canberra kid Posted July 13 Posted July 13 I've found a nice drawing in the T.17 IPC. I've photographed it as it's a very big book to dismantle to scan one page! John 3 1
Lord Riot Posted July 13 Author Posted July 13 That’s excellent, thank you John! I made a start on the door from your photo but this will definitely help adding more detail. I’ve also been busy filling the trenches on the rudder. I’ll sand it down later when the filler dries. Next up, the fillet at the front of the tail fin. I used some reference photos from an old build on BM to file it down a bit. Before, with area to be removed highlighted. And after filing. Hopefully this is more accurate. 8 1 1
Lord Riot Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 I heated up a bodger and melted through the nacelles to make the vents on each side. 6
Lord Riot Posted July 15 Author Posted July 15 Nacelles sanded and tidied up. This old kit has very thick joins between sprues and parts, so quite a bit of sanding is needed on most of them. Crew door done. 7 1
corsaircorp Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Hello Sir, Great mind think alike... May I follow, is there still a seat for not so well mannered CC ?? I'm working on these 2 coinversions... Sincerely. CC 1
Lord Riot Posted July 18 Author Posted July 18 The heavy wings need superglue to fix to the fuselage. They’ll also need a lot of filler once firmly set. I think it’s a bit easier fitting them before the bomb doors so I can glue the underside join a bit more once the upper surface join is firm. 10 1
Lord Riot Posted July 19 Author Posted July 19 The gap under one of the wing joins was so wide I used two strips of plastic card as well as liquid putty to fill it up. Top side joins not quite as bad but still needed filling along the entire length on both sides. I wonder what is the likelihood of Airfix making a new tool RAF Canberra? I added a few extra instruments along the front of the cockpit. 8
Lord Riot Posted July 19 Author Posted July 19 The yellow spays on with no trouble at all. Hopefully it’ll dry smoothly, otherwise it’ll need a second coat. I’m assuming the wingtip fuel tanks were changed between airframes, so it would be possible for this aircraft to carry tanks with light aircraft grey undersides to them. I’ll check a few reference images and see if that’s realistic. 7
Lord Riot Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 Second coat of yellow, particularly under the rear fuselage. Looking smoother now. 7
Lord Riot Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 Masked up ready for the black stripes. The width of the black stripes across the wings is 12mm on the model. As they curve around the fuselage though they are wider, it can be clearly seen on photos. Hopefully that won’t look too weird when I remove the masking tape. The black and yellow are such contrasting colours that I’m fearing a fair bit of paint touch ups later, it’s hard to see if the masking tape left any gaps. I decided to spray the undersides of the tip tanks in light aircraft grey. I’ve seen quite a few examples like this. The top part of the tanks will be DSG and dark green. 6
Lord Riot Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 The big reveal! That could have been a lot worse, I’m actually really pleased with how it turned out. Not much touching up needed at all. The only real issue was the masking tape pulling up some of the interior white, but that’s an easy fix. 8 1
bigbadbadge Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Wow, this has really come on well, looks superb, great job on the paint too. Chris 1
heloman1 Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Striping is looking great, yellow is not an easy colour to spray. Well done! I built he Italeri Dak as a 'Dazzle Dak' SAAF TT. For some reason the SAAF, decided, the stripes should be of different widths! Colin 1
Lord Riot Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 Thanks for the comments and likes. It’s an enjoyable build despite the age of the kit and its foibles. I wish Airfix would release a new tool Canberra! Meanwhile, there’s nothing like a coat of spray to highlight where the filler didn’t quite fill the joins … @canberra kid, or anyone - would anyone happen to have a definitive diagram or photo of the top side camouflage pattern on a mid-80’s TT.18 please? 4

Nice work so far! Here is the Canberra paint plan from the AP it's standard but as always there would be slight veriations. John 1 3

Lord Riot Posted July 23 Author Posted July 23 I thought now was the right time to glue on the tailplanes so I could administer filler before further spraying. They’ll need another coat of grey to cover up the filled join lines. The rest of the airframe is masked up ready for green spray. 4
Lord Riot Posted July 23 Author Posted July 23 Fuel tanks sprayed, just a few minor touch ups needed plus the tiny light on the front. These are the kit tanks rather than the Alley Cat ones. Those were probably ever so slightly better but not enough to make it worth the effort of having to clean up massive seams of resin. The last major spraying done with the green. It’ll all be tidying up and detailing after this. Hopefully not too much of the former, the more one has to respect a mask little areas the worse it all starts to look. 6
Lord Riot Posted July 23 Author Posted July 23 Always one of the best parts to these is the unmasking. Luckily it had worked in the most part, with just a few small areas of touching up needed. These Canberras looked pretty scruffy and weathered generally anyway, so I’m not overly concerned if there are patches of slightly scuffed paint or a different shade, the overall effect seems ok. I’ve tidied up around the windows now and the curved camouflage demarcation at the wing roots. I’ll let it dry thoroughly over night now then tomorrow I can start the weathering. 7
