Fantastic lesson in paint application steps there, Giorgio.

The result looks very good indeed.

Beautifully done, Giorgio! I can just never be bothered to do all that preshading...

The marvelling on the paint work is superb. I might be tempted to go back to using that technique.  Looking really rather special. 🙌

Great job Giorgio, the marbling has certainly done its job helping to provide that used/faded look to the topcoat. Thanks for sending the link to the thread. Look forward to seeing it progress. I've never built a Spitfire, or Hurricane, or Me-109, Fw-190 etc, etc...I'm weird like that, sticking firmly to the esoteric stuff, but always nice to see how others approach it.

Thank you, Ced! It certainly took some time, but not as much as you'd think - and the result is well worth the effort, IMHO

As I mentioned above, not really that big deal, and I love the result :) Thanks for the praise!

Thank you Cookie, you are way too kind! But I'm still quite at the early steps, here - still loads to do to achieve the final aspect :frantic: :D

Thank you, Johnny! Marbling seemed to suit this AC properly, although I wouldn't use it universally.

"Esoteric" made me laugh :D  :D  Anyway, I do remember a very beautiful P-38 of yours, quite mainstream if you want :D  It was an absolute delight to be able to see it again up close in her display area at the Museum, along with your newest addition :worthy:

Being relatively young to modelling, I love building all the classics, and as you can see from my signature, I bounce back and forth from WWII propeller fighters (mostly) to modern (more or less) jets, with a hint of phanatism for the mighty Phantom.... :D

Anyway, your praise means a lot to me, seeing that you are in a totally different league

Enough blah blah: despite of last WE spent in the UK with the usual bunch of reprobates, delivering models to the Museum(s), enjoying James (the curator) knowledge and hospitality, and having fun and beers around pubs, I did manage to fit some progress in just before leaving, so here goes:

cannon barrels glued in

painting34

Their color is irrelevant, as they'll be oversprayed with white. Speaking of which, here's the masking, mostly with Tamiya Tape for curves and Tamiya regular tape

painting35

The tail band too

painting36

No overspray, alright? :D

painting37

Photos of the real AC show some heavy chipping on the wing leading edge white bands, so in an attempt to reproduce that, I brushed on some Pebeo Liquid gum in sparse dots

painting38

painting39

This thing

painting40

Once dry, I airbrushed Tamiya Flat White and, after a few minutes, unmasked:

painting41

painting42

painting43

painting44

painting45

No paint leaks whatsoever, once more, so I could then remove the film patches left by the liquid masks, just by rubbing them off with my finger

painting46

painting47

painting48

painting49

Initially, I wasn't very happy with the result, as it looks more like paint flake off, rather than chipping. It is true that at normal viewing distance the effect wasn't so bad, but anyway right before posting this update I went back to check my reference pics, and they actually show a sort of flaked off effect. Bottom line, I'm confident that with the next weathering steps, I'll be able to attain an effect I'm happy with

That's it for this update, all comments welcome.

I'm participating in a model contest at a nearby show next WE (taking the Corsair the HAF Phantom), so I don't know how much modelling I'll be able to manage this week, but I should hopefully start designing masks for the roundels and the codes.

Didn’t have to wait long for an update! As the others have said it was great to catch up at the weekend…same again next year. Gawd knows what Jim has planned for us, a Thai massage parlour knowing him…

Good luck with the competition Giorgio, your HAF F-4 deserves a gong or two.

Very neatly masked there, Giorgio, as always with your builds. It was great to finally meet you in person, and I very much appreciated the advice on spraying the Lifecolor paints :D

Well, don't get too used to frequent updates... :D  And, as if on cue, this one is coming two weeks later...

Very much looking forward to next year rendez-vous, not necessarily with exotic activities involved...

No joy at the competition, but to be fair there was a boatload of outstanding models, with participants not only form Italy but also from Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Spain and probably other countries I forgot...

James

Thanks James  And it was my pleasure meeting you - thanks again for the ride! Some Lifecolor spraying in this update, see below...

Alright, time to mask and airbrush roundels: these were fairly simple to design, but jsut to be safe, I posed the entire mask in place and only then removed the unwanted portions, leaving them thus:

painting50

No overspray, right? Well, after sealing the mask edges with brushed on Future, I airbrushed Lifecolor Matt French Blue, which seemed quite a good match with the decal roundels - thinned only with Windex. This way, it flowed like a dream through my GSI PS270 airbrush, although I probably mixed it a bit too thin...

After the blue, I gloss coated it, applied the outer rings inside the masks (and the rectangles for the fin flash) and airbrushed Tamiya Flat White, thinned with IPA. Prior to that, though, I used liquid gum again on the fin, trying to replicate the paint flaking on the fin, as seen of period pics. Here's the big reveal:

painting51

Not bad so far, but you can start to see something wrong...

painting52

Wing and fuselage roundels looking proper, but there was a huge overspray on the spine, near the fin, and some blue leakage on the fin flash... :banghead:

Better seen here:

painting53

But here was the real mess:

painting54

painting55

Sometimes I should really listen to my own advice, about masks placement... :banghead: :wall:

Anyway, quite an easy fix overall, I was more annoyed at the fact that I didn't get everything right in one go

I cut a couple of whole discs and placed them over the lower wing roundels:

painting56

painting57

The bluetack is there because I cut the masks around the small bumps they sit on, to have it conform better - sort of complementary masking

I did the same with the fin flash

painting58

painting59

And after respraying:

painting60

painting61

painting62

painting63

I obviously had to mask and respray for the white tail band too, but that was limited only to its very top section.

After a protective gloss coat, here's how she sits now:

painting64

Next on are the fuselage letters, whose masks I've already cut. This will have to wait, though: next five days I'll be busy with a business related show in Milan, where I'm an exhibitor with my company.

Meanwhile, all comments welcome.

Ciao

Great recovery Giorgio :)

I like the tip on cutting masks over bumps and covering with BluTak - in the 'toolbox', thanks!

As Simon says she's looking splendid and those close-ups of the roundels really show off the paint variation. Great stuff.

Phew!!! Glad you sorted the leaky paint.  What do you use to dab on the mask fluid? Did you try a little bit of scouring pad cut off and pulled apart? It gives a really nice chip effect in my opinion.

looking grand regardless.

Cheers Johnny, thanks! I used an old brush, since I wasn't exactly looking for chipping, more for a flake-off look. Thanks for the tip, though, I've never tried that but I'll sure give it a go next time!

Back to the build, shall we? :) Last bit of masking, the fuselage letters: masks in place

I sealed their edges by brushing on some clear gloss, then I airbrushed them with Tamiya Flat White

Period pics show the R and G looking quite scruffy, as opposed to the V looking quite intact; so I went at them with a sharply pointed toothpick:

See? I've already started the weathering.... :D

Anyway, she's now all glossed up and, guess what? Ready for decals and stencils... oh joy :(
