As if this thread wasn't sufficiently entertaining with the modelling content, we now have the lovely Elizabeth Montgomery too. I may be here some time, just gazing.

Besotted of Cambs.

Me too :)

Well, after catching up with this one I'm rather glad I've got the FROG kit! It seems it will be easier to make the details from scratch than it will be to have to finagle every. single. part. into shape.

Special Hobby in particular seem to make a point of producing kits that are a pain in the donkey to build. Surely they have enough skill and experience to manufacture parts that fit? On several occasions I have picked older or simpler or "worse" kits to build even though I have the Special Hobby/Azur kit to hand, and I don't regret my choices.

Good luck with the rest of the build, it seems like the worst may be over. Just, y'know, the undercarriage to go. What could possibly go wrong?  :whistle: :wicked:

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian. I my not get as far as the u/c :(

Thanks Bill. Galaxy Quest! Great film…

So, three racks done, three to go.

This morning's progress:

Notice anything?

You know I said how pingable the clamps were?

Guess what happened.

Yep, gone.

Of course it waited until the last one, just to prolong the agony.

Is there a spare?

Of course not.

I'm currently trying to get over my rage and now down to fuming mad.

Considering my options.

Most of them destructive.

I could finish but I have limited cabinet space.

Do I really want to use space for this?

Can I ever forget the pain?

I might have some spare parts in my failed attempt, I'll check and let you know.

Well that's influenced me Giorgio. I shall persevere for a while.

This afternoon I assembled some more bits to help me decide:

54687084983_d894d19c82_z.jpg

Flaps and other non-fragile bits stuck on.

Cleaned with IPA to remove handling grease (ewww).

Do these look right?

54687220845_7ac219b2bf_z.jpg

They look 'a bit up' to me. I guess I could TET the hinges and try to… line them up with the bottom (or top) of the wing profile?

Thoughts please.

Next task is to mask the glass:

54687116288_bf3da5e265_z.jpg

Montex masks, prone to peeling off in my experience so last minute job.

Time to tidy the bench.

Wait, what's this?

54686097857_80096dd2cd_z.jpg

Found!

Oh, well that encourages me to go on.

Close up of the racks.

See the location peg on the bottom?

That'll help positioning them:

If only there were holes in the wing :banghead:

This kit keeps fighting you, you keep fighting back. You will prevail

Next time you want to do something easy amd quick, I suggest  a modern Tamiya kit :D

Ced,

you seem to have found a Special Hobby kit that vexes you - but my goodness, you’ve persevered!

Funny thing is I did the same as you on a current build - pinged a tiny teeny fiddly bit from kit to out yonder, Did the Errrrggggghhh moan, then tidied up the workspace to decal and there it was - one tiny teeny fiddly bit sat there, “what, me gov, lost? Naa , been ‘ere waitin’ to be fixed to the kit”!

You’ll get this done and on current form it’ll be a cracker!

I'm so glad you haven't given up on this Ced, you are showing it who's boss!

Amazing find of the missing attachment point!

Treat yourself to a therapeutic AFV build after this. They can be very forgiving. I've probably got one in my stash you could try. Just say the word.

Sorry Ced, but I had to laugh at your last post.

This certainly seems like the kit from Hell but you are persevering and winning, even though you're taking a few punches along the way.

Thanks Terry. AFV? Targets? Hmmm, maybe one day. I have the Tamiya Spit with a truck so that may encourage me.

Feeling a bit Proverbs 26:11 to be honest but you've encouraged me to carry on so let's see how we get on.

The measurements on the (so called) instructions would seem to line up with these panel lines:

54689118313_e069fea45f_z.jpg

and the locating pins are on the back line so:

54689249615_ae0c49f0b1_z.jpg

Ta dah:

54689295165_2e3026a4fb_z.jpg

Then I noticed that the leading edges were a bit rough AND I remembered I'm supposed to use these for curved sanding:

54688105197_91f3ac4ca1_z.jpg

Whilst doing that I noticed the lights / windows were rough:

54689133348_54c581ce02_z.jpg

So I cleaned them up:

54689159498_6b6a00c6af_z.jpg

a bit.

I also soaked the hinges and lowered the flaps:

54689318710_8a79133176_z.jpg

Getting on well.

Spoke too soon:

54689003051_bf4c7f9e59_z.jpg

While doing those other things I'd rubbed off three (careful chaps, two less and I'd have been in trouble) attachment points.

Where are they?

One on the bench, two on the floor (laminate, take that carpet monster).

Reattached:

54688193262_fe9636339a_z.jpg

Masking next. I'll try to make sure I don't rub anything off (fnaar!)

A build with lots of innuendo.... fantastic! :giggle:

I glad you've decided to give in and follow the advice (or is that pressure?) of the masses @CedB and persevere..... you're doing a grand job! :clap2:

I'm still sensing paint in the near future ..... even from way down here in Cornwall!

Keep going, victory will be yours ... one day!

I suddenly feel like I'm in a Carry On film, so it's definitely a Ced thread :D I reckon those markings on the underside are intended to be the rack locations as you found, if only they'd thought it through and added some marks for the holes to be drilled inside the wing like all of the other manufacturers do

Blimey. Just popped on BM as I couldn’t sleep. Now I’m more awake than ever.  🤪The excitement and thrills of a rollercoaster ride!!! I’m glad the tiny part was sitting there waiting to be attached. (Touch and go there for a minute) The last update really shows how lovely this will be when you’re done with it. 👏👏👏 Bravo for pure 100% perseverance. 🙌

Proud of myself for persevering and doing this in one session this morning:

54694864615_3453af1998_z.jpg

I think Mondex have changed their adhesive - the masks seem to adhere much better.

Or maybe I just don't remember…

These didn't really work for me:

54694749658_b20384926e_z.jpg

so I finally got to try the Giorgio recommended masking gum here:

54694540751_7d7d69e4e7_z.jpg

and on here:

54694787294_6fb6e696fb_z.jpg

It does go transparent which makes it tricky to spot gaps but certainly easier than masking awkward shapes.

Ready for primer. I just need to sort out other bits still on the trees.

Masking ‘ greenhouse ‘ canopies, even with pre-cut masks is always a pain, you have good reason to feel proud.
