CedB Posted March 29 Posted March 29 My next build will be this one for the Norfolk Museum: Giorgio has built the bubble top here: So please have a look at that thread for part trees pictures and how a proper modeller tackles the kit. I'll be following that thread for ideas (thanks Giorgio) with the usual "I wish I could do that" considerations. Jim has asked that I build the 'plane flown by Lt Col Wayne K Blickenstaff ("Blick"): I'm also (re)reading Blick's autobiography 'Ace in a Day'; great book. His Wiki entry is here and you can see from that how was a highly decorated flying ace credited with 10 aerial victories, including five in a single day, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross during World War II. So, off we go. Jim's provided some PE. Can I find transfers for this plane? No. How am I going to handle the checkerboard cowling? No idea. Looks like custom transfers. Maybe. Should be fun. Maybe. 10 4
silverfox63 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Oh look, front row. Have fun Ced, looks interesting. Cheers, Chris. 1
Biggles87 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Me too! The only problem with sitting in the front row is you tend to get asked questions and you can’t nod off without it being noticed. It’s a nice kit if I remember rightly. John. 🇺🇦 1 8

giemme Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I'm in, I'm in!! Great kit this one, you'll have a blast! The engine cowling can stay off for most of the build, so I'd mask for the checkerboard... less frightening than decals on that surface.... Ciao 1 1 1

Ciao Good to hear Giorgio! Mask for the checkerboard? Gulp. There's a pilot in the kit! For me, always has to be done: The Citadel seam scraper is great. I've had it a while and I love tools that seem to know their job and just get on with it. So, the pit parts: Terrified I'd lose it I glued the throttle quadrant on. PE for the i/p requires the kit part to be flattened but I realised that there are raised bits on the side, luckily before I sanded it flat: Bits chopped off and then out with the new toy tool: PE glued with Gator's thin but I've forgotten if it dries clear (it does) so top bit stuck on with canopy glue: Should look glassy? Some time later the pit parts are painted, Hu30 as suggested in the 'What's Dark Green' thread. Blick's had a Ratskin prime and the gunsight glossish black: Did the canopy glue work on the i/p? Who knows. At least it's lined up. 18 1
hendie Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Nice start Ced. We're nearly at the end of page one and the pilot still has his legs...wot's going on with the world these days? 8
ijs302 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 If there's a seat available I'm in for this one, looking good already Ian 1
Hamden Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I'll slide in at the back by the bar and keep a seat for Bill @perdu. Do carry on in your own time Ced Roger 2
Terry1954 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Comfortably in on page one and fairly near the front. Nice subject Ced, and 1/48 too .......... get you! Excellent start with an IP done already. Looking forward to this one, and as I'm assuming you are planning for a September delivery, I'd better get my skates on with the half finished Green Nose job! I've no doubt you'll be done ahead of me. T. 1
Biggles87 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 You’ve probably all heard this before but it was said that the P-47s cockpit was so big that if the pilot got bored on a long escort mission he could get up and stroll around for a while! John. 🇺🇦 8

Ced this looks fun, I might play too Looks like Betty Boop shoes, no? 4
giemme Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Still on page 1 and the cockpit is practically completed! Blazing speed! Ciao 1 1 1

You just never know in a Ced thread. More fiddling. There are two little (and I mean little) levers to go on. Can you see it? In the triangle to the left of the '60'. Of course I lost it. If you see it later, shout out! Bits chopped off ready for PE: …and painted glossy black: Blick is progressing: 15 1

Jeff G Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I have this exact kit in the stash so I'm excited to see how this goes and ask questions along the way. Looks like the room is filling up and I may have bumped a few elbows on my way in but I'm settling in my seat for the long haul...carry on! 2
