robgizlu Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Well mateys - I'm back after an extended tour over on AFV and timed it well with the arrival of Foreart's Type 42 Destroyers Sheffield and Coventry. They were promised some 8-9months back and I for one have been waiting eagerly. I've taken 2 of the HMS Coventry edition. At a price of £34.95 each it seemed rude not too. Am I getting old or does that seem rather good value by today's standards? So.......what's it like? Well on on first inspection it really does seem rather good. You have a choice of Waterline or hull... And one of the first nice touches is a choice of Bridge pieces - clear so that you can mask windows or opaque as is more commonly the norm And should you go for the clear - you'll have noticed that there are internal Bridge details... Surface detail seems very good - well in excess of recent Trumpeter offerings and whilst I'll be replacing the ships boats and soome other details, when it came to the turret - it hardly seems worthwhile as the Gun turret has the rear ladder nicely moulded with the top railings etc - hard to see in the pic but they are definitely there... The Lynx HAS 3 is nicely detailed. I was intrigued that L'Arsenal recently advertised a 3D print of the Lynx that looked nice but oddly it hasn't appeared in their catalogue yet despite the fanfare And I know YOU know this but I didn't ........................looking at the Trumpeter pack of "Lynx HAS 3's" which are moulded in clear plastic so that once again you can mask "windows"; except they are not HAS 3's at all but rather HMA8s? I stand to be corrected, @Chewbacca and @Ex-FAAWAFU?? Some more really nice touches that might just be with the first Edition of these kits are a metal barrel for the Mk 8 gun and a 3D printed 965 radar Decals are provided for the "Falklands ID" black bands Though as others have commneted I'm not sure about the blue in that Union Jack - I'm not certain that I can live with that but more on it later in the Blog. And here's one last shot of the crude dry-fit The plan is for on vessel, likely HMS Glasgow to be mounted on a stand and the other - likely HMS Cardiff to be waterlined in a sea base. I was hugely taken by this iconic photo of HMS Cardiff during her time on Armilla patrol in the Gulf circa 2002........ It would be rude not to.......................don't you love those 2 Pacific RIBs with their lifting derricks. Now as it happens Swordfish models have just released a whole bunch of "Modern" RN items, one of which is a pair of 24ft pacific RIBs I haven't quite decided whether Glasgow will be in her pre Falklands livery - that is painted boats and pennant number present OR as per the diagrams above in war attire. To set the mood I'm currently reading David Brown's history of the RN in the Falklands war and very good it is too So - it's VERY good to be back building floatey things and I'm looking forwards to tackling this brace. The theme for the rest of the year will be Modern RN subjects. Rob 28
beefy66 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Nice one Rob I am sure you would have seen that Peter Hall will release a PE and Decal set for this to. Stay Safe Keith 2
Terry1954 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 This certainly looks like a good'n Rob. Will have to get myself one of these for sure. Will follow this one for sure! T. 1
theskits62 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Probably too modern for me by about 60 years but a lovely looking ship nevertheless so i'll be following along. 1
davecov Posted March 14 Posted March 14 I have been looking forward to seeing somebody build this kit, ever since it was first announced, so I will dig out some popcorn and watch the fun. The box artwork in particular brings back lots of memories. In 1980, I was serving in HMS Antrim and we along with HMS Coventry and HMS Alacrity made a visit to Shanghai, the first visit by RN ships since the Yangste Incident. The red and white banner in the background was a bit embarrassing as they had spelt "Coventry" wrong. As my surname was Coventry, there was much taking the pee by my shipmates. Here is a photo I took at the time: Dave 7

JohnWS Posted March 14 Posted March 14 It looks like a nice quality kit Rob. I really like the clear plastic parts. Looking forward to following along. John 1
Micha_Pol Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Very good looking kit from a company I´ve not heard of yet. Best of luck with the build. 1
Ex-FAAWAFU Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Coventry was sunk before the HAS3 even existed; strictly HAS2 for her, though at this scale the difference is invisible. That Lynx you show in your photo doesn’t look like a Mk. 8 to me - but you were talking about a clear styrene version? P.S. I am very sure about that Union Flag; it’s awful! 4

Stay Safe Keith I have now Keith - curious to know what Peter will include - tempted to hold off at least one build - the kit supplied etch doesn't really allow you to deploy the Helideck safety netting in a flat configuration so that's one area I'll hope he'll improve on. The later "Stage" 42s also had a platform on the funnel that might be handy in etch. 18 hours ago, Ex-FAAWAFU said: Coventry was sunk before the HAS3 even existed; strictly HAS2 for her, though at this scale the difference is invisible. Crisp - Trumpeter sell a set of 1/350 Lynxes that they label as "HAS3". They are moulded in clear plastic so that masking the windows will leave a more authentic appearance than with opaque plastic that is "painted". Despite the HAS 3 designation they appear to be HMA 8s with under the nose radar etc Rob 3

I haven't seen anything on his website yet, and I'm not on facebook. Thanks in advance. 1
Gondor44 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I am going to follow this if you don't mind as I recently received one of these myself. A couple of things I have noted between this kit and its sister Type 42 is the different top to the funnel, I have yet to get around to reading through my references so I don't know yet how many other ships of the type had the same funnel top. I also wonder how many people will paint the Sea Darts in Red when they do the Coventery in her Falklands colours. Gondor 1

The two Argentine ships also had them. 2 1

Spot on - HMS Coventry is a better base kit for the Type 42s as a class On 3/16/2025 at 8:33 PM, Alan P said: Looking forward to the build(s), particularly modernising the kit for the Cardiff 😃 As am I Alan - Glasgow will come first as a "picket" model and hopefully Peter will have produced his etch set by the time of Cardiff So as is my custom - I've worked on the bases first - my least favourite job, though made easier by the "Split hull" design. I simply plonked the Waterline hull section down on the styrofoam and drew around it Et voila! I've on;y produced 2 models on predestals, one of which is my HMS Severn that I really like so HMS Glasgow is going to be a pedestal model and Cardiff will be "planted". The top and bttom hull "halves" joined well with no gaps though with a slight overhang on the bottom hull segment that took a good hour of scraping and filing to abolish It needed a small amount of filler at bow and stern ... The first modelling task is to complete and paint the Quarter deck that will be covered by the main deck...... Somebody commented on FB that it had the setail of a Flyhawk kit and I think that's very apt. The quarter deck section is admirably detailed... The etch is thin and really top notch Watertight doors are double sided and so can be modelled open More soon - Thanks for looking Rob 26 1
Terry1954 Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Looks like a great kit Rob and you've made a fine start. Mine is on backorder at Jadlam! T. 1
