zebra Posted July 1 Posted July 1 I'm hoping to manage a few builds in this GB (famous last words!) and I think I'll start with a Boeing 727. I don't think I've built a 727 since I built the original Airfix 727-100 at least 40 years ago, so it's about time. I'll post the sprue pics later. I've got decals in the stash for a few different schemes so I'm unlikely to go for the JAT option in the box. I've got four that were designed specifically for this kit - two Braniff schemes (jellybean and flying colours), Sterling and Dan-Air - and two that weren't but will hopefully fit (American Airlines delivery scheme and Republique Populaire Du Congo). The only one I'm ruling out for now is the Congolese one, just because there's already been a build of that one on BM so I want to do something different. Plenty of time before I have to decide. cheers Julian 8 1
zebra Posted July 13 Author Posted July 13 Time to get cracking - first of all, here's the box shot: First impressions: Looks like a nice kit, the sprues and parts breakdown look a lot like many recent Ukrainian kits. I've started by dealing with the window strips - the fuselage halves have a long thin indented rectangle on each side where the windows go (you can see it in the photo above) and clear strips with the windows engraved on them go in these slots. You can either remove the plastic from the slots if you want clear windows, or put the window strips over it if you're using decals, which is what I'll be doing. Test fitting showed they sit ever so slightly proud over the fuselage, so I gave the back of each window strip a quick rub down with a 100 grit sanding sponge. After a bit of sanding to blend in the edges, this is what I ended up with: Quite happy with that. more soon Julian 13 1
zebra Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 Fuselage is assembled and cleaned up: It went together pretty nicely, despite the lack of locating pins. I don't think this is going to be a difficult build more soon Julian 13
Beggsy Posted July 27 Posted July 27 I've got this kit in my stash and hope to start it soon. I'll be watching with great interest. 2
zebra Posted July 29 Author Posted July 29 Wings assembled: It's a one piece lower wing, and the upper halves include 5mm or so of both sides of the trailing edge so the join is midway through the flaps and ailerons. Some people don't like this approach but I'm fine with it, the panel lines can be rescribed easily enough and it means there's a nice, clean, thin trailing edge. There is a bit of sanding to do before assembly though - the rear of the lower wing part needs to be thinned down slightly on the inside to allow a good flush fit - a common issue with kits like this. Easily dealt with though - I use a 120 grit sanding sponge, a bit of vigorous sanding with that has it done in no time - and the refreshing thing here is that the instructions actually call it out and tell you it needs doing, which is a first I think. Anyway a bit of filling needed and a few parts to add (flap track fairings, wingtip lights etc) and then I can join the wings to the fuselage. more soon Julian 11
zebra Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 I've cleaned up the wings and added the clear parts to the wingtips - they're not a bad fit but do need a little blending in. I've also assembled the fin. This involves inserting the top half of the s-duct, it's a pretty tight fit and taking a bit of plastic off the outside of the s-duct helped things go together - nothing drastic, just a quick vigorous attack with a coarse sanding sponge. more soon Julian 13

It's a lovely kit and I'm enjoying building it. I particularly like the instructions - the notes for the builder are very helpful and telling the builder where something might need adjusting or a bit of filler rather than leaving us to find out for ourselves is both highly unusual and refreshingly honest! Wings are on - following the aforementioned notes for the builder, a little filling needed at the roots, but nothing dramatic: more soon Julian 9
zebra Posted August 10 Author Posted August 10 Also, I think it's going to be Dan-Air. Although I may yet change my mind! 3
zebra Posted August 17 Author Posted August 17 The fin is on - very nice fit, no filler needed, the slots in the fuselage just needed opening up slightly. The flap track fairings are on as well, but not visible in this photo. It's off to the garage for a coat of primer next. more soon Julian 11
TheyJammedKenny! Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Nice! Are these from 26Decals? They went on extremely well. 1
