Beardybloke Posted June 14 Posted June 14 My inspiration - a Langley Miniature Models Ffestiniog Railway 'Double Fairlie' articulated locomotive - this one started in around 2006 (it was a 21st birthday present from my better half) and eventually finished in about 2008-2009. It's a whitemetal kit, and the moulds were tired even then - not the banana shape, and that's after I'd cut a section out of the cab roof to try and straighten the curve. The chassis is based on the internals of a Bachmann N Gauge North American diesel loco chassis, and so has rather undersized wheels and some very simplistic valve gear. These kits can, though with a little effort, be improved significantly - the comparison photo below shows the other Ffestiniog Railway loco kit from the firm, with the maroon one built more or less out of the box (with the normal extra detailing that doesn't come in the kit e.g. handrails. Aftermarket has been a necessity rather than a choice for 009 modellers since the dawn of time, even if that 'aftermarket' is brass rod!). The green one is one that I built after being shown the horrifically inaccurate cab roof profile and not being able to un-see it; whilst correcting this I also took the opportunity of sourcing a number of finer turned brass parts and modified the profile of the cylinders of the (1/148 European standard gauge) chassis to something more appropriate, lowered it to the correct height on the chassis, and sorted the incorrect rear cab door (it needs some crew to hide the motor). Some bits e.g. the overly-chunky chimney) can't be sorted without wholesale replacement (at which point I might as well buy the superb ready-to-run version) but it does seem to polish up relatively well, and this is more or less what I hope to achieve with the Fairlie (which is also available ready-to-run and looks much better than these): 16 2

AdrianMF Posted June 15 Posted June 15 VEB Plastikart produced some interesting kits. Here's one I bought on a whim because it was cheap in the second hand section of a model shop in the USA: "How bad can it be?" I thought: Gulp! But I had a vision: It was not a shake and bake: But it worked out in the end: *** Shameless Promotion Alert *** So if you have one of these (or even if you just like watching other people build them), please sign up for this: 15 2 6
PhantomBigStu Posted June 15 Posted June 15 Not one for obscure stuff, but seeing as Hobbycraft count they did contribute to two f-86 sabres I built, the fuselage of this is their one before academy got hold of it And then the wings are part of this one, an ill fated attempted to make the fujimi slatted before reverted to hard wings 15
