Rob 1 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) I haven't posted any new builds on here for a long time, so here's a long overdue set of photos of the Graf Spee in 1/350, backdated to slightly happier times for her in 1937, around the time of her ceremonial attendance at the King's Coronation fleet review. The kit is the Academy Graf Spee, the premium kit with a nice wooden deck, some photo etch and finely turned metal barrels for all the main and secondary armament, and I added an Eduard full photo etch set, Black Cat twin 37mm mounts and single 20mm guns and crew. Back dating was interesting involving looking into the photos available from the relevant dates as quite a few alterations were made in a short space of time during her short career, this mostly needed some scratch built platforms for the main tower and around the funnel mounts, and some new search lights. Also despite searching far and wide there were no He 60 aircraft available so scratch built this too from scaled plans. Edited March 23 by Rob 1 44 8 1
Rob 1 Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 (edited) Ah, hadn't realised how much the photo hosting file compression would reduce the image quality, will try to upgrade my account. Edit - have just upgraded the account with HobbyPhotoHost and now showing better images. I could go even larger but not sure how that would work on everyone's displays. Edited March 16 by Rob 1 1
Micha_Pol Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Outstanding work, you captured the beauty of those rather unique ships. The calm water surfacce is beautuiful too. The crew adds a much-needed sense of scale. BTW I have fully moved away from "hobbyphotohost" due to image quality problems. Just use https://imgbb.com/ instead for a more pleasant experience. 1
Donald Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Very impressive modelling. The paint job and weathering is excellent. 1
Autle Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Absolutely fantastic modelling, painting and weathering, real top class stuff on display. Well done 1
Noel Smith Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Outstanding model of this well known 'pocket battleship' as they were referred to. Cannot add any more superlatives than previous posters. 1
robgizlu Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Really nicely done, I especially like your hull streaking Rob 1
Jeff.M Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Outstanding work! I’m a big fan of subtle weathering, and your is very well done. Best, Jeff 1
beefy66 Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Great looking build Rod very well detailed and presented. Stay Safe Keith 1
Rob 1 Posted March 22 Author Posted March 22 (edited) Thanks for all the comments 🙂. How I like to build is a fairly crisp ship with all the trimmings, then add the subtle weathering and crew to bring it to life. Here's a few more to show some of the crew, did a bit of research on the uniforms which is the sort of thing that adds interest when carrying out the building. Edited March 23 by Rob 1 7
Toryu Posted March 24 Posted March 24 Very impressive! I love the crew figures (not found too often on ship models) and the floatplane. 1
Mr. Church Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Very nice indeed. Lovely detailing and great looking sea base. 1
Harrysgrandad Posted April 3 Posted April 3 Lovely work Rob, especially the weathering. Oh, and the figures 👌🏻. Graham 1
