glwanabe Posted August 19 Author Posted August 19 Little bit of progress today. The kit supplied spark plug harness is terrible. Made my own with a piece of plastic dowel and some brass wire. Not thrilled with the IP, so I have an Airscale panel coming. Los of other work to do till I get the new panel. 9
Wings unlevel Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Excellent work with the engine. It looks suitably worn and used. 1
glwanabe Posted August 20 Author Posted August 20 (edited) Quick test fit of the major assemblies. Actually goes together fairly easy without any drama. Need to clean up some sloppy detail work, and get it sorted better. Fusalage will be set aside till the new IP arrives. Going to start on wing assemblies, and see what I can get done before we leave next Tuesday for North Carolina. A lot of the engine compartment is hidden, just like the fuel tank. Sure looks like it. 11 minutes ago, glwanabe said: A lot of the engine compartment is hidden, just like the fuel tank. A shame much of that lovely detail won’t see the light of day! Also, how frighteningly close is that fuel tank to the pilot seat. No wonder so many Hurricane pilot got badly burned. 😱 1

The cockpit assy on this has some very tiny pieces to try and fit. Several of them are lost to the old God's as tribute. Even with micro tweezers they were nearly impossible to hold onto. 2

Many’s the time I’ve been on my hands and needs on the floor vainly searching for tweezer escapees, wondering just why I do this hobby! 😂 2 1
glwanabe Posted August 21 Author Posted August 21 (edited) It's grey primer bath day for the exterior surfaces. Rivet detail looks good. Hit the exhaust last evening. They look decent on the engine. Prop assembled with black rubber base coat. Added some detailing to the port side cockpit rail. The throttle is a couple pieces of sprue that are replacing the original part that was sacrificed to the floor gods. My Wife, and the dog have seen me more than once on hands and knees doing a Velma looking for her glasses impression as I search for pieces. Where did that part go!! ??? Good thing we do this hobby for fun! 😂 But the scratched throttle, and the whole cockpit, looks terrific. 1 1

Thanks Brother. I did some detailing on it, and I'm getting happier with how it's looking. Worked on more sub assemblies this afternoon, and parts of the wing. Will get some pi s shortly, Wife needs food and I'm the chef. 2
wimbledon99 Posted August 22 Posted August 22 I’ve never struck up the courage to go to 1:24 so will be watching with interest. Looks lovely so far! 1

Nothing to it, pieces are bigger, and tends to be a few more of them. Based on the work of yours I've seen, no courage needed. In some ways I find them easier to work on. I looked for bargains for the kits I have currently. I found this current build through Walmart online for 60.00 USD The Airfix kit was on-sale for 68.00 USD. The newer Airfix Spitfire is a bit of a beast at nearly 500 pieces. I see it as an opportunity to excel. Jump in, the waters fine. 3
glwanabe Posted August 24 Author Posted August 24 (edited) Royal mail, US Customs, and USPS say that I'll get my Airscale package Wednesday. So it will be waiting for me when we get back from Charlotte Next Sunday. Once I'm happy with the cockpit the fusalage will go together, and I have many parts ready to go on. The wing is basically built at this point. I'll get a few more sub assemblies built today. I decided to leave out a few parts that would never see the light of day after install. Wing fuel tanks, and oil tank were not installed. The MG, and Underwing 40mm cannon could have been much simpler as well. There's hardly any detail to build into them. We'll concentrate on exterior paint when the time comes. Lower wing armament bay half. Upper wing half. These two mate up. Nothing special. The cannons could just be the barrel with the pod, and the cannister for the shells. I'll get the barrels detailed a bit better. See about drilling the cannon bores out. These aren't glued yet, just fitted, they fit well. Edited August 24 by glwanabe 8
glwanabe Posted August 24 Author Posted August 24 (edited) Couple more shots of yesterday's build session. Landing gear bay, with a couple of pieces that can go in at this point. Flaps and aileron panels installed The wing needed to be glued in sections and reapplied a few times. This section will need to be hit again and pinned till it sets. The landing light area will get detailed out with some aluminum tape The armaments bay with the cannon pod shell canister. Not much to look at. I might clean it up a little more Prop assy can be finished at this point. Tailwhell, not pictured, can be built. Canopy can be worked as well, but I'm only gonna get so much done before we leave. Little girl only got about 15 hours sleep yesterday and then got me up at 330am this morning. Now it's my turn for a nap. Edited August 24 by glwanabe 11
glwanabe Posted August 24 Author Posted August 24 Next fit check, and we are looking ok. Of course I knocked the throttle piece off, but hey, it happens. I will say, the parts fit in this kit is pretty good. Still have some work to get the horizontal stab to fit better. Some basic sanding should do the trick. Might get a bit of minor work done tomorrow, but probably last update till next week. Packing and house prep tomorrow. Then it's full on Grandpa duties for miss Lily. 10
wimbledon99 Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Wow, that’s looking good. It’s gonna need a lot of paint 😮 1 1
Wings unlevel Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Despite its size and complexity it really is going together nicely - some deft work here. 6 hours ago, glwanabe said: armaments bay with the cannon pod shell canister. Really shows how thick the Hurricane’s wing was, and how it was put to good use! 6 hours ago, glwanabe said: Little girl only got about 15 hours sleep yesterday and then got me up at 330am this morning. It really helped to have spent all this year working on the Airfix Mark I, and getting a feel for this again. With the Airfix kit I took a lot of time. With this kit I have jumped in with both feet and just going for it full speed. Looking at some engineering specs for the modified Clark y airfoil on the Hurricane. It works out that the wing was 18 to 19% thickness to chord ratio depending on which wing version. At any rate it works out to approx 18 inches thick or about 45.72 cm. Don't be fooled by Luna's pathetic attempt to feign mistreatment. Little girl gets more spa days than I do. 🤣 4
glwanabe Posted August 31 Author Posted August 31 We are back from visiting our youngest Daughter, Son in law, and of course the Birthday granddaughter. Airscale products are on the bench to continue the build. Should get a bit of work done tomorrow. 3
glwanabe Posted September 1 Author Posted September 1 5 hours ago, Wings unlevel said: Your granddaughter’s loss is our gain. 😂 Daughter said she was looking for us after her nap yesterday. We did a video call this morning. Absolutely no loss on her end. She is buried with Birthday gifts from a party Saturday and this morning. Good to be home!! I watched a bit of vids last week about painting and getting some better realism in my build. Let's see if I can transition that into this build. 2 1
glwanabe Posted September 1 Author Posted September 1 (edited) New panel is coming along. Wasn't really designed for this kit, but fits well enough Need to get it glued together, 3 pieces here. This will work. Edited September 2 by glwanabe 7
wimbledon99 Posted September 2 Posted September 2 That panel (and the whole cockpit) looks great from here! 1 1

Thank you kind Sirs. Just a little more touchup and the fusalage will be ready to close up. 2
glwanabe Posted September 3 Author Posted September 3 Used a little bit of black panel line on a few pieces for some contrast. Moved the throttle piece so it wasn't hitting the other handle. Needed to do a bit of sanding on the side shelf parts as well as some shaping on the tank and panel pieces. It was just a bit too tight to close how I wanted it to. It's together now and I think just very minor seam filler will be needed for a sealess look. I can live with this. I opted to leave the seat belts out. Still learning to work with the brass. 1st time building out a panel. Next one should come out a bit better. 8
