Faraway Posted April 27 Posted April 27 After coming to an abrupt halt on the WW1 torpedo boat, due to 'technical' issues. I've decided to go up scale with this one, it's been sitting, gathering dust for ages and I think it's time it saw the light of day. Heaven only knows where I'll be putting it when it's finished, but I'll worry about that when the time comes. I think I need more shelves, there is an MTB in the same scale lurking somewhere, be nice to have the two opponents displayed together. I know this is not a perfect kit and has known faults, including the propellers which are wildly inaccurate, I've tried to source replacements but to no avail, I know they are out there, I just can't find them. I really should try this 3D printing one day. I'm going to, as is my habit, add a wooden deck and many bits of brass PE. I've got a tin of Schnellbootweiss from Resolution Hobbies, it's in one of the 14ml tins, so I hope its enough (there is an awful lot of plastic in this scale) or I'll be paying a visit to @beefy66 in the not too distant future. So, without further babble here are the bits...... As you can see, a vast expanse of grey plastic. That's a 12" rule !!!!!! But the smaller parts seem nicely moulded and reasonably flash free. The wooden deck bits And many bits of brass. I would normally make a base from wood and brass rod, but that'll be a bit large, so I'll use the included base. Jon 12
Steve D Posted April 27 Posted April 27 Hi Jon, I have my a lot of 3D models from my s-boot build and they include the 3 propellors (LH prop below) which I think will work OK at 1:72nd. If you need upgrades to the kit parts, just PM me Cheers Steve 7
Faraway Posted April 29 Author Posted April 29 And off we go. I'm sort of following the build instructions a very rare occurrence. So am adding the PE parts to the inside of the bridge/cockpit. With the aid of my new toy. I saw this on another WIP log and thought it was good idea, and I was not wrong. It works splendidly, already wondering how I managed before. Jon 5
Faraway Posted April 29 Author Posted April 29 All the PE is on, now to spray. I'm painting before assembly otherwise, that way I can get into the nooks and crannies. 5
Harrysgrandad Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Hi Jon The sprint is on 😁. Hope I can keep up. cheers Graham That looks very good from my position of 5 laps behind you😁 1
Cklasse Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Always nice to see a Schnellboot build. The next upscale after this is the 1/35 S100. At 1m long, it’s still in my stash, waiting for a space to build. Will be watching this build. 1

Faraway Posted April 29 Author Posted April 29 I've got a wooden deck set for this and this is the piece for the bridge floor. As you can see, the floor is actually slats/duckboard and if I put this deck on it, the slats will disappear, so............. I'll separate the individual planks and stick them on the slats. Much better. 12 1

Did you buy it direct from the manufacturer? 1

Fast delivery, ordered Saturday, arrived yesterday. 1
Harrysgrandad Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Just ordered my set - the 4 clamp one like yours. 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 1
Faraway Posted April 30 Author Posted April 30 Can anyone tell me what the deck railings would be on the boat ? The kit comes with these.......... Which are fine, but I'm wondering if they should be stanchions with a chain or cable between them. On some photos I've found they look like chain/cable. Jon 1
madtatt Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Hello Jon. As an example, I could show you my 1:35 Italerie boat, which I built in 2014. Here you can see that it is partly a chain. At the stern, rope was then passed through eyelets. Of course, I can't tell you how accurate Italeri's research was. Then I have this photo which shows the area where the chain was taut, between the two torpedoes. You can see a metal bar above and behind it, and a steel cable underneath. Unfortunately, the two sailors are standing in front of the gap where my chain is. It doesn't appear to be a chain, but it looks like the railing could have been opened there. I hope this helps you a little. 5
Faraway Posted April 30 Author Posted April 30 Thanks for this, that is an excellent model. You’ve backed up what I’ve found online and in the couple of books I have, some of the railings are solid, some are wire, with chains where gangways would lead to dockside. I think that’s what I’ll do. Jon 1
madtatt Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Thanks, Jon. Maybe another tip. I don't know what armament you want to depict; my model has a massive flaw. Aside from the fact that the color scheme on my torpedoes is wrong, if you like I can ask my specialists what color the torpedoes on the speedboats were. Did the boats carry either the torpedoes or the sea mines? Never both. The boats were made of wood and couldn't bear the weight of both, so it was either/or. 1

I'm sticking with the guns that are with the kit, as the PE set has many parts to enhance their detail. This boat is carrying torpedos, which the instructions would have me paint as follows.... Fins....Steel Nose.....Copper Body.....Semi matt brown or Light copper But if you can get a more accurate scheme, then many thanks Jon
beefy66 Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I a tissue paper from a shoe box to cover mine to make the canvas dodgers. Keith 1

Keith That is also on my horizon, I might keep the forward bit on the railings as per kit, solid, and cover with a dodger and then use stanchions I have found online to finish the rest with cord, to look like cable. madtatt Posted May 1 Posted May 1 (edited) Hey Jon. There's a real debate among scholars about the exact color scheme of torpedoes. In Germany, by the way, they were also called eels. The torpedoes, not the scholars. 😁 So, there's agreement on the basic body. It was steel-colored and well-greased. The heads vary between copper and dark gray. Most people say dark gray. The only thing that's certain is the training torpedoes; they were red and white striped or had a yellow ring. What colors does the kit specify? Edited May 1 by madtatt 2

madtatt Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Ok, Jon. What I can say is that the torpedo body itself was an unpainted, bare steel tube that was frequently coated with grease by the crews to increase its seawater resistance and the stern was made of either polished steel or brass. Nose can then be copper, but as far as I know it is mostly dark grey. What I can also say is that I really like your model so far. 😉 1
Micha_Pol Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Working in 1/72 is quite the challenge, best of luck. So far it looks really nice. 1
