BarneyNo Freddy Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Hi, think about doing a Sea Fury during carrier catapult launch but not been able to find much references material. Does anybody have any pointers to info or images please? Thanks in anticipation
David Womby Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Were Sea Furies or other prop naval fighters launched from the deck use catapults? I thought they came in with the jet era. Hurricanes were launched from catapults off non-aircraft carrier ships. David
Graham Boak Posted March 16 Posted March 16 The RN had catapults before WW2, but they called them accelerators. The main role was for heavily loaded strike aircraft, but they were used by fighters too when the deck was otherwise busy. Sea Hurricanes Mk.1b were fitted with spools and pick-up points as well as arrester hooks.
Shake Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) Sea Furies where certainly able to be launched by catapults, they where equipped with with a catapult hook under the fuselage and an attachment (Tail hook?) for the hold back ring. To my surprise it was very difficult to find photo's or film with a catapult launch of a Sea Fury, but I did find these: Hawker Sea Fury arrestor trials, sea trials on Illustrious 1949, and in full action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvsVGtVOc_A (unfortunately embedding is not allowed) And this is from a Dutch television program about a faulty catapult launch which the pilot survived after sinking to about 50 meters depth. And this is a still sequence from the incident. (Collectie: Nederlands Instituut Militaire Historie) Sjaak Edited March 16 by Shake Fingertrouble with Youtube embedding 1
Grey Beema Posted March 16 Posted March 16 The Airfix 1/48 Sea Fury comes with RATOG (?) rockets but I’m not sure if these were used for catapult take off or just normal take off assistance. Also what was the take off configuration, I would assume 10° flap but not sure..

BarneyNo Freddy Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 Shake, thanks that video was really useful, I had seen one with guys connecting a hook but I had assumed it was 'conventional' set up with one under each wing but that video shows a single central catapult hook, not seen that before. 1
NAVY870 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Sea Fury has a single spring loaded hook that retracts back into the fuselage when not in use. It is mounted on the centre line just forward of the main gear well.
BarneyNo Freddy Posted March 21 Author Posted March 21 I have only seen the video clip that Shake flagged, struggled to find any other images, anybody know if the aircraft got airborne tail down or did it lift the tail to a level attitude?
Junchan Posted March 29 Posted March 29 There is a photo of a Sea Fury, though it was revere printed, being catapulted from HMS Glory in the IWM photo collection. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205162873 Jun in Tokyo https://www.flickr.com/photos/horaburo/albums/
