So I have a set of the 1/48 scale Fine Mould Lewis Gun 111 clones used on Japanese aircraft in WW2. Were they used by RAF machines pre war and in WW2 despite being substantially superceeded by the Vickers K? It would be nice to use them up accurately.

Cheers

The Hawker Hart and its variants carried Lewis guns and some of them were still in service shortly before WW2.  You could try looking for references on these.  ( A few were even in service during WW2, such as the Audax.

The Vickers Vincent/Vildebeest also carried a Lewis gun and saw some service in WW2.

Early Blenheim Mk I's - their Bristol B1 Mk I turret sported a single Lewis gun.   In the B1 Mk III this was changed to a single VGO (aka Vickers K).    Best to study photos to know which gun was fitted, it is fairly easy to spot the difference.    On the Lewis, the gas tube (below the barrel) is nearly as long as the barrel itself, on the VGO the gas tube is much shorter, ending sort of halfway the barrel.

The manually operated Armstrong Whitworth turrets on the early Whitleys also used a Lewis gun, I believe.    Oh, and Walrus aircraft too if I'm not mistaken.

Lysanders could carry a Lewis or Vickers K in the rear cockpit.  I also vaguely recall seeing a photo of a twin mounted set up in the same location - but find it in the files - can I hell as like !!

pre-war, yes. however... I am not aware of any direct evidence of Lysanders carrying Lewis guns in the back during WW2
