Dermo245 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 (edited) Hi all, I've never built a Starfighter but couldn't resist this one at last year's IPMS Scotland show for less than a tenner. Hasegawa_F-104_box Contents Hasegawa_F-104_contents No idea on finish just yet, still have 3 other builds on the bench! Good luck with your builds and happy modelling. Marklo Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Welcome Dermot. The kit scheme looks pretty nice to me. 1
Dermo245 Posted February 26 Author Posted February 26 Thanks all and quick update - going to attempt my best to backdate this to an NF-104. Lockheed NF-104A Cheers, Dermot 1 1
Planebuilder62 Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Hi Dermott Here is a link to one I made earlier, hope it helps. Regards Toby 3

Dermo245 Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 @Planebuilder62 quick question? Were the wing tip extensions just on the main wings or also on the tail surfaces? Cheers! Dermot
Planebuilder62 Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Hi Dermot No extensions to the tailplane, only the wings. Regards Toby 1
Dermo245 Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 So a bit done on this one - started off by extending the intake spikes with some surgery and adding a suitable piece of round styrene. Modded one on top, unmodified kit part on the bottom. Hasegawa_F-104_build_3 Then glued in place on the fuselage and the gaps filled with sprue goo Hasegawa_F-104_build_2 The kit instructions would have you join the rear fuselage halves and then join it to he two nose halves...but I glue each part separately to help with lineup. I've also made a start on the tail mod to accept the rocket engine. Hasegawa_F-104_build_4 The rocket engine is made from a donated F-104 wingtip tank and widened with plastic strip. Hasegawa_F-104_build_6 And made a start on the wingtip extensions, also from plastic card. Hasegawa_F-104_build_5 Shout out to @Planebuilder62 for sending me a copy of scale plans for this one, otherwise wouldn't have been possible. Thanks for looking and more later! Cheers, Dermot 8 1
Dermo245 Posted May 19 Author Posted May 19 Buttoned up and ready for some primer shortly! Hasegawa_NF-104_build_8 Cheers, Dermot 9
Planebuilder62 Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Hi @Dermo245 Did you know that the fuel lines to the rocket engine can be made from 1/4 round plastic strip glued along the bottom of the fin on each side. They join just infront of the fin after splitting out from the spine. Hope that helps. Regards Toby 2
Planebuilder62 Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Dear @Dermo245 If you take a look at @zebra’s 1/48 GB thread you will see the fairings at the bottom of the fin that are part of the Hypersonic conversion. You can also see the small rocket nozzles around the nose cone. Regards Toby. 1 1
Dermo245 Posted May 30 Author Posted May 30 Thanks for the extension on this GB lads. Added the rocket engine and fuel lines from 1/4 round strip and then hit with primer. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_9 Mostly happy with that given the small size. Cheers, Dermot 4 1
Dermo245 Posted June 3 Author Posted June 3 And we're on to paint. I didn't have any gloss black so semi-gloss applied. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_10 Then sprayed with Mr Hobby Super Metallic Fine Silver. Left it overnight and masked the wings which are white on top and grey underneath. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_11 Mostly happy with that! Have also done some detail painting around the cockpit by hand. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_12 Thanks for looking. All the best, Dermot 5 1
Dermo245 Posted June 15 Author Posted June 15 So last bits with this one. Masked up and painted nose panel Hasegawa_NF-104_build_13 Then the decals by Caracal which were absolutely excellent Hasegawa_NF-104_build_14 Hasegawa_NF-104_build_15 Finished the seat with some tape and wire details. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_16 Added the gear, doors and wheels. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_17 And with the canopy added and a nose pitot from a sewing needle, she's done. Hasegawa_NF-104_build_19 Will post some more pics in the Gallery, thanks to @Marklo and @reini for hosting and to @Planebuilder62 for the scale drawings and advice. Cheers, Dermot 3 1 2
hakkikt Posted June 16 Posted June 16 A truly inspiring build - you have given me not just an excuse but a reason to get another G Starfighter. 1
