Jabba Posted August 6 Author Posted August 6 Thank you both for your advise. I have primed the Buccaneer and all looks well. I have also started to paint the aircrew, build the fuel tanks and Sky shadow pod on the Tornado. I did start to put the paint masks on the fuselage windows on the VC-10, but only did 2 that night (an end of the night thing). It was not until I got downstairs that I realised that applied the masks to the windows that actually need to be painted (Doh). So it was lucky that I stopped when I did and will restart tonight. 7
Jabba Posted August 9 Author Posted August 9 I sprayed the VC-10 with primer last night. During the masking of the fuselage window I found that not all of the window stripes had glued right next to the fusleage. I have a plan in that I will fill these windows with Krystal Klear, before painting with the ones that will be painted over, and after for the ones that were masked. I have also shown a photo of all 3 aircraft in the relative positions that they will end up in. Does anyone know if these are correct or not? I know that the refuelling aircraft will roughly be in line with the wing pods, but are they back far enough? I have also made up the Tronado fuel tanks and Sky Shadow pod, plus I have fashioned a Pave Spike of sorts from the TIALD pod that was in the Dragon kit (very much some poetic liecence here). I have been busy painting the aircrews and getting the cockpits sorted. 8
Jabba Posted August 10 Author Posted August 10 The aircrew have now been painted. The Bucc crew are in the sandy grow bags, whilst the Tornado ones are in green. I have done it this way as that is what I found in most of the photos of the aircrew that I saw. 5
Jabba Posted August 12 Author Posted August 12 I have got the crew members fitted to the Tornado. But this way after much chopping of limbs, cutting of back and backside, seat cushions, seat bottom and a scrape of the bonedome. Not perfect but it will do. The Buccaneer appears to be a different prospect after looking at the seat and pilot, such a difference in size. I will look first at how the seat fits into the cockpit, as it does appear to be a bit on the small side and the nsee what I may have available in the stash. Perhaps @AdrianMF was right when he said just stick a small blob of something in the cockpit to represent the crew. On a plus point I have started to paint the under sides of the VC-10, Although both Roden and F-dcal say that it is a light brown rather than Lt Grey. 7
Jabba Posted August 15 Author Posted August 15 Crew now fitted to the Buccaneer. I found a Dragon F-14 kit with the crew in it fitted to their seats. Although it was 1/144 scale I still had to remove a lot of plastic so that they could fit. Canopy to be fitted tonight 8
Jabba Posted August 21 Author Posted August 21 Some "Pink" paint applied to the Buccaneer and Tornado. I have painted the Tornado slightly lighter than the Bucc due to its length in theatre. Now some detail painting. The VC-10 is slowly having Hemp applied. 8
Jabba Posted August 23 Author Posted August 23 The Hemp on the VC-10 has now been painted. I have decided to make this arcraft as ZA150 (J). There is a reason behind this because in 1986 whilst on detachmant to Cyprus this aircraft was there on the same operating area as our aircraft. I had some zaps, so a friend and I decided we would apply one to this aircraft, but where. We decided that the safest palce so that it did not get sucked down an engine was on the engine itself. So we took the large passenger steps from the front of the aircraft around to the engine and placed the zap in the middle of the 0 of the Ser No. We did think about doing the other side, but as it was such an effort to move the steps we thought that puttng them back where we got them from was the better option. I have also found some photos of this aircraft on dstorm which show some repainting, which I think is the bottom parts as it looks more like a fresh coat has been applied rather than the faded top parts. Anyway it does make it e bit more interesting. 9
Jabba Posted August 26 Author Posted August 26 Detail painting done on the Buccaneer and Tornado. Gloss varnish to be applied. 8
Jabba Posted August 27 Author Posted August 27 The different colour of Hemp along the top of the fuselage done, now to do some detail painting. Yet again some peotic lience has been taken with Stbd side of the fuselage as I only have proper photos of the Port side. Last night I started to apply some Klear on the Tornado, when I noticed there was some black in it after covering the nose cone. I had used a paint pen to do this and the other black bits on the tail and somehow this paint was coming off and mixing with the Klear. Luckily I has a few cotton buds hany and was able to wipe the klear off the model. I reapplied the Klear but avoided the nose cone, I will paint these areas with proper paint and try again. The paint from the pen had been on there for several days so I thought that it would have been dry by now. Has anyone else had this problem? 8
Jabba Posted August 30 Author Posted August 30 Thank you very much. I have applied the decals to the Buccaneer and Tornado. Some were a bit hairy to put on as they either did not want to move when fitted or just curled up into a none existant blob and that was with some washing up liquid in the water that I used. I do think that the nose art is slightly too big, but they are the only ones around. Now to weather these. 6
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted September 4 Posted September 4 These are looking great Jabba. The paint is looking schmick! I have a part started VC-10 in one of my Tubs of Doom, I should find it and finish it off.
Jabba Posted September 8 Author Posted September 8 The majority of the decals have now been fitted to the VC-10. I will have to use the kit decals for the wing walkways. I have never used Roden decals before, are they alright or do they require some sort of stuff applying to them before use?

Yes Devine intervention…. They look nice but will probably disintegrate on contact with water. I’d probably given er m s cost of microsol liquid decals first. Either way when applying them use warm water with a little washing up liquid and let them soak for a very long time. Then position the decal and backing as close to the final position as possible assuming using a large soft brush gently coax them into position. In their defence I managed to loose about half the decals on my DH4a and emailed Roden’s customer service and they actually sent me a replacement set free of charge so ten out of ten for customer service.
Jabba Posted September 8 Author Posted September 8 Thank you very much for that. I will coat the parts that I am going to use tonight, let them dry overnight and then see what happens. I do think that I have a spare few that I can trial before going for the main event.
Marklo Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Just realised this was Roden too and yes the lozenge and lozenge tapes are decals so their decals do work I do remember it as being one of those never again builds.
Marklo Posted September 8 Posted September 8 As was this, which was a nightmare. So I’d probably try to select a few decals off the sheet that you’re not going to use and test them on a mule first.
Jabba Posted September 10 Author Posted September 10 Decalling now done on the VC-10. Ths was done with a combination of F-Dcal, Liveried Unlimited and the wing walkways from the kit (thanksfor the advice @Marklo, it was heeded and followed. I did have a few breakages, but these were minor and I was able to hopefully get the lines straight. I have also dirtied up the Bucc and Tornado. Some Klear for the VC-10 to seal the decals and then some matt varnish. 7
Jabba Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 I have started to add some bits and bobs to the Bucc and Tornado. I have also drilled the mounting holes in all 3 models. I will remove the masking from the canopies before I go any further. I have also been experimenting with what I can use for the refuelling hose. I found at work some thinnish heat shrink, which I first shrunk onto some copper wire that I have. This did not appear to be too good. Then I shrunk it without any wire in it and this appearred to be better, see 5th photo. I then found that the wire that I have and some wire that I can get from work will still fit through it so that it still has some sort of rigidity, see 6th photo. It may be a little over scale, but I think that it looks the part. Also not looking at the base to mount these on. It is a wooden base and I am not sure if I can apply some sort of scenery over it or to leave it plain. 4
Jabba Posted September 18 Author Posted September 18 Removed the masking from the VC-10 fuselage windows last night and to be honest I am not too happy with the results. I am looking at painting the windows with gloss Black. I now wish tha tI had filled in the windows and used F-dcals ones. Wing refuelling pods now fitted. 1
Marklo Posted September 18 Posted September 18 I’d be inclined to push on the glazing pieces, clean up the holes with a sharp blade and use Kristal Klear ( or equivalent) for the windows.
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted September 19 Posted September 19 What's the area between the nacelles on the lower fuselage ? Observers/fuelers station ir something else ?
Jabba Posted September 19 Author Posted September 19 That is the centre line refueling hose stowage. 1
