Amahas Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Hello Dear Modellers! I buid BAC TSR-2. I will use resin aftermarket by SMK, Quickboost, Armory in my work, decals by Hobby Decals. I plan to completely recut the jointing. I want to get the correct geometry. 10
kev67 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Looking forward to its progression, all the extras must of cost a small fortune
Mike Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Firstly, aboard A good choice of subject, but I'm interested in what you plan to undertake based on the following two sentences: 1 hour ago, Amahas said: I plan to completely recut the jointing. I want to get the correct geometry. I know the kit has some shape issues, particularly the over-rotund fuselage behind the nose, but I'd like to hear about the details I've still got a couple of Dynavector kits due to the issues with the Airfix kit, so I'm very interested 1
scautomoton Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Oooh, following. You have all the aftermarket I see. Should build up into something spectacular. Are you building one of the real jets or doing an in-service scheme?
psdavidson Posted February 18 Posted February 18 What an interesting first post Welcome to the forum I have popcorn at the ready
Technik1.wills Posted February 18 Posted February 18 This is quite an old kit; I started one in 2015. My suggestions for "aftermarket" part options are: 1. Be very selective - particularly with canopies and other transparent parts; for instance, I found that the CMK replacement canopy for the pilot's cockpit windshield is incorrect - having been to the RAF Cosford Museum and seen the aircraft "close-up", I can say that the front central panel is rectangular, as per the Airfix part, not trapezoidal (inward-sloping side rails) as on the CMK replacement vac-form moulding. 2. I strongly advise against replacing the original undercarriage (Landing Gear) moulded-plastic legs with any of the various "white metal" aftermarket options; the "white metal" used for such parts is very weak and the mouldings need considerable and very careful cleaning-up, using strong magnification and bright lighting. The quality of the metal alloys (mostly lead-based [Pb] used by the different manufacturers varies a great deal. My research on the topic of "white metal" proved that there is no standard for model parts! (The only other industry which uses "white metal" is the vehicle-engine makers, who only use it (if at all now) for engine bearings, such as on crankshafts and connecting-rod big ends, where there is a continuous, high-pressure lubrication!) I have tried using some of these parts, only to need to drill through them and insert steel rods and pins tor the wheels and main legs. 3. Many of the aftermarket parts are extremely fragile and easily damaged, even when removing them from the moulding blocks. While they do provide extra, fine detail, much of this detail will be difficult to see (wheel wells or electronics and weapons bays), so the added visual "value" of these is questionable. Having said all this, I enjoyed building the kit (over a considerable period), but do please take your time and think carefully about each step. There is plenty of additional advice and information available online. Also, a visit to either RAF Museum, Cosford or the Imperial War Museum, Duxford will be very well worth the time and money, both for your TSR-2 model and for future model builds. Enjoy! 1
anders1970 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Great plane, how old is the kit? Always gets a visit when I'm at Cosford
Amahas Posted February 19 Author Posted February 19 6 hours ago, Technik1.wills said: This is very cool! I want to see your model! Share a photo?

general melchett Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Good luck Amahas, it's a good base to work from. Lots of work ahead, particularly the forward fuselage and intakes but look at all the reference material now available and you'll be fine. There's new info turning up all the time. Look forward to progress.... I've got another one of the original kits lurking in the stash somewhere with requisite aftermarket but not sure if I want to go through all that work again! Thank you for replying so soon, and welcome to the forum. 🙂I am still finishing my 1/48 Airfix TSR-2, and am now putting the decals on the completed (a very long story!) kit, after almost 10 years of building. (Admins, is there any “punishment” or award [medal, etc.] for such a long-term build?) Once I have completed this stage, (which will be very soon!) I will post some photos for you… 1

Thanks Robert...cheque's in the post. Hello General Melchett, Sir, I must admit, I understand your reluctance to repeat the experience. It is a lot of work, and the time needed on research was extensive. I am not intending to repeat the experience either; firstly, I may not have enough life-span remaining, and secondly, the build was demanding, if not traumatic - and I have no great desire to be “certified” under the Mental Health Act, let alone detained! I salute you. I am, sir, sincerely… 1 1

general melchett Posted February 20 Posted February 20 (edited) Hi anders, no problem. I finished mine as a what-if operational aircraft of 3 squadron circa 1970, fitted with the long-range ferry tank, a pair of Blue Water tactical nuclear missiles and a brace of Martel anti-radiation weapons. general melchett Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Thanks Amos, appreciated. It hasn’t been out of it’s box for the best part of fifteen years, better check it hasn’t turned to the styrene equivalent of dust… 1

Surely Melchett Towers has an entire wing dedicated to display cases showcasing every build The General has ever made! Which reminds me, I must buy another glass shelf..... 1
general melchett Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Quote In a box? Surely Melchett Towers has an entire wing dedicated to display cases showcasing every build The General has ever made! When I say box I mean a hermatically sealed sarcophogus interred deep within the catacombs beneath MT, along with all the others that venture out to various shows now and then. Lady M strictly forbids any of these being displayed in any display cabinets around the halls of MT as these are reserved for far more important works of art picked up at local boot fairs and charity shops...remember, happy wife, happy life. Anyway, back to amahas wonderful build. A lot of that aftermarket wasn't available when I built mine...hmmm, tempting! 1
Dean1700 Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Great to see another one on the bench. I got this kit a couple of years ago and haven't started it yet but love seeing all the past builds. Following this one now. 1

And what do you think are the absolute must have upgrades and would that be because of poor detailing or inaccuracies? Are you also correcting the angle of the landing gear?
Whitewolf Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) Got one of these stashed away with all the CMK/Eduard detail sets. The Pavla seats are better than the CMK seats in terms of detail if you can get them. I got some from the aviation megastore. Edited February 25 by Whitewolf 1

Сиденья Pavla лучше, чем сиденья CMK с точки зрения детализации, если вы сможете их достать. Я купил несколько в авиационном мегасторе. I plan to make the cocpit and undercarriage bays myself. I didn't like the resin parts, they were blurry. I enjoy scratchbuilding.
