 1

FG2Si Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Thr change in stance has really improved the look of the car. Interesting to see the change in paint with the different coloured primer. To think these cars were so cheap to buy in the early 2000's and now they ask silly money. Carl 1 1

They were never cheap enough for me in the UK (especially the UK spec cars), but they have certainly shot up in price since! Although the R32 is my favourite Skyline body shape, the R33 does always appeal to me. Martin
Col. Posted September 10 Posted September 10 At first glance that could pass for a real life upgrade project that's rolled out of the paintshop and into the workshop for fitting out. 1
HarryHobbyin Posted September 10 Posted September 10 (edited) The Car is looking awesome. i know some autobody painters heat up the the clear coat paint then spray it too get a better flow too minimize orange peal. A recommended temperature is around 70-80°F (21-27°C). I've also seen a car scale modeller on Youtube also do that with good results. I don't remember the clear paint or thinner used tho. I've personally have never attempted heating paint and also i do have a hard time spraying clears myself so i admit i'm no clear coat guy. Anywho if thinking of heating paint do tests and quick research before attempting it on the model. The Wheels and Paint color look killer....Very nice work so far. -HH Edited September 10 by HarryHobbyin 1

This is a 2K clear that I've always had good result with, even in single digit Celsius conditions. I think there are two problems: 1, the texture of the paint underneath and 2, I added more thinner than usual, in the hope it would flow better in the higher 'summer' temperatures. I've also just cleared a Porsche 356 and had similar problems. I also used more thinner on that. The next body I clear, I'll make sure to use less thinner and see if it works out Applying heat to the paint sounds terrifying! Maybe as a last resort! Martin 1

Rob Sutto Posted September 13 Posted September 13 Just been catching up, wonderful work as always, Martin. Shame about the primer mix-up – that's something I'm still trying to get my head around, it's surprising what a difference a particular base coat can make. 1

Shame about the primer mix-up – that's something I'm still trying to get my head around, it's surprising what a difference a particular base coat can make. Thanks, Rob! The primer and colour went down beautifully, the best I’ve managed, it was the SMS pearl coat that I sprayed over the colour that mucked everything up. It was really, for want of a better word, spikey! I didn’t try and smooth it, because it had covered fine on the spoon, and I didn’t want to upset the consistency of the colour. I’m almost ready to put colour on my Range Rover, so I’m hoping that will be my redemption paint job! And, yes, it’s definitely worth spraying some spoons with different primer colours. I batch sprayed white, grey, pink and black spoons, so it’s easier to just throw some colour on different ones. Now, when I’m priming something, I just top up the spoons in that colour. Martin 1
SnøMotion Posted September 15 Author Posted September 15 I've been concentrating on getting the interior painted over the last few days... The majority of it is ProScale Black Grey Leather with some black bits around the instruments and controls. Then I made a concoction of Porsche Ultraviolet and Ferrari Rosso Scuderia and used that for the centre panels of the seats. This looked very 'red' when I first mixed it, so I added some more Ultraviolet. But, when I sprayed it, it came out pretty 'blue', which was annoying. But it's okay. I'd got some purple faux suede off Amazon, with the intention of using it for carpets, and it matches the body colour perfectly! Unfortunately, it doesn't work so well with this colour I've mixed on the inside, so I'll save it, incase I build this again. I just need to stick the instrument decal on, add some clear UV resin, and then I can stick the interior together. There are some big gaps at either end of the dash, and I think I may need to warm the tub up and close these. Lastly, I finished the back box and got that stuck in place! And that's it for now... Thanks again for looking, reacting and commenting! Martin 9
Keeff Posted September 15 Posted September 15 The interior ..... lovely! A nice colour contrast too. Underneath is equally as good .... I like that huuuuuge back box ..... I can imagine the growl that would make! Keith ☺️

I did the seats, floor and parcel shelf with Tamiya Matte Clear and everything else with Tamiya Semi-Gloss Clear. I was hoping the matte would be… matte, but it’s more like leather. Martin 1 1
81-er Posted September 22 Posted September 22 It's been a while since I last checked in here and things have really progressed! I think the colour, stance, and all of the details underneath look amazing, and I'm hoping the paint is savable I rather like the interior colour too James 1 1

I’m thinking I might re-model the wheels with an extra 1mm of offset, just so they fill the arches better. This set will probably work well on something else. I pretty much finished the interior before coming on holiday, but didn’t manage to get any photos. I’m back at the weekend and hope to get stuck into the paint and get some interior shots up Martin
ToE1984 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Hi Martin, the purple looks great and I love the thuggish look! The interior also looks good and I really like the "NISMO" logo on the cooler! Very nice finish on the back box as well! Cheers Thomas 1
