Mark Robson - Kotare Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Hi All The Hurricane CAD is 98% done and is looking amazing. There are options for designing the architecture of the wheels/hubs/tyres. One option is separate wheel hubs to facilitate painting ie less masking. Another is moulded halves so that it is easier to "key" the axle attachment to get the right sit of the wheels out of the box. One member of the team strongly prefers one way, another prefers the other way. In the interest of impartiality I won't give details. Do you modellers out there have a preference? Perhaps we can design something that achieves both aims, but let's keep it a simple choice for now; separate hubs or not?? Cheers Mark Robson Kotare Models 5
FG2Si Posted April 21 Posted April 21 My vote is for separate hubs as well. Thanks for asking us Mark! Carl 1 1
Troy Smith Posted April 22 Posted April 22 1 hour ago, Mark Robson - Kotare said: separate hubs allows for 5 spoke hubs from the L/N serials and the later 4 spoke, as AFAIK the tyres are the same. 1 1
ColonelKrypton Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Separate hubs please. As Troy notes, permits flexibility, easier to get five or four spoke wheels as desired. cheers, Graham 1
hairystick Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Seperate hubs please. Nicer for painting. Sorry to hear about modelair though, but concentrating on Kotare takes precedence in your life I presume? 1

I'd say separate hubs is a no-brainer, but is there an engineering down side that makes it controversial? 1
Whitewolf Posted April 22 Posted April 22 (edited) Another vote for separate hubs please. Indeed, could we please have this in all your kits? Thanks! Edited April 22 by Whitewolf 2
Alan P Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I see the advantages of both types but for ease of painting I also prefer separate hubs. 2
Max Headroom Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Separate parts but with a hidden notch or whatnot to ensure correct alignment of the tyre Trevor 2 1
nicholas mayhew Posted April 22 Posted April 22 @Mark Robson - Kotare If I had to choose, I would take fidelity of structure over ease of painting 100/100 Masking wheels in 1/32 may not be the most fun thing, but it's far more fun than endlessly fiddling with wheels and oleos trying to get the alignment right I wonder whether some of the answers above are coming from a smaller scale perspective? Of course, if you can solve both issues, then all the better! Wishing you all the best with current and future projects (including the hinted at Bf109 E 🤫) Nick 1 1
Work In Progress Posted April 22 Posted April 22 separate hubs for me pls, especially given the desirability of 4-spoke / 5 spoke options 2
Phoenix44 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Separate hubs not just for painting but if I understand you correctly also sanding things. If I never had to sand anything ever again I'd be happy. 2
Robin-42 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 (edited) Put it this way, if a kit does not have separate hubs and aftermarket offers them, I buy aftermarket! Edited April 22 by Robin-42 2
MrB17 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Separate wheels and tyres, just like the real thing. Cheers Jeff 2

nicholas mayhew Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Just now, Alan P said: Funny you should say that, it's increasingly rare to find aftermarket 1/32 wheel sets that aren't separate wheel hubs and tyres 🤔 and sadly the fit of many of them (talking aftermarket resin) is extremely poor - i have been disappointed by wheels from Eduard and a number of others frustrating, because the detail is often exquisite 🤷♂️ 1
Alan P Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I'm a Reskit guy myself 😉 But Armory do some really nice fully moulded wheel sets, I used some for the Kotare early Spit. So as I said, I can see the benefits of both types, but I'm confident that if Kotare did separate mouldings for wheels and tyres, they would be beautifully done 👍 2
