Eduard 1/48 Tempest II on Verlinden Luftwaffe Swing Compass. I made the compass and base yesterday with the help of a picture frame and layers of picture frame card. The scene is only inspired by the photo of XC-D on the compass at the ex-Luftwaffe base at Zeltweg, Austria in July 1947. In real life MW416 did not carry the unit crest on the fin at this time as well as the fact that the Verlinden Luftwaffe swing compass is not the type seen at every Luftwaffe base but rather the type seen at factories and final assembly bases. I very much enjoyed doing this little scene and hope one day the other type of compass may become available in kit form in the same way that Eduard and others have released PSP plating and the like. Thanks for looking. Best wishes, John

Wow! I’m every sense of the word! The Tempest is beautiful and the base is marvellous, good job!

The Tempest by itself is quite a looker.  Add to it this base and the combination just excels.  Great work and thanks for sharing.

Hi John, outstanding build, would you mind sharing source for the photo from Zeltweg, printed or online material?

Hi the photo of XC-D on the other type of swing compass can be found in the Eduard 'Ultimate Tempest' book. There are photos on the internet of other RAF aircraft types using this equipment and other Luftwaffe items. I even found photos from the Korean war of 77 Sqn RAAF using Luftwaffe wheel chocks still!

John,

This is the very best Tempest II build I have seen- in any scale! Added to which your bare metal finish is incredibly realistic and the compass platform is outstanding, you have set the bar pretty high! Well done and beautifully photographed-, I bet @Chris Thomas is smiling! :goodjob:

A super build, spectacularly and unusually displayed, which gets my admiration for both skill and imagination. 🏆

Thank you very much for all the info, still looking for  pics of Tempest II being serviced inside same hangar being used today as a museum in Zetweg, see you soon in Moson!

Beautiful plane and fantastic model of it. I did enjoy building the Eduard kit and seeing this makes me want to add another to my collection. Really sets it off on a unique base too.

Hi Mike - not bare metal but High Speed Silver painted finish. Only bare metal is on the rear section of the hood frame.

Best wishes, John

How good! I love the swing compass, too - every time I've swung a compass we've had to manually move the aircraft to its new heading. I had no idea these things existed!
