Muchmirth Posted May 30 Posted May 30 At least it’ll be fun with the winter white wash being scrubbed back to reveal tri tone in spots that’s the one your going for. 1 1

Keeff Posted May 30 Author Posted May 30 Good question @Stef N.. I might make myself a paint mule to try. I'm sure I've seen it done with oils too .... Keith ☺️ 3

Keith ☺️ I was actually gonna suggest the mig ammo washable white for this…. But … some times they’re not that washable. I used this white wash on my kv2 and had to scrub and scrub to get it come off, anyway was very difficult to remove. I would have liked to have removed more. Theirs a ton of variables with any paint. I know others like Ed had better results with it on a pz iv I think because he probably thinned it better and used an airbrush as opposed to a brush (which is what I used). What I’ve done recently is apply a thin layer of hair spray below the washable to ensure it comes off and then scrubbing it back shortly after it has set. But as you say the oils work a treat, usually looks good after the washable or main white wash has come off as it enhances the really white areas where it’s stuck hard. It enlivens those areas pretty well, especially if you’ve gone the other way and taken too much off. Not sure how it would work as a main event though. Paul 2

Keeff Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 (edited) Greetings tank fans! Thank you to @Stef N., @Muchmirth and @Longbow for the advice and information regarding colours. It was really appreciated! Having managed to grab some time in the tank factory, it's time for update number 10: First, I decided to get all the information about S04 from Tiger1.info and made myself a reference 'pack' ... all 19 pages of it! This covers all the bits that need attention on the kit: Then, inspired by the info to hand, an epic three hour airbrushing session in the garage ensued (more space!) I got the trailing arms, wheels, sprockets, idler wheels and hull underside painted: Never has my airbrush compressor ran so hot! 🥵 Next steps .... a coat of gloss varnish so some wathering can be applied behind the wheels, paint the tyres which I'll be doing with an AK real colours Rubber black marker (should make things easier!) and then work to get the wheels on. Sounds like a plan ..... what could possibly go wrong? As always, comments welcome! Keith ☺️ Edited June 1 by Keeff 8 2
NIK122 Posted June 1 Posted June 1 An epic build for sure with all the road wheels. It's coming along very nicely 😎 1
Longbow Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Keith, there is some video footage out on YT of these tigers crossing a bridge, it’s also on a Gif out there. not sure if this link will work. It’s S24. https://www.google.com/amp/s/purebred-tanks.tumblr.com/post/137222174503/tiger-s24-from-the-13ss-panzer-regiment-1-of/amp 1
FrancisGL Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Hi Keith, I'm sure painting all that took a lot of effort. It makes sense here, size does matter... so many wheels and parts, and so many warnings on those printouts... I don't envy you... lol. Good progress so far. Cheers Francis 👍 1 1

I have had a look and it shows mainly the turret. 1 hour ago, FrancisGL said: I'm sure painting all that took a lot of effort. Three hours and half a 17ml bottle of paint .... plus thinners! 1 hour ago, FrancisGL said: I don't envy you.. I'm enjoying the challenge of making this as accurate as possible. Some things are minor, some will need a bit of thought to correct, but the information provided is really good. As a minor update, I read that the wheels were painted on both sides. A dry fit of them earlier revealed that some still showed the primer, so another airbrushing session in the garage has corrected this! I also added a couple of thinned coats on the hull that was painted at the same time as the wheels. Happy modelling! Keith ☺️ 4
Bullbasket Posted June 2 Posted June 2 Nice progress Keith. 48 wheels?? I'm glad that my big build has only got 24, and they're much smaller. Keep it up. John. 1 1

To those that know all how do you know they actually painted the very lowest underneath in Dunkelgelb and not just left in red oxide? Pete

I'm taking an educated guess here .... 🤞 I haven't done a 'full thickness' coat, more of a couple of dusting coats ... Happy to hear the thoughts of the collective too! Keeff Posted June 6 Author Posted June 6 (edited) Greetings tank fans! Just a small update (number 11) on this epic .... after all that wheel painting, I did a dry fit while working out the best way to apply some weathering. This revealed that there was a lot of red showing where it shouldn't, and as the wheels were painted both sides, I got back on the airbrush. I now have the wheels painted properly, and the tracks partially done: I need to varnish the lower hull and wheels so I get them weathered, fitted and clear some bench space... As always comments, banter and a gallon of Dunkelgelb welcome! Have a great weekend! Keith ☺️ Edited July 6 by Keeff 7
Keeff Posted July 6 Author Posted July 6 (edited) Greetings tank fans! It's been a while since the last update mainly due to the Mosquito Group Build project taking a precedence and as punishment I've been relegated to page 3! But, things have been happening and here I am with update number 12 ..... Wheels and tracks - lets be honest here, in 1/35th scale, the Tiger wheels and tracks can be painful, but scale that up and it's a whole different game! Having re-glossed the wheels using VMS varnish applied by brush that was left a couple of days to fully harden, I spent almost two hours painting the tyres using an Ammo Real Colour rubber black marker - RCM001 which is pretty good, but still took two coats per wheel. I had started spraying the tracks with a red-brown track primer colour, but changed this in favour of black and despite using lots of it, there are still areas where the plastic needs covering. A new plan might be needed here where the links need to be separated and sprayed individually as they are fully working after all. Anyway, this is what they look like at the moment: The radiator fans needed the centre hub lip reducing so a session with the craft knife has them sorted and looking much more like the refence pictures I used: Paint has been flung at some components - air ducts for the radiators are primed (need to confirm the colours as some references show a plain metal finish externally) and the drive sprockets and idler wheel rims have had a metal finish applied as wear, although this needs dulling somewhat: Some other smaller assemblies have been completed - exhaust body, air intake pipes, and the Feifel filters primed and pre-shaded: On the rear deck, the bolt hole circled in red was added as per the information from Tiger1.info: And a few bits added to the rear of the hull - tow eye, Feifel filter and jack mounts: So, that's where I'm at currently. A long way to go, but slowly getting bits done. As always, comments, banter and a paint roller are welcome! Keith ☺️ Edited July 6 by Keeff 8
FrancisGL Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Hi Keith, Despite the huge amount of work that a 1/16 requires, I didn't imagine it, what you already have looks very good, the bottom and back have a very nice color. Cheers Francis 👍 1
Stef N. Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Although it's big, I won't moan about spraying my Brummby after this.😁 Loving the attention to detail Keith, it's going to make this build even more special. 👍👍 1 1
Bullbasket Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Keith, that is looking the bee's danglies, or is that the dog's knees. Whichever, you're making a great job of this. Nice work. John. 1
Muchmirth Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) Yeah looking good Keith, those bits for the ducts that you were talking about were bare metal. I know what you mean about the two coats with the pens, they’re handy though. Keep it up, gonna be a cracker. Edited July 6 by Muchmirth 1
Keeff Posted July 6 Author Posted July 6 @FrancisGL, @Stef N., @Bullbasket and @Muchmirth .... thank you for the comments which are very much appreciated. I also welcome the confirmation of the natural metal finish of the radiators ... that's really helpful Little bits done today, but not worthy of a full update ... and realised I've missed some parts that should have been added by now ... Happy Modelling! Keith ☺️ 3
Keeff Posted July 9 Author Posted July 9 (edited) Greetings everyone! So, time has been spent in the tank factory so here's Update 13: Rear mudguards, tool box mount added and primed/sprayed: And at the opposite end, the front plate and mudguards have been added. The front plate took some 'adjustment' and 'persuasion' to fit properly due to the hull problem that was highlighted previously. That and the use of car primer which is thicker didn't help, but here's the result: Wheels - as per the information from Tiger1.info, the outer and first set of inner wheels were bolted, and not held with nuts over a threaded part as per the kit. Here's one of the outer wheels: Some time with the dremel tool and careful sanding has resulted in bolts rather than nuts: The wheels need the brown and green camo adding before some detail and weathering is applied. Next up, some of the parts for the rear panel got a top coat, some with different thickness to others for effect: And, as a treat (and to make sure this has the correct exhaust tops) I ordered some 3d printed tool clamps and exhausts from AFV Modeller and cable clamps from Scale Modelshop, which are rather good: It appears that a lot of kits provide exhaust tops with the non-return flap closed, which is incorrect as they were only closed when wading. The normal running position should be open as per the replacement parts. Still lots to do and many corrections to make, but progress is being made As always, comments, advice and a large coffee are welcome! Keith ☺️ Edited July 9 by Keeff 5 2 1
Muchmirth Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Those 3d parts looks to be very good, nice and sharpe, will add some nice detail. 👍 1
