zebra Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I've just finished these two 1/144 BAC 1-11s in the Give Peace A Chance group build. Build thread is here. They're from Two Six and Kitshobby re-boxes of the Eastern Express kit. The Braniff decals are from Vintage Flyer and the Manx decals are from Two Six. The engines are my own 3D printed replacements - the kit doesn't include the hush-kitted engines I needed for the Manx one, and since I was doing those I thought I might as well also do the standard engines. Next job will be to adapt them to the Mark I fuselage so I can replace the odd-shaped engines in that kit. Braniff first: and Manx: thanks for looking Julian 38 5
Alpha Delta 210 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Great-looking pair and the 3D printed engines look excellent. 1
Skodadriver Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Excellent work as always Julian. I love the 3D printed engines! Dave G 1
bzn20 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Very good ,especially the Braniff Jellybean scheme and range of colours they used . Made such an impact back in the 1960s .Remember the Braniff 1-11s at Wisley on flight testing before delivery in the previous colours seen here http://www.bac1-11jet.co.uk/bac1-11jet.co.uk The 50th Anniversary.htm 1
mechanic86 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 They are looking great👍 Many years ago I built the Airfix kit in British Caledonian Colors. Airlines from another timeperiode are always nice to see 🙂 1 1

I had this version ,bought around 1967 https://www.vintage-airfix.com/airfix-kits/b-a-c-one-eleven/#google_vignette 1 1
David H Posted April 6 Posted April 6 They both look great, Julian! I dig the 3D printed resin engines a lot! 1
Longhorn Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Great looking builds. As others have said, your printed engines look very nice. 1
Ad-4N Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Your green is spot on for a Braniff bird. Well done. Love it. What paint did you use? Or is it a mix? Phenomenal!!! 1
zebra Posted April 8 Author Posted April 8 Thanks everyone! 5 minutes ago, Ad-4N said: Your green is spot on for a Braniff bird. Well done. Love it. What paint did you use? Or is it a mix? Phenomenal!!! It's Scale Modellers Supply PL06 Green which was a pretty good match for the colour samples that came with the decals. Some of the Braniff colours are pretty hard to match, fortunately this one wasn't! 1

I have a Braniff BAC1-11 yet to do, hence my curiosity. Thanks so much. Hope mine turns out ss well as yours. 3

I've got one on the bench in a darker blue - also Testors, can't tell you which off the top of my head though. 1

I feel silly. I’ve heard of the brand, SMS but didn’t know the acronym. 🫢 Never used them. Australian brand , no? Edited April 8 by Ad-4N

Yes SMS is Australian. It's an airbrush-ready lacquer and it's become my go-to for a lot of colours. It sprays nicely, I get a good finish without many coats, and some of the colours that are a PITA with some other brands go on very well - whites and yellows for example. I'm not convinced about the authenticity of some of their colours so I use them more for generic colours, but then I think I could say that about most brands. And it helps that it's local and very easy to get hold of. 1
Ian Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Oh those Manx 1-11's , can remember them screeching out of Speke back in the day (even when they had the hush kits fitted !). Brilliant builds, great nostalgia trip. 1
mitchem Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I'm working on a 1-11 kit at the moment, so thanks for the inspiration(s) ! 👍👍 mike 1

Brilliant builds, great nostalgia trip. Thanks! I flew on G-WLAD between Speke and Ronaldsway once, back when Manx had a cheap 'farecracker' flight in the middle of the day. I used to be treated to the sound of 1-11s taking off from Manchester - if they turned right after an 06 departure they'd go over our house - so loud you could tell if it was Dan Air or BA from the sound!
flieger Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Cool👍🏻 I have a thing for the Bac111 because there were a few regional and commuter airlines down in the US that operated them during 1980’s. The likes of Britt, Air Illinois, Cascade, and Florida Express 1
GAVIN BURNS Posted April 25 Posted April 25 You should market and sell those awesome engines. I would buy some. Excellent finish on both of those BAC 1-11's - great job! 1
