Ray S Posted June 22 Posted June 22 Hello all. After a bit of a run building very old kits (taking into account original tooling dates, not re re re issue dates), I thought it was time to attempt one of the newer options around, the MikroMir 1/144 Handley Page Hastings. I had the C1A boxing, which was released in 2021. I snapped one up as soon as the big H had them at Lowestoft, took one look at it, and hid it away in my stash. The reason? well, my preferred option had dayglo or fluorescent red areas, and I knew I was 'rubbish' at painting those colours after innmerable attempts. In the meantime, I have since done some aircraft and a Beach Buggy with one or other of these colours on, and I think I had found a way of brush painting them. Out came the Hastings again, one look at the two options again confirmed the brighter coloured aircraft was the one I wanted to build, so I set to. Having built MikroMir's Blackburn Beverley I had a good idea as to what I was up against, which in general is a good kit, bad fit type of thing, and so it proved this time. I struggled with fitting the tailplanes and then especially the engine nacelles, but pretty much everything else was trouble free. The only let down in my mind were the transfers, where the colours for the roundels, fin flashes and cheatlines were off - the blue being way too light for a start. I had a set of Xtradecal transfers for the Beverley and Argosy, so I sat down and had a look through them. I found that roundels and fin flashes were the correct size, and they also had a batch of cheat lines. I then looked through the options to see which I could sacrifice in the future by pinching some of these markings. Imagine my surprise when I picked up the transfer sheet, and found a second one behind it! I'd looked at these goodness knows how many times in the past for an Argosy build (never started) and had not noticed the second sheet. Anyway, what a result. After all this preamble, this is what I ended up with. Please just don't look too closely at seam lines! I glazed the cabin windows with Humbrol Clearfix, and the fluorescent red was done by brushing on some Humbrol 60 Scarlet acrylic followed by two coats of Revell 332 Fluorescent Red, bot thinned with Winsor and Newton Flow Improver and a spot of distilled water. Although (or because) it took quite a bit of effort, I really enjoyed this. I wonder if there are any alternative markings for other Hastings? I would love to have another bash at one. I'm going to have a look. Thanks for looking, kind regards all, Ray 38 2 2 1
TheyJammedKenny! Posted June 22 Posted June 22 This looks great! She's ready for a hop out of Colerne any minute now. Thanks for showing her off in all her hi-viz beauty. We all need one of these in 1/72, too. Valom: get cracking. Still, in 1/144 Mikromir has captured her shape well. 1 1
Wayne B Posted June 22 Posted June 22 Nicely done. It’s always a pleasure to see unusual subjects in 1/144, especially as well executed as yours. Thanks for posting. 1
Andy Young Posted June 22 Posted June 22 Very nice! - Ray, you have certainly won the Battle of Hastings! The dayglo has come out very well - it’s really difficult to get it just right, not too red and not to bright, you’ve got it spot on. Which paints did you use to do that? Also that’s a great result with the decals, it’s nice when something like that happens! Very well built and thanks for letting us see it. Cheers, Andy 1

Work In Progress Posted June 23 Posted June 23 A rare and welcome sight! That is an interesting technique for the dayglo areas. I've never thought brush painting would work for that, so I am grateful for the ideas. Will try it on a spare fuel tank or something first
kev67 Posted June 23 Posted June 23 Shes a beauty, as said before all we need now is a 1/72 scale kit but NOT mach 2 pleaseeeeee !!!!!!! 🤣 1

For me, there was no other option but the dayglo, no matter how tricky it was in my mind 15 hours ago, Wayne B said: Nicely done. I have always had a liking for less common subjects, but when that subject is something that has a connection, it's even better. I know the kit needs some work, but it is well worth while. 15 hours ago, Andy Young said: Very nice! - Ray, you have certainly won the Battle of Hastings! I've seen that you found out about the paints. As for the decals, well, when I found that second set in the pack, I was buzzing and could have flown unaided! 15 hours ago, ForestFan said: Looks great, great job Thanks for that ForestFan (from a Royals fan who is just pleased my club is still in extistance) 14 hours ago, Andy Young said: I just re-read your post (because it’s so good!) and I realised that you give the paint details at the end.
