Marklo Posted May 20 Posted May 20 As you may be aware I love the quirky and or eclectic and the DH Foxmoth ticks all the boxes. So in researching possible builds for the GB I came across this. But of course it not an ANZAC aircraft so no joy. However a bit more digging turned up this… Which an be seen on the left of this pic in same military camo as the Burma based one.. So bingo we have one DH Foxmoth that served in the RNZAF during WW2. And this is where I’m starting. Bought second hand for under a tenner. As is to be expected, not the best kit in the world but it did come with a good decal sheet, plus two extras.. The Foxmoth used the same wings (albeit with a lower sweep angle) engine and cowl and tailplanes with a new fuselage. Comparison of the bits I can use to scale plans isn’t bad. Next step, fabricate a fuselage and a little surgery on those wings… 8
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted May 20 Posted May 20 This should prove to be an interesting conversion. Im not super familiar with DeHavilland’s production prior to the war so will keep tabs on this to learn a lil bit.

Your photo above (in camouflage) is at RNZAF Rongotai (now Wellington Airport), with 42 Squadron. Camouflage would have been NZ Dark Green/NZ Dark Earth and Sky Interestingly NZ566 aka ZK ADI still exists today see link below DH Fox Moth ZK ADI Look forward to your build Regards Alan 1

Marklo Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 Progress, my scroll saw button isn’t latching so I have to cut one handed hence the wavy lines but nothing a little sanding and wood filler won’t fix. Still not sure if I’ll use the kit nose or mold a new one. 6
Rabbit Leader Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Good luck with this Fox Moth project. I believe ready-made 1/72 scale kit was produced just a few short years ago, but good on you for taking this approach to creating something quite unique. Cheers and all the best.. Dave 1

Marklo Posted June 9 Author Posted June 9 The fuselage buck completed, or so I thought until I realised my plans differed from my intended build. The observant among you may notice the biro additions to the pins for an enclosed cockpit. So a bit more woodworking required. Spine added, I’ll let the glue dry then shape it. I’m hoping I’ll be able to mold the canopy integral to the upper deck. I think I need to talk to my cat about her stress levels… 5 1
Magpie22 Posted June 9 Posted June 9 No model room should be without a cat! Watching this one with interest as I am engaged in the same project. In my case I am building the fuselage using plasticard. If you don't want to do the enclosed cockpit, you might consider this one with open cockpit. A41-4, ambulance of RAAF. Peter M 4 1

I’m going to make the lower fuselage from plastic card too and I may use the nose from the kit. I’ll make a mold of the fuselage and see how much of the sides mold properly. So I may mold just the upper decking or the full side. 2
Marklo Posted June 9 Author Posted June 9 Just about there. The pen marks are a tough guide to where the canopy should sit. I’ll add foil frame lines so hopefully I’ll get the canopy complete with the fuselage when I go molding. 5
Marklo Posted June 10 Author Posted June 10 And some framing added with tape which hopefully will mold well. BTW @Magpie22 pm me if you’d like a molding of the upper deck. But It’ll probably be a week or two before I get around to molding. 4

It always amazes me that someone can just shape a block of wood into a fuselage ! Skills beyond me thats for sure. 1

THanks for the offer but, I too, am too far down the road with my model to be able to use it. Peter M 1

Everything I do I’ve learned from reading @Bandsaw Steve s many build threads. 2

Marklo Posted June 16 Author Posted June 16 Finally got around to some molding. Didn’t pull down completely square to the bottom of the fuselage but the upper deck and canopy molded well. Will take that. 9
